Eight years of "Oh no!! Noo!!"

Meant to post this yesterday, the eight-year anniversary of the infamous Brant Brown play (it must be the masochist in me that wants to commemorate the day, but Cubs fan = masochist by definition)

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/baseball/mlb/news/1998/09/23/cubs_brewers/cubs.html

You can hear someone in that clip (Steve Stone?) mistakenly say "tie game" - then correct himself a second later.

This audio clip of Santo is very short:

We've all had too many "Oh no!! Noo!!" moments since that day

I remember that...

I had my 2nd knee surgery of the year the day before. The game before I remember the Cubs won, but I don't remember anything about it because I was pretty doped up.

However, I watched the game that day. I had the volume on the TV down and the radio on. I honestly felt bad for Brant Brown, as he would have gone down in Cubs lore as the one who cost us a playoff spot had we not made it that year. I felt even worse for Santo.

I really thought that was it for that year, as there was no chance we'd do anything afterwards, much like the feeling that Game 6 left.

Pat and ron were talking about that call last night. Pat said ron collapsed and it appeared he "might have expired"

At least I'm pretty much over it because we won the world series a couple years later

Say what?

I'm posting from an alternate reality where it doesn't suck to be a cubs fan and bad memories are softened by occasional successes. Or possibly denial.

And in that alternate reality Ron is hopefully in the Hall of Fame. :D

Hey, how are the Bears doing in that alternate reality?

Beck's mullett was awesome.

Shooter had one of the all-time great mullets. One of these days we need to assemble an all-star-all-mullet team on NSBB (or maybe it's already been done?)

pitchers, Big Unit, Rod Beck, Dennis Eckersley ...

position players: John Kruk (and pretty much all the Phillies teams of the early '90s), Mike Piazza, Vinny Castilla, Mark McGwire ...

Back on topic, I'll never forget that wild run in '98, up to the last day when some Rockie I barely heard of named Neifi Perez put the Cubs into tie for the WC. Neifi saved Brant Brown from an even worse fate than being remembered only for that play.

They lose every few years to keep the excitement going.

If the Cubs lost out on a playoff spot I think Brown would have been villified the way Don Young was in 1969.

It would have been horrible - but as I remember, Brant Brown was a BIG reason why we were in it that year. Didn't he have like several late inning HR's that year to win games? And he was young - what ever happened to him? It is like he was traded and then fell off the face of the earth.

On December 14, 1998, Brown was sent by the Cubs to the Pirates for pitcher Jon Lieber.

On December 13, 1999, Brown was sent by the Pirates to the Marlins for outfielder Bruce Aven.

On June 9, 2000, Brown was sent to the Rangers from the Marlins for Chuck Smith. On that same day, he was sent to the Cubs from the Rangers for Dave Martinez.

He was the Alex Gonzalez of his day.

And, for some reason, Mike Schmidt isn't! :D
