Apparently, there's a rumor going around per the Sun-Times that Charlie Weis said that "we will never lose again to Michigan State on my watch" at an alumni function this summer. John L. Smith has said he heard about it but Weis isn't talking.

If he did, why make such a claim? I would think a coach in his position should be above the usual car salesman pep talks to alumni and boosters.

Charlie really isn't as much of a Belicheck guy as some people think or expect in many ways.

If a team planted their flag on my field after they beat me in overtime, I would probably still have a lingering distaste in my mouth. I can see why Wies made a comment like this to a Alumni group. Probably not the smartest thing to say but he probably didnt expect it to come back and bite him since it was an alumni group.

MSU/ND is turning into a good rivalry. I just hope that MSU can play good enough in the next few years to keep this a good rivalry. I suspect that they are going to have a hard time keeping up in a couple of years

FTR, the flag was planted because ND didn't even bring the megaphone trophy to the stadium, since they weren't planning on giving it up(Weis also supposedly guaranteed a win before the game). That may not change what people think of it, but it's the rationale that was used.

I, for one, thought it was hilarious when they just planted that flag midfield.

Interestingly, Holtz made the guarantee when he arrived at ND that they'd never lose to a military academy on his watch. (The claim was mostly made thanks to Gerry Faust's 1-4 record against Air Force.) He almost made good on the guarantee, until the Irish lost to Air Force in overtime in his final season.

Notre Dame will win and cover the spread at Michigan State. I haven't been this certain about a game in some time.

At minus three, I REALLY like those odds.

TT, Alex Knipp intercepted Curtis Painter in the Purdue game last week for his second pick of the year. Just read that in today's school paper.

MINUS 3??

That's [expletive] insane.

I don't know how much it matters. When you get to a line that small, it's pretty much a pick'em line. Yeah, Notre Dame is favored, but only by a field goal. I think they'll have no problem winning by more than that.

For the record it was MSU's coach who said that Weis said that to alumni. It never happened. On NDNation there was a big thing about it, and all the alumni said there was only one meeting this summer (Westwood One) and that was never mentioned.

I think it is being confused with what Holtz said...I paraphrase "MSU planted the flag in our stadium my first year...I made sure they never did that again by beating them 10 times in a row" Good ole Holtz didn't even beat them 10 times in a row. I think it was only 8.

Never heard that before. Is that why they did the same thing Holtz's first year?

I dunno, that was before my time. Also, some Spartan fans would bet their lives that ND flag planted during one of the last two wins in East Lansing(I don't remember which one), but no pictures of it have been found, just accounts from people at the game.

Yea I have heard that ND did too. However there is no proof of it, and you would think that there would be. That is not something that is easily missed by cameras. I really think that is just MSU trying to make excuses for why that acted so classless last year.

I really hope ND doesn't do that this Saturday after they win. :D

NDNation's weekly predictor has picked MSU to win...that's the first time since I began reading the site last fall that he's picked an Irish loss to my recollection.

Just a motivational tool, that's all that is.

How is ND giving them 3 'pretty much a pick'em'?

I am not sure how much you bet on football, but 3 points in anything but a pick'em.

Be careful. I read some bold ND predictions last week as well.

If Michigan State's offense plays a full four quarters, they'll win a high-scoring afair. I don't think they can afford another slow start, though.

But not from me...I don't think. But you are right. I normally assume they will lose anyway, because that is what I have grown to know (much like the Cubs). I just have a feeling they will beat MSU this week.

That's why it's insane. Notre Dame straight up against MSU?

Not just that, but they're a +105 on sportsbook meaning my 25 dollar bet nets me 26.25 if they win by more than three. Are that many people really picking MSU with only three points!?

Georgia Tech is ripping Virginia a new one, 24-0 four minutes into the 2nd half. Granted UVA is coming off a loss to Western Michigan, but I really think the Jackets are going to win the ACC.
