But it wasn't really the running game that needed to make huge strides. It was the passing game. Jones is already pretty proven, and Benson, by all accounts, was having a very good camp. I guess I've been holding a pessimistic enough view of the Cubs, that I have a lot of saved up optimism to use on the Bears... :D

Well, this is really just the first thing that I've worried about with the Bears. I didn't mind the draft. I liked the Griese signing. I'm pretty confident they'll be a good team this year and can make some noice. But both RBs going down is not something to laugh off.

That's true. And I'm not really laughing it off. Just refusing to stress myself over it...at least till we get a couple preseason games under our belt.

I would be much more worried about the quarterback situation if I was the Bears. The defense should be solid again and I don't think both RB's should be out very long. Grossman finally staying healthy and showing what he can do is the question mark.

be worried that a third fluke injury is going to happen? when they have a legitimate backup now? the Bears QB situation is better than it has been in years, perhaps decades.

now you wanna talk about QB concerns, let's talk about the silver and black.

Brian Griese will screw it up somehow. It will happen.

As for the Raiders, I don't really mind Aaron Brooks. I have absolutely no expectations for this team whatsoever. If they play well and go 7-9 or 8-8, great, they're making strides. If they play like I expect them to and go 4-12, great, they'll get a good draft pick. And I have heard that Andrew Walter is doing well in camp. Hopefully I'll get to watch one of the preseason games so I'll get to see him play.

Good news from the Sun-Times...

The Bears got more good news at running back as the MRI exam on Cedric Benson's left shoulder did not reveal any further damage, a source close to the player said. The Sun-Times reported Monday that Benson's shoulder was slightly dislocated and it popped back into joint on the field. The timetable for his return remains 2-3 weeks.

i agree with dan bernstein--urlacher is a "desert simpleton".

if you live in the midwest, it's the same thing as a "river rat"; in the west, it's "mountain people"; in the east, it's good ol' "hillbilly".

i guess that's not the point, because mike brown is supposed to be "real smart", at least he should have known better.

Did you even see the hit? Brown barely touched him, Urlacher's hit wasn't that bad and what I'd expect of practice.

It really didn't look that bad, I hope it's not too serious.

no, i didn't see it, and the report that i heard on espn 1000 was that urlacher and brown "pinballed" benson as he was making a catch over the middle. i only knew what i was told, so i apologize for the knee-jerk response.

that said, urlacher and brown both acted like benson was on a different team when questioned about it.

Bernstein is just an angry soul who feels the need to insult others randomly to re-affirm his intelligence. I'd think twice before taking his attitude or philosophies to heart. Just a bit of advice...

bernstein is actually one of the smarter and progressive radio personalities on the air. the fact that he likes to make fun of everyone is just an added bonus.

i don't think boers brings much to the table and think a pairing of lawrence holmes and bernstein would make for much more informative radio. holmes likes to stay on point where boers will go off on some tangential joke or anecdote.

that said, boers and bernstein are the best thing going on the air in chicago today.

mac, jurko, and harry are just terrible now.

There's a video link earlier in the thread if you're interested in seeing it....it's not great quality, but you can get an idea of how trivial the contact was.

thanks, but i'll take everyone's word for it. every other person i've talked to has said it wasn't a serious hit.

And even better, it doesn't appear to be a serious injury.

the hit on the Eagles 3rd string RB in the HOF game didn't look like anything either. A-Train's plow through Strahan that ended Strahan's 2005 season didn't look like anything, nor do alot of the hits that have sent football players to wheelchairs

human anatomy is weird.

I pretty much agree with you here. Bernstein is at his best when Terry is on vacation and he's doing the show alone. He stays on topic, and his jokes are momentary and not taken to the extreme. Bernstein is clearly the strength of that show. I do think they are more interested in belittling opinions that don't match their own, rather than having an open-minded discussion, but I know that going into the show, so I just take what I want from it.

yes, scripted rants read to seem extemporaneous and forced fake laughter are great. at this rate, he will remain a 'progressive radio personality' for the rest of his career.

the guy is a tool, and Chicago sports radio (and sports journalism in general) is one giant toolbox. the only one worth a damn is Zach Zabeman (sp?)

I don't agree, but I can certainly understand the point of view. He's certainly not for everyone.

That said, Lawrence Holmes is very good. And Zach is just kinda ok. For me anyway.

Zaidman is terrible. He uses the most specious reasoning and makes a terrible habit of repeating his main point over and over. He relies on sports cliche and the way he talks-putting the wrong emphasis on words in sentences and asking questions like he's about to drop some sort of profound, dramatic point-are annoying.

