That game was one of the wildest games I've ever seen. Baker actually snapped in that game as well as he couldn't execute a double switch properly.

I wish he would do that more often. Get in an umpires face. Throw things. Go on a profanity laced tirade in the media. He won't do it b/c of his 5-year old son. Does anyone else think the age of his son is why he doesn't do these things like Ozzie?? B/c Ozzie's kids are all grown-up.

That whole season was wild. 2003 was a great run, but for sheer entertainment value 2004 was the most fun baseball season I've ever followed.

Anything else White Sox-related you want to bring up in this thread?

My best memories of that season:

1) Sosa's bases-loaded fully extended diving catch against (I think) Pittsburgh to preserve a 1-0 Cubs win. We really needed that win at the time.

2) Following Gameday from work and not believing my eyes when Barrett hit the double to drive in Hollandsworth and Walker against the A's.

3) Nomar's first game with the Cubs and Maddux's second attempt to get his 300th win. Nomar got his first NL RBI that day to get some insurance runs.

4) Sosa/Alou go back to back against the Reds. Was that really the game that Dusty got ejected cause he couldn't pull off a double switch or the ump didn't hear him correctly? I remember the fans throwing trash onto the field after that.

5) Maddux's 300th win against the Giants and Bonds.

6) Sweep of Sox at Wrigley.

7) 4 game sweep early in the season against the Astros.

2004 was really fun until the last few weeks wasn't it?

Not even the last few weeks, the VERY last week. They led the Wild Card race with one week remaining in the season.

The downfall started with Victor Diaz's home run on September 25. The Cubs finished the year 2-7. Finishing 5-4 would have tied them with Houston for the Wild Card.

That April game against the Reds was bizarre. Baker got run for the double switch, Freel's catch was crazy, and then IIRC Wood was dealing in the 9th but got hosed on 2 straight curveballs that were strikes to 2 different hitters (Casey and Dunn, IIRC). After Cinci took the lead and Wood got pulled, he sprinted out at the home plate ump and lost it on him and got run.

The atmosphere at the park was weird all year, too. It was like the entire season was a playoff series.

The game against the Mets that Dempster gave up the 3 run shot in the 9th, and Mercker the Diaz HR in the 10th was sickening.

I don't think it has anything to do with his son. Are there no crazy people with young kids? Are all people with young children perfect role models? All people are different, if he didn't have any kids he'd still most likely act the same.

I think it does, for the only reason being that Reds game where Baker got tossed a couple years ago and went crazy (the game where Martinez got called out for batting out of order). The story in the paper was that when he got home, his son was scared to see him and called him something like crazy daddy. Baker apologized, and said he would control himself better in the future-and he has, to the detriment of some.

I remember that. That's probably just him trying to sound like a good dad. He was probably just trying to cover up his double-switch blunder.

Don't forget Wood got suspended for 5 games (one start) which rarely happens unless a pitcher does more than just yell at an ump, then had his appeal denied. The Cubs were well-known as being a team with a temper problem all season, and umpires as well as the MLB disciplinary office seemed determined to take advantage of that.

Wow, was that really all the same game?

I remember all of those incidences, but I don't recall them being in the same game. I certainly remember a Wood ejection after he walked two straight hitters, but I don't remember that being in the 9th inning. BTW, the score was 10-10 in the 9th. What kind of pitcher was "dealing" with the score 10-10?

I think he meant series there. The double switch and the 2 home runs to win the game 11-10 was on Friday. Wood got tossed in a 3-2 loss on Saturday. I can't remember for sure which game Freel made that wonderful catch was in.

Hawkins gave up the 3-run, game tying home run to Diaz with two outs in the 9th. Some no-name hit the game-winning home run off Mercker in the 11th.

God that game sucked. I remember watching it in NY right before my aunt's wedding. The announcers were just saying how he hadn't hit a homerun in Shea or something....That just crushed me. And, I guess, the Cubs.

I specifically remember the feeling I had when that was hit. About 4-5 seconds of shock, then I felt a hard pain sink slowly from my heart to my stomach. I looked over at my friend and he looked like the same exact thing was going on.

I was on the L approaching the Addison stop from work and listening on my walkman when Alou hit the 2nd of the back-to-back against the Reds. I yelled and everyone looked my way as I explained what happened.

I was at the A's game with Barrett driving in Walker, awesome ending. I also have Pat and Ron's call of that on my ipod, I've probably listened to that 75-100 times (it's "Top Rated"). :)

Nice video, thanks for putting it together.

The Wood game was not in the same game as the Dusty ejection, Freel catch and back to back shots by Sosa and Alou. It was the day before.

The Wood ejection game:

The day BEFORE, the Sosa/Alou/Dusty/Freel game:

I only skimmed this thread, so apologies if this was corrected already.

I was at the back to back walk off game. good times.

the double switch was the culmination of really bad ball strike calls. I was in the bleachers (the guy in front of me got Hollandsworths HR ball) and we had no idea what happened, so it was litter the field time, more due to being fed up with the bad ball/strike calls. I was incredulous that Miley was complaining because the Cubs were getting absolutely hosed.

You're right, my mistake. It was Dempster that walked 2 guys in the 9th, prompting Baker to bring in Hawkins for one of his patented 91 MPH fastballs belt high.

I remember just being in absolute shock. I couldn't believe they blew it.
