Someone wanna tell me that you still have faith in Demspter?

Lets convert an average starter instead of getting a real closer.

Most real closers were average starters, or worse.

There's nothing wrong with converting a guy like Dempster to closer. The problem is giving him a 3 year contract.

With a no-trade clause no less.

I'd still value Dempster as a closer, although I'd be open to trading him if we got something good in return.

Closers are hardly ever 100%, blown saves are gonna happen. Last year was a fluke in that Dempster only blew two saves, and then we won both games anyway.

Sorry to soil the mood of the lynch mob.

I think he had 12 straight saves before his last stretch of inactivity?

I wouldn't give up on Dempster until he has a chance to show what he can do under a real manager that knows how to handle a bullpen. However, I do think it is imperative for the Cubs to have a legitimate Plan B in case he struggles again next year (Wood, perhaps).

Has anyone really taken the time to do a good lie down on how his performance varies with usage? Without taking alot of time to look real deep, it seems he started out the year pretty good, didn't get used for awhile, then stunk for a spell. He came out of it, had another decent streak, didn't get used for a while again, and now he's stinking again. I don't know if there's any correlation, maybe I'm reaching for straws. I just can't believe he's this bad. There has to be something else going on with him.

I blame Dusty for not seeing the obvious. Dempster was really laboring after 40 pitches and should have been taken out. I don't really care about any individual's ego, in a close game you should have a pitcher warmed up in case your closer gets in trouble. Dempster has been shakey for the last few appearances and Dusty couldn't predict what was going to happen. I saw it coming a mile away.

And this is yet another great example of why you never, ever, never give big money and guaranteed years to ANY reliever after one good year.

Did I mention ever?

Dude's got a closer's makeup. There weren't any good closers on the market. Closing is more about mentality than stuff. Blah Blabblahbabab

Dempster 2006 Career
ERA 4.45 4.79
WHIP 1.52 1.55
BAA .260 .268
K/9 7.75 7.41
K/BB 1.69 1.57

That's not entirely fair at all and you know it. Dempster wasn't a closer his whole career.

but he's been a pitcher his whole career. and not a very good one. i don't know why people expect some miraculous turnaround out of a guy becaues he's now pitching one inning instead of five. it's still the same pitcher.

ahh...the Mel Rojas rule.

or the latroy hawkins rule, the mike remlinger rule, the bob howry rule, etc. relievers are too fickle to be dumping huge contracts on.
