So who is starting tomorrow? One of them might be getting a phone call right about now with Hill on the mound.

From memory is it Miller/Shaver/Veal?

I have no idea which of them would be likely...when's Jerome pitched?

Phil Rogers notes that Iowa is in Texas to play Round Rock, so it sounds like a done deal that Miller will get the call.

Dusty is psyched!

Chicagosports.com"]

Miller, a seven-year veteran signed after shoulder surgery, said he didn't know how hard he threw during a six-inning stint Friday for Double-A West Tenn. Baker, however, said reports had Miller's fastball up to 90 m.p.h., a significant increase from the low 80s he was throwing when he began his comeback with low-A Peoria.

"This guy's a man," Baker said of Miller, 29. "I'm excited because he's excited."

PCL Notebook"]Iowa Cubs (Chicago Cubs)

THE WEEK THAT WAS: The I-Cubs went 4-3 last week, moving their record to 63-59 overall. That puts them second in the American North Division.

THE PENNANT CHASE: Iowa is 1 1/2 games behind first-place Nashville in arguably the league's best pennant race.

WHO'S HOT/WHO'S NOT: 3B Casey McGehee has hit .343 in his last 10 games with two homers, 11 RBIs and eight runs scored. ... 1B Micah Hoffpauir has batted .320 in his last nine contests with two homers, 11 RBIs and eight runs. ... OF Felix Pie has hit .310 in his last 10 games with 12 runs scored. ... IF Luis Montanez has two hits in his last 27 at-bats.

Casey McGehee

THAT'S MORE LIKE IT: LHP Ryan O'Malley had a 1-3 record in July, despite a 3.18 ERA. In August, his fortunes have started to turn around -- he has won both of his starts to even his season record at 7-7. After posting a 4.50 ERA in the first three months of the season, O'Malley has lowered his season mark to 4.08.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK: "The month I spent in the bullpen, I actually realized how hard it was to come in a game, especially when the starter only goes three or four innings. It's always good on a hot day to give those (bullpen) guys a rest." --LHP Les Walrond to the Des Moines Register after seven innings of five-hit ball in a 5-1 win over Portland on Aug. 9.

SL Notebook"]West Tenn Diamond Jaxx (Chicago Cubs)

THE WEEK THAT WAS: West Tenn was 2-3 to run its second-half record to 23-25. The Diamond Jaxx are in fourth place in the SL North and 6 1/2 games out of first.

WHO'S HOT, WHO'S NOT: Federico Baez finally earned a decision as a starter. Unfortunately for the right-hander, it was in a 1-0 loss to Carolina on Monday. Baez is now 0-1 in seven starts with the Diamond Jaxx and has given up just seven earned runs in 34 2/3 innings for a 1.82 ERA. Overall, he's 2-1 with one save and a 2.01 ERA in 23 appearances. He was 0-3 with a 5.06 ERA in nine games at Triple-A.

PLAYER TO WATCH: 1B Brandon Sing has hit three home runs and driven in six runs in his last six games, giving him six homers and 30 RBIs in 64 games. "I had some eye problems in spring training, but now I've got everything fixed and I'm ready to put a good last month together," Sing told the Florida Times-Union. Sing's homer on Friday broke a 1-1 tie and put West Tenn up for good in a 4-2 victory over Jacksonville.

PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK: The Diamond Jaxx ended a six-game losing streak in dramatic fashion on Wednesday in a four-run 11th inning at Jacksonville that was highlighted by a three-run, inside-the-park homer by Gary Cates. The game went to extras with the Suns leading, 3-1, and in need of one strike to close the game. Brandon Sing slammed a two-run home run off Brian Akin to tie the. Suns CF Adam Greenberg told the Florida Times-Union: "I got a great jump on the ball and thought I had a chance to get it. It actually hit off the top of my glove. I was probably an inch away from making the play. In that situation I had to go for the catch. It's frustrating to be that close to a win and end up with a loss." The Cates homer was only the second in 84 games with the Diamond Jaxx this season, but his second in seven games.