Holmes and Bernstein are very good. Boers is getting worse by the minute. Abbatacola and Goff are decent, too.

those things are hard to pick up on when you don't listen to sports radio for extended periods of time. from what I've heard, his break down of the Bears tends to be some of the best and most reasoned analysis. he was one of the few who predicted the Bears to finish anywhere but the bottom of the central last year. Bernstein on the other hand is way to willing to ride the tide of the prevailing sentiment, and his tendancy to hangup and make fun of callers when they bring up good points contrary to his POV, instead of taking them on head on, is nauseating.

to show how much sports radio I listen to these days (was alienated a long time ago, particularly since I now have an Air America affiliate to listen too) I haven't even heard of the last two you listed.

This is just flat out not true. He was on the anti-Orton bandwagon FAR before it was popular last season. They had caller after caller arguing against him, and he was asking them legitimate questions, to which many of them had no answers to.

And if you don't listen to Chicago sports radio on a frequent basis, I'm not sure how you're able to make this statement.

To go into this further, he's generally less on the side of conventional wisdom than any other Score host, and is a terrific interviewer. He almost never shies away from asking pointed questions, which is one reason they have trouble getting certain people to appear on their show now.

To get back on topic a bit, B&B actually had what I thought was a fantastic interview with Jerry Angelo yesterday. I only caught some of it, but they really got him into talking about what it's like to get an NFL general manager...it was really quite interesting.

ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports the Chicago Bears apparently have a renewed interest in Denver Broncos WR Ashley Lelie. Although the Bears still don't appear ready to trade RB Thomas Jones for Lelie, they may be ready to trade DL Michael Haynes for Lelie. Published reports indicated that the Bears recently offered a fourth-round draft choice for Lelie, but that the Broncos are holding out for more, with several other potential suitors interested in Lelie. However, adding a player to the trade mix like Haynes, a player who seems to have fallen out of favor with Chicago coaches, might get the Broncos' interest.

Uh...yes please. I'll gladly trade a bust in Haynes and a late pick for a solid WR.

Haynes is owed a lot of money too this year. He doesnt produce what he is worth. Im not a cap expert but if he is released i think they have a cap hit too. Something like $2.6m in 2006 salary if i remember correctly.

I wonder what the Bears could get from the Jets for Jones with the probability that Curtis Martin is done.

this makes it a little more complicated ...

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news;_ylt=AmGmo0qdWr.y.qX_b56POX1DubYF?slug=ap-bears-benson&prov=ap&type=lgns

(Benson to miss 2-3 weeks)

... but seems the Jets have to do something to get an every down back.

what you hearing in NY Goony?

My dad said he heard on the radio (FWIW) that the Bears said they'd only take a 1st Rounder from the Jets. Good move, IMO, there isn't much on the Jets that I'd take, and maybe they'll get the Jets to feel like they have to get an RB and do it. It'd be cool to potentially have a top 5 pick next year.

Just got back from TC today

Not much to say, didn't really take notes...

They didn't practice very long or very hard, it was the second practice of the day so I understand.

The two new 'Backs in camp look...average. We're gonna need Thomas Jones or Benson back, for sure. Adrian Peterson had some good burst and power.

Griese threw a couple of poor balls, one was picked off and a couple probably should have been.

Orton was all around awful.

Grossman was sufficient.

I noticed the quarterbacks mostly checked it down, rarely testing the heart of the secondary. I don't know how that'll work during the season.

I got Larry Mayer to say hi to me.

Gould and the other kicker (Huston? ) had a little bit of a field goal challenge, both had some very nice makes (and close misses) from 47 and 53 yards out.

Uhh

Pictures I might show later.

Is Haynes really that bad?

I've heard reports he just got lost in the Bears amazing Dline depth and is an ok backup DE. If he is, then I hope the broncos hold out for either a 3rd round pick, or one of the Philly Dlineman rumored to be up for trade.

Posted
Ok, Denver would be idiotic if they did that trade. To get garbage in return for a solid #2 receiver does not make any sense.

But you have to realize, Lelie isn't reporting to camp anytime soon, and he's a FA after this year I believe. It's a cap move and a team morale move. Fourth round picks aren't trash anymore (Nathan Vasher anyone?), and Michael Haynes has never been given a chance here in Chicago. It's definitely a better deal for the Bears, but it makes sense for Denver too.

Talk about selling low...if Denver would've traded Lelie in the offseason, they could've gotten so much more for him rather than just a 4th round pick and Michael Haynes. Michael Haynes is a bust, plain and simple...I don't think a change of scenery will help him out that much. If I were Denver, I would probably request at least a 2nd round pick for Lelie.
