Mateo > Clemens

O'Malley > Pettite

Being better than Roger is an accomplishment, Andy? Not so much.

I haven't been watching, but it doesn't look like Andy pitched a bad game.

I wasn't really trying to make much of a commentary on the game, just pointing out that Andy isn't all that special, whether or not he shut down the Cubs lineup.

Actually a pet peeve of mine is when people talk about one pitcher outpitching the other when they face each other head to head. It's impossible to judge such a thing. They are facing two different lineups, and luck can play such a big role. Weak ground balls can lead to double plays or 2-run singles, line drives can be caught with bloopers dropping in. You can talk about guys outpitching other guys over time, but in one game, it's a meaningless phrase.

What a great story for O'Malley, only way it could have been better was if this game meant anything for the Cubs postsseason chances.

Wow. O'Malley's parents were at the game. They got down to Houston fast.

Someone tipped him off yesterday that he was going to start for the Cubs today.

He's from Illinois, lifelong Cubs fan.

Well they were probably being realistic - thinking this could have been their only shot to see him in the bigs.

Now can the Cubs trade him for anything of value ? :D

Before we get too excited over the sweep, keep in mind: Houston sucks.

That said, congrats Ryan!

And we suck even more, so what does that prove?

So does everyone else in the NL except the 2 teams we play well against:)

HA HA HA HA! The Astros got "Cubbed"! I guess we're not the only team that falls like a house of cards the moment they face a soft-tossing lefty rookie

So assuming this weekend's sweep, the Cubs are 55-68...not a bad comeback.

Okay check it! If the Cards lose tonight we are 11.5 games out. When we sweep the Cards this weekend we are only 8.5 game out! Wow! How does it feel to witness a Cubs miracle in your lifetime!?!? GO CUBS!!!!

Ahh...optimism. :-D

That'd be awesome though.

Am I the only one with a bad feeling about this weekend series against the Cards? It seems everytime the media or fans dismiss a team as an "easy win" because of past success, it backfires right in our face. The Cubs have been living dangerously against the Cards at Wrigley. I would be shocked if we swept.

I don't have a great feeling about it. I doubt we sweep-I'm hoping we can take 2 out of 3 against them. It would be really fun to win all 10 at home though-so that is why part of the optimism comes from.

CubbieChris, we have 2 things that will hamper that thought to be that good. Remember, the Cardinals play the Reds tomorrow also. So we could be either 11, 12, or 13 games out of the Cardinals starting the series-but if we're 11, then the Reds will only be 1/2 game out of the Cardinals and playing Pittsburgh over the weekend-which means they would most likely be leading the division if we swept the Cardinals. I hope the Cardinals beat the Reds in both games remaining in their series-we have to catch the Reds anyway, and that way we can make headway in both the division and WC race (remember everyone, I don't think this will happen-but it could, and it's fun to dream).

I know Colt, it was a tongue and cheek post. I realize it's next to impossbile to happen, but dammit it's nice to dream!

The Cubs are playing a baseball game against another team, it's only natural to have a bad feeling.

I believe I heard Len say O'Malley was from Springfield. Down there, it's as likely to grow up Cards as Cubs, so glad he made the right decision. :)

It really was nice to see his folks there and have such a great game. It looks like a 15 hour drive to Houston from Springfield, but there look to be a couple of non-stops from St Louis to Houston. Glad that they got there for such an early game.

With a win on Friday, the Cubs will have their longest winning streak of the season.

I would like to nominate Fred for official game thread starter.