FSL Notebook"]Daytona Cubs (Chicago Cubs)

THE WEEK THAT WAS: The Cubs went 3-3 to fall into a first-place tie with St. Lucie in the FSL East.

WHO'S HOT, WHO'S NOT: INF Joe Simokaitis, hoping to be the first member of his family to make it to the Major Leagues as a player, hit the first home run of his professional career on Thursday. The homer, in the first inning of a win against Tampa, was at the expense of Yankees starter Carl Pavano, who was making a rehabilitation start in Tampa. It was the 95th game of the season for Simokaitis, who played 51 games without homering for Peoria in the Midwest League last year. Drafted in the 10th round of the 2005 Amateur Draft, Simokaitis, a native of St. Louis, is the younger brother of former Cardinals mascot Fred the Bird (a.k.a. Tony Simokaitis). Simokaitis went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs in the 8-3 win to raise his average to .264. He has 30 RBIs. 3B Jemel Spearman's third home run of the season was a two-run, walkoff shot in the ninth inning that gave Daytona a 3-1 win over Lakeland on Aug. 6. Spearman had gone 56 games without homering since he swatted his second of the season at Brevard County. Starter Mark Holliman fell to 7-9 with a 4.49 ERA when he lost to Tampa on Monday. He gave up three earned runs over seven innings. He's 1-5 in his last seven starts and gave up four or more earned runs in six of those outings.

PLAYER TO WATCH: Right-hander Billy Petrick, a third-round draft pick by the Cubs in 2002, is off to a rough start in the FSL after compiling a 5-0 record and 2.33 ERA in the Class A Northwest League. Petrick gave up no homers in 36 1/3 innings for the Boise Hawks, but on Wednesday yielded three homers in 5 1/3 innings during a lost to Tampa. He's 1-2 with a 6.06 ERA in 16 1/3 innings over three starts for Daytona and has been tagged for 24 hits.

PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK: C Jake Muyco gave starter Justin Berg, who'd just come off the disabled list, a big boost by throwing out two would-be Brevard County base stealers in the top of the first inning in a 4-1 win over Daytona on Friday. "I think a big part of the game was in the first inning,'' Cubs manager Buddy Bailey told the Daytona Beach Journal-News. "Berg hadn't been out there in three weeks. They have a runner on and Muyco throws him out. They get a walk and Muyco throws that guy out. Next thing you know we're sitting on the bench. I think that was huge for our ballclub and Berg.''

MWL Notebook"]Peoria Chiefs (Chicago Cubs)

THE WEEK THAT WAS: The Chiefs remained fourth in the West but fell six games behind with a 2-4 week.

WHO'S HOT/WHO'S NOT: SS Ryne Malone is 7-for-17 (.412), and SS Ryan Lilly is 10-for-25 (.400). 1B Ryan Norwood is 4-for-31 (.129).

BROOM TIME: The Chiefs hadn't been swept in a three or four-game series this season until host Kane County wrapped up a four-game sweep with Tuesday's 7-1 victory. The Chiefs gave away leads in the first three losses. The Cougars outscored the Chiefs 22-8 in the series.

REVERSAL OF FORTUNE: The Chiefs are 8-12 on the road in the second half after finishing 19-14 in the first half.

REVERSE STING: Through Thursday, the Chiefs were 11-2 this season against Burlington.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK: "It went from 'How did we blow a six-run lead?' to 'How did we score six again?' " -- Manager Jody Davis told the Peoria Journal Star after the Chiefs led 6-0 in the first against Burlington, fell behind 9-6, then needed a six-run eighth to win, 12-9. The victory ended a season-high four-game losing streak.

NWL Notebook"]Boise Hawks (Chicago Cubs)

THE WEEK THAT WAS: The Hawks went 5-1 last week, improving their record to 30-23, first in the East Division.

WHO'S HOT: 3B Elvin Puello has been hitting the ball well lately, going .357 with one RBI and one run scored in his last nine games. CF Matt Camp hasn't tapered off much, hitting .359 in his last 10 games.

WHO'S NOT: CF Alfred Joseph has struggled a bit lately, going just 3-for-27 in his last 10 games. LF Tyler Colvin has hit a rare dry spell, hitting just .175 in his last nine.

