I was looking at my fantasy OF, currently pieced together due to slumps and injuries, and noted that it is occupied by the following guys:

1) Robb Quinlan (ANA)

2006 and career stats

2) Melky Cabreara (NYY)

2006 and career stats

3) Craig Wilson (PIT - NYY)

2006 and career stats

My analysis:

Wilson is a very balanced in OBP and Slugging, and wouldn't cost more than 5 or 6 mill per year for 3 years. (we've talked about him frequently here)

Cabrera, admittedly, has a low slugging per., though he has hit 3 HRs in the last 7 days and is a mere 21 years old, so he is very likely to get better.

Quinlan is 29 and has never been an everyday player, but he sluggs a ton and has recently been playing every day for the Halos. Only issue with him is that he doesn't walk very much, but he could definitely be had on the cheap.

What about a 2007 OF of Wilson in RF, Cabrera in CF, Quinlan in LF? I admit that I have not thought through the defensive implications or how we could divest ourselves of Jones in order to facilitate these deals.

Well, RF would be covered defensively...

I dont like it. Cubs need a impact bat in the OF. None of those guys you mentioned will be a impact. I doubt the Yankees will deal Melky, considering Sheffield could be a FA.

Their OF next year will be Matsui, Damon and Abreu, so I don't know that Sheffield is a factor there anyway. I don't think they'll let Cabrera go anyway because he's a vauable guy to them off the bench and in the situation they're in now with injuries and an aging team.

I do think that OF for the Cubs would be exponentially better than the one they've got now because those guys can actually get on base with the exception of Quinlan who looks a lot like Jones to me from the other side of the plate.

Wilson I wouldn't mind at all. I'd like to see him in a Cub uniform. The same goes for Melky. The kid has potential and is fairly young too, and has good plate discipline, especially for his age at the major league level. I watch him play all the time b/c I'm right in Yankee territory, and he could be a star. The Yanks won't have room for him as a starter though, unless Bernie retires, Sheffield leaves as a FA, and Matsui or Abreu becomes the DH. I would like him on the team, but the Yankees won't give him up. They've learned their lesson about giving uip young players. Three years ago we could have gotten him, but not now unless we offer the Yankees Carlos Zambrano, which is out of the question. Quinlin is interesting. Yes, he can his, but he dosn't take too many walks. As far as I'm concerned, he is no more than an adequate utility player. That said, I would prefer him next year over Mabry again. The fact that Quinlin can play 1B, 3B, and OF is helpful, and he's younger, a better hitter, and probably cheaper than Mabry. Your thinking isn't that bad, but a starting outfield of Wilson, Cabrera, and Quinlin isn't a very strong one.

Quinlan would be a nice RH bat off the bench. I believe he can play 3B in a pinch, but he would be a decent option at the corner OF and 1B. I, of course, like Craig Wilson too. But I still don't want him being the Cubs best OF. If you are moving Jones to CF, with Wilson in RF and go out and get a difference maker in LF, then I'd be all for Wilson. But the scenario I see the Cubs getting Wilson involves him playing LF over Murton, which is likely not worth the money you would spend on Wilson over Murton.

BTW, if we are basing next year's OF on someone's fantasy team it should be mine. I have Sizemore, Holliday, and Crawford.

Berkman, Beltran, Rivera.

Juan Rivera? Having his best year in the majors this year. .305 BA 20HR 64RBI .353OBP. He has had only 292AB this year. He would be putting up better numbers than Vlad, if he had atleast 450AB at this time.

In one keeper league OF I have Bay, Sizemore and Rios. On the bench I have Hermida and Quentin.

In another league I have Abreu, Dunn, DeJesus, Bonds & Gomes.

As Meatloaf would say, 2 out of 3 ain't bad.

Yup. He's had a great year. Picked up him up as a FA about 2 months ago. Allowed me to trade CLee for pitching.

Lee, Abreu, Vlady

No CF for real life, though.

Back on topic - it looks to me that Cabrera has difference-maker potential. Anyone else agree?

Melky? Definitely not. He's a pudgy, defensively challenged player with a mediocre minor league career to date. He's similar to Ronny Cedeno in a way, without the luxury of playing a position where offense is an afterthought.
