The ref should have blown the whistle at :05, not at :02.

Then they shouldn't have given Washington enough time to figure out a play.

Awful job by the refs.

And then Washington's center should have snapped the ball right away. What a dolt, does he not know there are :02 left and the clock will start running right away?

Nobody on Washington knew that the clock was going to start. They had about 20 seconds to get ready for the snap, and yet the entire offensive line was still standing when the official signaled for the clock to start. Talk about stupid.

Even worse than having about 15 seconds after a first down to get a play (which they should already have had considering that they were just one snap removed from a timeout), yet the spiked the ball near midfield.

Without a doubt. But the ref seemed to be right by the Washington line for the longest time, then suddenly wound up the clock and started the game. That was strange. Also it was strange that they needed 30-45 seconds to start the play. And of course, that they got rid of 3 seconds.

On Washington's end, I agree the spike was stupid (but Stanback isn't exactly the smartest QB in the world) and the center has to just be ready to hike it right away no matter what the refs or USC is trying to do.

UCLA beat Arizona 27-7 in a game which saw both starting quarterbacks knocked out in the first half. Ben Olson was hit on a late hit (which the refs didn't even call) and sprained his knee. Which, of course, means that once the MRI comes back, he'll be out for the year with a tear. :(

Patrick Cowan did a great job coming in as a backup (201 yards, 2 TDs). He'll probably get his first start of his career at Eugene next week, not the place you want to go to start your career. :? At least he'll have one of the best defenses in the country to help him.

Great victory for Cal, disappointing game for Oregon. Both Cal and Oregon have a good chance to come in to the Coliseum and beat USC. And folks, Washington is a good team - there should have been more made over USC barely beating WSU in Pullman than barely beating Washington.

Impressive 47-17 win by Iowa over Purdue without two starters on each side of the ball. Purdue's defense is terrible and we got 539 total yards of offense. Tate was very good (17-23 for 253, 2 TD's and 0 INT's) but as a team we ran it 40 times for 286 yards.

The way we controlled their offense was very encouraging. We held Painter under 50%, forced him into 2 picks and no big plays.

Oh and who decided it was a good idea to make Dan Fouts a play-by-play guy? He is absolutely brutal in that role.

Here's the 3 big questions about the polls now:

1) How far should Auburn drop? Behind Texas? Behind ND? Behind TN?

2) How far should the 9/10/11 teams drop (LSU/Oregon/Georgia)?

3) Do you revamp the top 5? Here are the candidates (after OSU)-USC, WV, Florida, Michigan, Louisville-how do you rank them, and does a 1 loss Texas team deserve to be ahead of any of them?

1. Auburn may drop behind ND considering ND will be passing three teams up in the polls. Definitely behind Texas and Tennessee.

2. LSU drops to about 14 or 15, Oregon drops to 17-19, Georgia drops to 15 or 16.

3. My top 5: 1. OSU 2. Florida 3. Michigan 4. USC 5. WV

West Virginia is going to end up playing for the National Championship without playing anyone. I am including Louisville in there BTW.

It's a shame

The Louisville-WVU game is going to be good. And I think Louisville is a solid team and should be considered 'someone'.

Am I the only person that thinks Louisville is better than West VA, and actually really good.

I mean besides Cuse.

And I have a hard time seeing Arkansas as 17th in the nation when they played like a I-AA team against USC, who all of a sudden can't beat terrible teams by more than 4 points.

In fairness they still didn't have their QB situation figured out (their original starter threw 2 big picks), and their stud RB was still not healthy in a game that was very close for a half.

They hadn't lost since then and just went into the #2 team's stadium and blew them out.
