If we went the Marlins' route, wouldn't we be a young team? We could go down that path with a team like this:

I thought it was obvious that I wasn't being serious -- I was just looking for ex-Marlins that Hendry could add to the club (i.e. Sheffield, Lowell, Encarnacion) to go along with the ex-Marlins we already have (Pierre, Lee).

I wasn't being very serious either, just following what the current Marlins' plan is (small budget, build from within your system).

Your 2007 Chicago Cubs:

1) Pierre CF

2) Izturis SS

3) D. Lee 1B

4) C. Lee LF

5) Ramirez 3B

6) Jones RF

7) Barrett C

8) Cedeno 2B

9) Pitcher

That is my "Dusty" lineup. Personaly I flip Jones and Barrett.

Bench

Perez IF

Pagan OF

Blanco C

I would like to list Nevin here but that ain't gonna happen.

Two more mystery players. One corner IF guy along Mabry lines and maybe another OF.

I could live with that lineup, but the bench scares me.

This is minor, but I don't think Blanco will be on the bench. I think he makes in the range of 1.5mil now. He is a free agent. I think they'll just bring up Soto.

Alot of people dont like the deal for Iztuirs, but the majority of people here include Izturis, and not Cedeno in the 07 plan???

I think they are trying to create a lineup reflective of the belief that Izturis is here to stay.

Any other signings/trades are hope(signing Schmidt etc.). But, they feel there is no hope that Izturis will be gone, so he is included in the 2007 plans.

If I get the team I posted I can live with Izturis. :D

As others have noted, the thread title is "realistic" roster. Izturis is here to stay, whether I like it or not. If I'm making my own team I'd see what Baltimore would want for Tejada, and throw Izturis into the deal. But realistically, he's the SS in 2007 and, most likely, 2008.

I'd rather have Izturis than Cedeno, yes.

It looks like Andruw Jones has been place on waivers.

The Eagle-Tribune has learned that a recent target of the Red Sox at the non-waiver trading deadline, Atlanta outfielder Andruw Jones, was placed on waivers by the Braves Tuesday.

The move by the Braves starts a process in which teams have a chance to claim Jones, which expires after 47 hours (The team with the worst record is allowed to choose first, but if the worst record is shared by teams in both leagues, then the team in the same league is allowed first choice). If the outfielder does pass through waivers, then it would allow Atlanta to trade Jones to a team such as the Red Sox, who had been offered the center fielder in a package including Coco Crisp, Craig Hansen and Jon Lester the night before the trading deadline.

Whatever team claims Jones gets 48 hours to exclusively negotiate a deal with the Braves. A prime candidate to stake a claim before the Red Sox's turn comes up would be the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, who were the other team Atlanta inquired about regarding a potential pre-non-waiver trade.

We would be able to get first cracks at claiming him off of waivers since our record is so abysmal. This is a type of move I don't see Hendry doing, but he should definitely look into trading for Jones. It would go a long way to making out offense better for '07.

Like I said, I don't see Hendry thinking out of the box like this, but he should.

Atlanta would probably pull him back. If they were looking to trade with Boston, they probably don't have any interest in a trade from the Cubs, and I'm not sure Hendry has any interest in matching the Red Sox offer. This would just annoy both the Boston GM and Atlanta GM, since the Cubs have nothing to gain by blocking and no realistic chance to trade with Atlanta. Hendry should look into it though, and if he gets a sense that Atlanta would let him go for nothing, or make a trade that helps the Cubs, go for it.

Just about everyone is put on irrevocable waivers with the chance that if there is a deal to be made they would slip to that team. Waiver deals for big time players are extremely rare because they always get blocked by another contender and are pulled back off of waivers.

Realistically speaking here, assuming I'm working with a real budget, and assuming Dusty is gone:

1B: DLee: $13 million. Signed thru 2010.

2B: Fontenot/Theriot $.3 million. Better stick, OBP than Cedeno.

SS: Cedeno $.4 million. Is Izturis really worth $3.7 million more than Ronny? No way.

3B: ARam $12 million. Sign to extension by kicking in another year and another mil per year.

INF: Neifi $2.5 million. Not a bad 25th man.

INF: Fontenot/Theriot $.3 million. Can back up 3rd and 1st, too.

C: Barrett $4 million. Signed thru 2007.

C: Soto $.3 million

LF: Soriano: $15 million. Probably will take 4/$60 to sign.

CF: Jones $5.3 million. Signed thru 2008.

RF: Murton $.4 million. Small raise.

OF: Pagan $.4 million. Can back up CF. Small raise.

OF: Anyone who can pinch run or pinch hit $.3 million

Total position players: $54.2 million

SP: Zambrano $11 million. Will get a big raise--I'd sign him long-term.

SP: Prior: $7 million. Gets a raise from $3.7 mil.

SP: Schmidt: $12 million. Will probably have to give him 3/$36.

SP: Marshall/Marmol/Hill $.3 million

SP: Marshall/Marmol/Hill $.3 million

RP: Eyre: $3.5 million. Signed thru 2008.

RP: Howry: $4.0 million. Signed thru 2008.

RP: Wuertz: $.4 million. Small raise from league min

RP: Ohman: $.7 million. Small raise

RP: Guzman $.3 million

RP: Mateo/someone else: $.3 million

RP: Wood: $5 million. $3 mil buyout plus $2 mil for 07. Will close.

Total pitchers: $44.8 million

Salary eaten: Rusch $3 million. DFA

Total payroll: $102 million

Notes:

--Trade of Izturis should net a couple of young position-player prospects.

--Trade Dempster. Wood would be an outstanding closer, for the same $$. Probably wouldn't net much.

--Trade or DFA Novoa. I've never been impressed.

Lineup:

Murton

Barrett

Lee

Ramirez

Soriano

Jones

Fontenot/Theriot

Cedeno

Defensively, we'd be middle of the pack. But we'd score some runs. Unless someone got injured. There's not a lot of depth.

Don't you mean revocable waivers? I don't think very many guys get placed on irrevocable waivers.

And on that subject, when Boston did that to Manny Ramirez in 2004 we should have been all over it.

Am I crazy for thinking that Hendry's comments that lead us to believe he wants to keep Izturiz is just him talking him up/trying to make the trade sound good and that he may be looking to trade him as part of a bigger deal to improve a spot in the offseason?

I think the answer is yes(about being crazy) but would like to hear your opinions.

That has to be what he means. Irrevocable waivers are for other purposes (such as outrighting a player to the minors when he's out of options or to remove him from the 40-man roster).

1. Freel 2b

2. Murton LF

7. Jones LF

8. Izturis SS

Although i'd rather dump jones for a shoe horn, acquire brady clark along with koskie, and bat Clark and freel 1-2.

yes, i have mad man love for brady clark, who is possibly one of the least appreciated players in the game--although paid fairly.
