I personally find it very interesting and peculiar that Maddux has done well in back-to-back starts in a pitcher-friendly environment like Dodger Stadium. And it is unsual for players to go through slumps and hot streaks.

Wow on Maddux's pitching line. 68 pitches in 8 innings. I hope Maddux gets to pitch against the Cubs during the series in September. He could set the record for least number of pitches thrown in a complete game.

I haven't tried to calculate it out, but my understanding from people who have is that -- barring any changes to the LA rotation -- he wouldn't be due to pitch at Wrigley that series.

They were saying during the game that it would be the only game pitched this season that took a pitcher less than 10 pitches per inning ... but he subsequently hit 10 pitching in one inning. The per inning pitch count would still be less, though. There was some controversey about him not pitching the 9th.

It was a cool game to watch. Schmidt was good, too.

The key for Maddux has always been location. Even at 88 mph he's not going to overpower anyone.

As for Maddux dogging it. If he was selfish enough to dog it wouldn't he also be selfish enough to pitch well enough last year to continue his 15 wins streak? Wouldn't he throw harder to win enough games to get another multi year deal?

another problem with this thought of dogging it is that he pitches terrible it lessens the chance of anyone wanting him, while if he threw great it would greatly appeciate the chance he gets dealt. the cubs weren't contending if he were 15-0. if he truly wanted to be dealt there would be no reason to tank.

two facts of maddux' 2nd career with the cubs. 1. he threw better after the all star break every year. 2. he pitched for a pretty bad team and really did not get a win his entire tenure were he did not throw very well. i doubt that there is more than 1-2 wins of his that the offense bailed him out. if he was bad, he was really bad...if he was good the cubs usually won or were in the game.

i always thought that if he went to a pitcher friendly park like san diego, seattle or la he would be a bonus to that team.

if he pitches like this the rest of the year, i will be very happy for him and even as probably his biggest fan, i will say we still needed to deal him. both for his sakes and for thefactthat the kids need to throw, and it simply would not be right to put greg maddux in the bullpen .

i have to say that as of today, maddux seems to be the best deadline pickup so far.

Maddux surely was dogging it when he went 5-0 to start the season, too.

Why is it hard to accept the fact that he's in a string of good starts. This string may or may not last the remainder of the season. He had a string of good starts to begin the year, and then a string of not so good ones. That's baseball....especially in regards to a 40-year old pitcher.

To think Maddux was dogging it because he didn't like the Cubs is ludicrous if not paranoia.

I guess the charm wore off with LA and Maddux is back to doggin' it again.

Either that or he's always been bad in Arizona.

ETA: though now that I look at the boxscore, only 2 of the run were earned runs. I'm not sure if that counts as dogging it or not.

Actually, he has always been unusually bad against the D-Backs, even with Atlanta. They're just one of those teams that have always inexplicably beaten him up, no matter where they play.

I know ... and that's one of the reasons one wouldn't suggest he was 'dogging it' yesterday, just like his putting together some very nice starts in August after joining the Dodgers doesn't mean he was 'dogging it' with the Cubs.

It still baffles me the love Cubs' fans have for Maddux....I think we saw more great starts out of Kerry Wood in Cubs' blue then we did Maddux, yet the collective we holds him in higher regard then the fans he won those four cy-young awards for.

He won a Cy with the Cubs didn't he?

You must be too young to remember Maddux before he went to the Braves.

When Kerry Wood wins a Cy Young with the Cubs, then your complaint would hold some water.

When exactly did Maddux lose his chin and start looking like Rick Reuschel?

Congrats to Greg - bet it feels darn good to not be ending the season in last place on a team for an organization that looks to be going nowhere for awhile.

Hope he wins another WS ring!

If you're Greg Maddux, how upset are you that the Cubs ruined one of the longest and greatest W-L records in baseball? Discounting last season he has won at least 15 games in 18 (almost) straight seasons.