PLAYER TO WATCH: SS Matt Matulia is starting to come around for the Hawks, hitting .467 with one home run and four RBIs in his last five games.

PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK: Fabian Jimenez Angulo pitched six scoreless innings, striking out two while allowing three hits, in Tuesday's 6-0 win over Spokane.

Dusty should be. One of his horses is back! Poor Gooz...

Miller's fastball close to 90 MPH?? I don't know where Dusty got his report, but I can assure you Miller's fastball in his rehab start with the Jaxx was nowhere near 90.. (unless the radar gun at the ballpark is 5-7 MPH slow..)

Peoria has now lost seven in a row.

Former Houston star Wade Miller pitches for the Cubs (63-61) tonight against the Express, who ironically are the Astros' triple-A affiliate.

Miller did a double-A rehab assignment last Friday for West Tenn, giving up one run on three hits while striking out four batters in six innings.

Miller is trying to come back from shoulder surgery last September.

According to the Chicago Cubs' Web site, he had good location during a bullpen session on Monday at Houston's Minute Maid Park where the big-league team is taking on the Astros.

Wow, Cubs. The one time the veteran would have made sense...

Rookie comes out of no where and pitches a shut out was a better story than veteran returns to his old stomping grounds and gets pounded by his old team ;)

I don't know if the Astros would have pounded Miller, after last night's game, plus their offense is pretty Cubbyesque. Nonetheless, I'm glad Hendry decide on O'Malley instead of giving into Baker and his disturbing need for horse, Miller.

It doesn't matter what Dusty says, Wade Miller will be up next week (barring any setbacks).

Kaitlin, Chicago: Will Jeff Samardja from ND be what the cubs are looking for in SP next year

SportsNation Jim: (2:05 PM ET ) Next year? No. He's not close to ready for the big leagues. My gut feeling still is that if he goes in the first round of the NFL draft, the Cubs will lose him.

Kevin (Manassas): Who in the Cubs farm system do you see possibly contributing in the Majors over the next few years?

SportsNation Jim: (2:28 PM ET ) That's the problem for the Cubs -- not much. They've promoted so many guys this year that the only ones left who may contribute over the next two years are Felix Pie, Eric Patterson and Sean Gallagher. And Pie's star has lost some luster with a so-so season in Triple-A, and I don't think Patterson is anything special. Gallagher's stuff has improved more than expected this year, so that's a positive. But the Cubs are going to have to look elsewhere but just within to solve all of their problems.

Jack (Chicago): Cubs will win a WS in my lifetime, I'm 26?

SportsNation Jim: (3:03 PM ET ) It has to happen, right? But don't count on it in the next couple of years.

Frank (Charleston, SC): ditka or a hurricane

SportsNation Jim: (3:10 PM ET ) I live outside of Chicago, so I'm compelled to go with Da Coach.

Dave (Chicago): Best restaurant in Chicago? Portillos?

SportsNation Jim: (3:15 PM ET ) I love the veal parmigan at Harry Caray's.

Jim Callis.

Mike (St. Louis): Jim, what's with the one name screen name? Are you going Pele/Reynaldo on us?

SportsNation Jim: (3:13 PM ET ) That's what happens when the ESPN.com gurus don't set up the Moderator Name for me. Couldn't remember if I was supposed to go with the surname or not.

Hasn't Callis been very complimentary of The Don! recently? I'm surprised he's not on that list.

Perhaps because he's still lower half of the system.

I expect both Gallagher and Veal will make their big league debuts next season.

Getting back to the playoffs looks like it got a bit harder for the DJaxx - Arizona's Carlos Gonzalez was promoted from High-A Lancaster to the Southern League North-leading Tennessee.

I'm kinda disappointed, I was supposed to head up to Lancaster in the next few weeks to see Gonzalez. Guess I'll head out to Rancho and see Nick Adenhart instead, but it's always tougher to match up a game with a pitcher.

That's what I was thinking, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him move quickly, given how he's pitching (next season if not this season due to Daytona playoff aspirations, etc). Just curious.
