Since my tivo didn't record the match, what were the thoughts on Charlie Davies?

Prefaced by the thought that he should be a supersub-coming in at minute 65 and running at tired mids and backs...he played well. His decision making in the attacking third is still suspect-he misplayed a couple of balls that could have led to scoring chances-but his hustle and effort created the first goal and his workrate was probably what this team needed.

is italy playing that bad right now that egypt can play so well against them but then look so bad against the us today? i'm not hoping for much against spain but its another great team we get to play in a short amount of time. hopefully the us can build on the victory and look a little more focused and determined going forward, especially in the wc2010 qualifiers.

It sure appears Italy is playing horribly. They were smashed by Brazil and lost to Egypt. Like USSoccer said, I think we could have competed with them had Clark not been red carded with 55 minutes to go. The play in the entire first half - even in the 10-15 minutes after Clark was sent off - was pretty even. With the way we were playing, I wouldn't have been surprised if an even strength U.S. team pulls a tie out of that one.

Brazil smashed us, but they smashed Italy as well and were clearly the class of the group. Italy should have been right there but they look bad right now, and a bad Italy is apparently on par with the U.S. and Egypt. They seemed to only play well for 45 minutes and that was against a 10-man U.S. team.

hahaha, awesome headline from Ives.

"Confederations Cup: 23 Americans advance, one goes home"

That's the greatest headline I have seen all year.

Ives may annoy me, but his scoops are fantastic.

http://www.soccerbyives.net/soccer_by_ives/2009/06/espn-strikes-deal-for-la-liga-rights.html

If you are an American fan of the Spanish First Division (and who isn't?) then you will be able to see many more La Liga games starting next season after ESPN struck a deal with GolTV to partner in multimedia broadcast coverage of the league that boasts world powers FC Barcelona and Real Madrid.

The new deal will allow ESPN to show La Liga matches on ESPN, ESPN Deportes as well as ESPN360.com. More than 95 matches will be shown on Deportes, with at least 114 matches set to be streamed on ESPN360.com. ESPN2 will televise select matches ('Super Clasico anybody?) while ESPN Mobile TV will also air matches. GolTV will continue to air its 120 La Liga matches throughout the year.

Oh man this is fantastic. I love La Liga and I love ESPN HD. Also, if this means Phil Schoen could be affiliated with ESPN and maybe someday replace Dellacamara, I'd be psyched. Also, they should can Tommy Smyth's [expletive] ass and replace him with Ray Hudson.

http://www.soccerbyives.net/soccer_by_ives/2009/06/report-onyewu-to-fenerbahce.html

Oguchi Onyewu went into this summer a free agent and hoped to put together a strong Confederations Cup performance to draw some potential suitors for his services. It appears he has found a taker, though not one from the leagues we might have expected him to go to.

According to Sky Sports, Onyewu has signed a three-year deal with Turkish club Fenerbahce, choosing to pass on the possibility of signing with Birmingham City after talks stalled with the English club.

Fenerbahce finished in fourth place in the Turkish League last season, qualifying for the Europa League in the process. The Turkish club has been known for its free-spending ways, having landed the likes of Dani Guiza, Robert Carlos and Stephen Appiah in recent years. The club boasts several of the top players from Turkey's impressive Euro 2008 run, including Semih Senturk, Kazim Kazim and Volkan Demiral.

The club, coached by recently-hired German Christoph Daum, has been very active in this summer's transfer market as it attempts to return to the heights it reached when it made an improbable run to the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals just two years ago. Last season was a disappointing one that saw Fenerbahce finish fourth in Turkey and winless in the Champions League group stage.

This is out of nowhere. All due respect to Fener, who are a great European side, I'm disappointed. I wanted Gooch to get into that EPL, day-in-and-day-out grind.

So he passes up the chance to play in the Champions league group stages with Standard Liège (automatic qualification) to play in the effin' Europa league and that nuthouse in Istanbul?

Hope the money makes it worth his while.

Isn't there a decent amount of racism in Turkey too?

I'm thinking he has to be getting a fat contract.

Hell yeah, ESPN!

http://unprofessionalfoul.com/2009/06/uf-quick-throw-breaking-news.html

According to the Associated Press, ESPN have just won the rights to broadcast Setanta's 46 Premier League games in the UK next season. How will this affect ESPN's attempts to crack the footy market in the USA? Nobody knows but this is a first step into the world of the Premier League for ESPN. Setanta lost their rights to the games when they failed to pony up the latest, required installment of cash to the Premier League last week. Stay tuned for more as we get it.

Dammit. It's the UK rights. We're still stuck with FSC.

this is really funny watching everyone not understand how a three way tie works

It's great.

WHY ISN'T ITALY ADVANCING? THEY BEAT THE U.S. 3-1!! WHAT IS THIS GOAL DIFFERENTIAL STUFF? WHY DON'T THEY JUST USE HEAD-TO-HEAD?

It's like they're just completely disregarding Egypt as if they're not involved in the tie at all.

Reminds me of how Texas Tech didn't count -- according to the media -- in breaking the three-way Big Twelve South football tiebreaker.

I'm ok with it. Despite the head-to-head victory over OU I had a hard time justifying they were really better than them. Then again I am positive Texas could have put up at least the same result OU did against Florida ;-).

http://www.fifa.com/confederationscup/statistics/castrolindex/ranking.html

Deuce the seconds best midfielder in the tournament? Hmm...I think Landon and Mikey have been better.

He covers more ground than Landon and has a higher completion % than Mikey. I think the stats have a flaw in that when Deuce gives up possession, he tends to do it in a bad spot.

That must explain Gooch's low score. He hasn't covered much ground or made a lot of passes. He's been an animal in the box though.

No red cards for the U.S. today, please.

At least there is no Beasley, he would get torn to shreads. I'm curious to see Gooch and DeMerit, and Spector though, could be a chance to really shine.

A 2-1 loss would be a victory here.
