Veal has a one vote lead and I haven't voted yet.

I can be swayed ($$$).

pfft. I hold the keys to the database and there's around 3000 additional votes that can be (manually) input!

(yes, I'm just kidding around for anyone who can't already tell)

I just broke the Gallagher-Veal tie :)

IMO, definitely one of them deserves it. I chose Gallagher because he's having great success, such as Veal, but he's doing it at a higher level.

one more for veal, come on fools.

Out of curiosity, while Veal over Gallagher? They have strikingly similar numbers, but Gallagher is younger at a higher level...

I voted Veal. Would have gone Gallagher, especially with him being at a higher level, but the enormous spike in his walk rate gives me concern. Veal may walk batters at a near identical rate and at a lower level, but he's been consistent, and even improving in that regard. Sean, not so much--and Veal makes up for his walk rates with an absurdly low hit rate, while Gallagher's WHIP in AAA is currently 1.47, which is not good. Love them both, though.

Pie is performing admirably for his age and level, but Veal and Gallagher have been dominant, while Pie has just been good. This isn't a top prospect award, or I'd probably have given it to Pie as well.

IN DAYTONA:

VEAL: 69 IP, 36 BB

GALL: 78 IP, 21 BB

At an equal level this year, Gallagher had better control. Veal's walks could spike at West Tenn too...we just don't know.

(BTW, their Peoria walk totals: VEAL: 73 IP, 40 BB; GALL: 146 IP, 55 BB)

Plus, Veal is LEFT-HANDED! :P

haha....BUT, Gallagher arguably deserved it last year as well. He was my vote last year b/c of his scoreless streak and his age. He can't be robbed two years in a row!

Yes, I know this, and it wasn't the point. Any way you slice it, a WHIP approaching 1.5 is not good. That's what Gallagher's doing in WT. He's got dominant overall numbers, but he's mostly doing passably at AA (which is no small feat, don't get me wrong) after dominating at high A. Veal has been dominating consistently all season long. Opponents hit .180 against Veal; they hit .248 againt Gallagher. With the walk rates being near identical, I'll take the guy who gets more people out, especially when the other guy is going the wrong way on walk rate.

Yes, Veal's walks could spike at WT. There is a concern for that. What does that have to do with who wins the 2006 minor league player of the year award?

Exactly why I voted for Veal.

Sean's control was a major plus over Veal's. Veal's ability to miss bats and give up few hits was his major plus over Gallagher. Once they were promoted, Veal kept his advantage in missing bats and giving up fewer hits, but Sean's control deteriorated.

But if Gallagher had stayed at Daytona, he too would have dominated in the same fashion that Veal has. In fact, by walks/strikeouts, Gallagher was more dominant at Daytona than Veal was.

How impressive is it that Veal is dominating competition that is beneath him? Is it as impressive as what Gallagher is doing in West Tenn?

The fact that Gallagher's overall numbers (ERA, k's/9, bb's/9, etc etc) are very simliar to Veal's, while pitching at higher levels that Veal --at a younger age no less--tips the award to Sean.

I voted for Gallagher because he keeps getting it done at each level. Being the 3rd youngest in the southern league and still racking up over a strikeout per inning -- day-um! Plus it looks like he's finishing strong. I like Veal alot and its not a knock on him I just think Gallagher's done it at a higher level and younger age.

Nobody thought he could do it either. First and secondround picks are supposed to be ready to go which is why I've been disappointed by Pawelek. Was he hurt or something? He should be at peoria now at least.

How is Donnie dominating competition that is *beneath* him? He's - at age 21 - pitching in the FSL with about 1 year experience at a community college. Sure, Gallagher was more dominant than Veal in BB/K (but not at, say, ERA), but Veal has been more dominant after his promtion than Gallagher has been after his promotion.

For those comparing Gallagher and Veal in terms of where they were drafted - don't forget Gallagher was expected to be taken as high as the 3rd round but fell. (Because of signability concerns? UK or someone else can correct me on that one.)

Joe_Cub, Pawelek reported to Mesa this spring out of shape and struggled in the spring. That's why he was sent to Boise and not Peoria. I hope he learned his lesson.

You should stand for it. Fox has had a much better year.

How do you figure that?

Fox .276/.312/.454 (AA)

Pie .282/.340/.445 (AAA)

And that's ignoring age, level and ceiling.

Fox's aggregate stats for the year between A and AA:

.299/.356/.527

I just can't ignore level and age when I vote.

Do you ever do voting on who's the top prospect overall award?

There's usually discussion about it in the minor league forum.

I have a hard time separating the two.
