It depends on your perspective I guess. Personally I want Germany to win big, then Germany to win small, then a low scoring tie, then a high scoring tie, then bees to infest the stadium, then Portugal to win small, then armageddon, then Portugal to win big.

So in terms of the early game, in order of preference it's:

1) Germany win

2) Draw

3) Portugal win

Or do I switch 1 and 2?

I think that a 0-0 draw with lots of cards for Germany is the best outcome. Although I am very unconvinced that this particular German team is any good.

Yeah, it comes down to who you think we're more likely to get a result against and then you root for that team to lose big to give us the goal differential edge.

Germany and Portugal are sweating buckets in the tunnel. Twitter follows on the ground are saying anyone from the South would call the weather a nice, sunny day. I'm starting to believe in the fitness advantage that MLS players will have playing in the summer heat. I want to believe.

Boateng is finding a lot of space on the right and Khedira is staying deep to cover Ronaldo on the break. I could see the US doing the same thing with Johnson and Jones.

Germany have too many central attacking players on the field; if their plan is to have Boateng overlap CR7 is going to destroy them on the break

Portugal suuuuuuuucks.

Just to make sure I'm not being soccer-dumb, Portugal getting their GD blasted is very good for our chances of advancing, right? (on the assumption that we actually win any games)

Portugal getting blasted is good for two scenarios:

1) Both Portugal and USA win v Ghana and draw each other

2) USA, Portugal and Ghana finish with 3 points each.

Correct; if it wasn't going to be 0-0, the next best outcome was a lopsided German win. So far, with 3 goals against and a red card, things are going well.

It lowers our chances of winning the group, which mitigates some of the benefit, but yes. If we can win today then Portugal will NEED to beat us to have much of a prayer, and odds are much better now that Germany will have little to play for when we play them.

Yes.

And USSoccer is wrong (I said it). This is the best result possible. Germany is and was always going to advance out of this group. The competition for the US is Portugal and Ghana. And one of those teams now is seriously hampered. A tie would have helped Portugal and I have no idea why anyone would want that.
