Portugal suuuuuuuucks.

 

Just to make sure I'm not being soccer-dumb, Portugal getting their GD blasted is very good for our chances of advancing, right? (on the assumption that we actually win any games)

 

Yes.

 

And USSoccer is wrong (I said it). This is the best result possible. Germany is and was always going to advance out of this group. The competition for the US is Portugal and Ghana. And one of those teams now is seriously hampered. A tie would have helped Portugal and I have no idea why anyone would want that.

I think there are questions as they advance further--their midfield is deep and outstanding but they don't have a striker and their backline is somewhat questionable (especially if Hummels is out). But those questions are for later.

That, and I overestimated Portugal. Even with all their guys, they weren't any good. Didn't defend, didn't pick up runners, didn't mark anyone, couldn't hold possession, offensively inept.

This is the funnest World Cup of my lifetime.

No way is this better than 2002 based on what we've seen so far. The match against Mexico was epic, and they played Germany pretty well.

I meant for the overall results, not just for the U.S.

 

I'm still pretty sure that the U.S. is going to get punted out pretty unceremoniously in three losses, so I'm not tying how much I enjoy this to their results.

Especially considering Iran-Nigeria isn't exactly a great distraction.

 

Yeah, although I thought the Swiss/Ecuador game was going to suck, too, and that turned out decently.

I'm not claiming to be some kind of savant. But we're not better than Germany, I doubt we're better than Portugal and we always lose to Ghana.

Counterpoints:

 

Portugal - In the jungle, favors us. Portugal will be without Pepe. If we beat Ghana, a draw is an acceptable result.

 

Germany - Germany might not have anything to play for. We might be in a position (with a win over Ghana and a draw to Portugal, and the assumed German win over Ghana) where all we need to do is not get blown out by 5 goals.

 

Ghana - both games in 06 and 10 were closely contested and could have gone either way, especially 2010. Essien is out. We're better than them.
