This taken from an ESPN.com article on the Orioles:

Nestor Aparicio, who owns WNST Radio in Baltimore, is organizing a "Take Back the Birds" protest for the 4:05 p.m. game with Detroit on Sept. 21. Aparicio and his fellow diehards plan to assemble at an Inner Harbor restaurant dressed in black (no orange) and march to the park in unison. They'll take their seats in the upper deck, shout "O" during the national anthem, and cheer their lungs out for the local team.

And then, at precisely 5:08 p.m. (the "5" in honor of Brooks Robinson and the "8" for Cal Ripken Jr.), they will leave the park en masse to protest what's become of the team under Angelos' ownership.

I guess I should reserve judgement until I find out how many people are involved in this protest, but its good to see a disgruntled fan base can put together a decent protest. Every protest I've heard about for the Cubs has been given little to no support by Cubs fans.

Didn't the Detroit Lions tried something similar last football season? So, unless something happens during the "protest", I doubt it will make much news.

thats lame...esp to shout during the anthem.....i think thats pretty

class-less

That has nothing to do with the protest, it's an Oriole fan tradition to emphasize the O in the anthem.

The Orioles should blow up their team, start from scratch, and trade us Miggy Tejada and Nick Markakis this offseason. I will send them Ron Ce, Jock, Mary Prior and Dempster. Surely, they'll take that offer. :-)

Seriously, I wonder how we could get those two guys, would plug two holes in a major way.

That's right. It's just like going to Illinois hockey games and saying "Chief" every time the ref made the signal for icing.

No Brian Roberts or Bedard in that deal?

This hasn't happened yet right? I'm not sure why it would be assumed this would have any more of a turnout than that silly Cubs.com protest that happened earlier this year that no one showed up at.

And its still lame.

WNST has done these things before. They usually reserve buyout the tickets in the part of the park farthest from the action (upper deck, right field line). They usually get 50-100 poor people/college kids to show up.

I just don't get the point of fan protests. I enjoy baseball too much to get up and walk out of game. I doubt any of these protests mean as much as a half-empty stadium or lower ratings or fan apathy.

While I'll always be a Cubs' fan, I have reached the point of fan apathy. I've watched a whole lot fewer games than usual and even stopped TiVoing the ones I couldn't see very early this summer.

Agreed. What is amusing in this situation is that it's a fan protest that involves giving the team money by buying tickets.

Well looks like this protest got some national media pub, more then any protest that Cubs fans have had.

Nearly a thousand disgruntled Orioles fans walked out of Baltimore's game against Detroit en masse on Thursday, culminating a demonstration aimed at team owner Peter Angelos.

A majority of the protesters wore black T-shirts that read "FREE THE BIRDS," and many carried signs that had "For Pete's Sake" on one side and "Free the Birds" on the other.

"Whoever joins that protest has no comprehension of what it costs to run a baseball team," Angelos said in a telephone interview from his law office in Baltimore. "When you get down to facts, putting together a team that can compete in the AL East means having a payroll between $100-$110 million.

The Twins and A's are both going to the playoffs this year. Try another lame excuse.

I think he's referring to the two 120+ million juggernauts in his own division. They spend far more then any team in the AL Central and West. The White Sox are the next closest I think and their payroll is like 30 million less then the Red Sox

The Cubs will be sitting at home with their $95+ million payroll this October with the worst record in the NL. Try again Petey.

That's fine, but either the Twins or Tigers are going to the playoffs with a modest payroll - as the wild card, which is something Angelos' team could win without having to beat both the Yankees and the Red Sox.

Should have found some way to get that Tejada + for Prior trade
