Is there any chance that Larry Rothschild is doing anything wrong? So many Cubs pitchers have hit the DL this year and unless it's the usual Cubs' luck, is something wrong happening with Rothschild's training? I have the utmost respect for Rothschild -- he's a great guy and we share last names.

-- Jacob R., Berlin, Germany

There are two possibilities: someone has a voodoo doll and is poking pins in the oblique and bicep and elbow, or, stuff happens. Ryan O'Malley has never been injured in his athletic career, going back to his high school days as a wide receiver on a football team. Then he comes up with a strained elbow in his second big-league start. You can't blame anyone for that. Prior hurt his oblique during batting practice. That's not pitching related. The pitchers like Rothschild. If he was doing anything wrong, they'd say so.

Pathetic, again. This woman is a terrible excuse for a journalist, writer, or whatever she's calling herself.

The only two possibilities are black magic or bad luck? There's no way that somebody is doing something wrong? Prior has arm issues, but she only focuses on the oblique? The only way you can tell a coach is doing something wrong is if the players say so.

This woman is maddeningly dim. As an insider with the team (writing for the team as opposed to an entity charged with covering the team objectively) we can't expect much, but seriously, what's the point of even having these things.

I didn't realize that the non-casual fans even read her columns. She's nothing but a PR piece for the Cubs. Absolutely nothing can be gained by reading her column. Or mailbag, whatever she calls it.

And she is one ugly woman.

She also focused on O'Malley, who is probably the last guy anyone was thinking about when they've wondered if Rothschild is doing something wrong.

You're a Cub fan, aren't you? Kinda comes with the territory. :D

That site used to be my sole provider of Cub information. Much like the Tiger official site was my source. When the internet was first widely available I thought places like those were awesome, especially when I live so far from either one.

But, now, sites like this one and access to local newspapers make the Cub official site far less appealing.

They should try to remedy that by offering more than fluff, in my opinion.

Part of the reason behind that is the old Cubs' site was much better then the "mlb cookie cutter" sites that exist now. The old site had the cool replica of the Wrigley scoreboard and a link to audio (which is verbotten these days) of the games. Most importantly, they had a "press room" section to all of the articles about the Cubs in the THREE major papers, adding the Daily Herald to the Trib and Mariotti Rag.

They may have had to leave some of those features behind because those other portals wanted people to come through their own site. I don't know. But, it seems they could make a better effort to stray from the template the MLB has, as you point out.

She's nothing but a talking head for the Cubs organization. When she isn't writing this propaganda crap, she's mixing Hendry another Jack and Coke.

I have to admit, I do read her column just for kicks. I am a glutton for punishment, I'm watching this team get swept by the Pirates.

Regardless of how pointless her stuff is, I do think it's possible to gauge the thoughts of the "typical fan" through what she writes. Many people out there share the thought that Cubs management really isn't doing anything wrong, they've just been hampered by:

The Tribune being too cheap.

Bad luck.

Players just not doing their jobs.

And many of them think that:

Pierre and Jones are just dandy players who really help the team.

Ramirez is replacable since he doesn't hustle.

Bynum, Neifi etc are great role players.

The team needs to find more clutch players who try harder and care more and know what it means to be a Cub, etc.

The real problem is just too many rookies on the team.

Those fans who have a great interest in the objective analysis of baseball and what the stats are telling us about the Cubs are still a minority. The bulk of thought out there is still very much of the conventional type, and there really isn't too much of an incentive for Hendry to change his ways with most fans supporting him.

You notice a lot of "I know Jim Hendry is great, but what will it take to get him to improve the defense?" "Obviously Pierre is first class, how much do you think the Cubs should offer him this offseason?"

Really Carrie? The guy has had no injuries in his athletic career, then gets an arm injury in his second big-league start with the Cubs and you don't think anyone should be blamed? I'm not saying that it is Rothchild's fault but you have to at least consider the possibility that Cubs coaching staff isn't doing something correctly with these pitchers.

why can't serena or one of the gals from NSBB get this gig?

I wonder how someone like Muskat Love gets the job?

lol! I'd rather read Darren Baker's input on the Cubs than hers. Pathetic excuse for a "journalist."
