On cubs.com there is an article covering general news about the Cubs. IN it is an interesting note about Maddux. Here is the link:

and here is the quote

When Cubs bench coach Dick Pole returned to his locker after Wednesday's game, there was a baseball waiting for him, autographed by Greg Maddux.

The message was, "Thanks for all the help, 200th loss."

When Maddux lost to Roger Clemens and the Astros on Wednesday, it was his 200th career loss.

Maddux recorded six assists in the game, the sixth time he's accomplished that feat. He holds the National League record for most times leading a season in assists, doing so nine times. He currently has 33 this season. The single-season record? Since 1900, it's 141, set by Christy Mathewson.

Maddux has 1,067 assists. Mathewson holds the Major League mark, totaling 1,489 in his career.

Sort of an odd thing to hear about from Maddux and sort of an odd thing to see reported by the coaching staff.

Maddux does have a sense of humor. He was joking with Pole.

That, or he is straight, flat-out, friggin' insane.

Sounds to me like Maddux kidding around with a guy who was involved in his career from the beginning.

If he wants to kid around with Dick Pole, can't he just make fun of his name?

He has so many times that it's lost all meaning.

I read that too, I don't think I would take that with humor, but a slap in the face. sounded like he as upset. I wouldn't do that to a friend

you're just a stick in the mud, hardcore. 8)

It was a joke, ok. Nothing more, nothing less. And I am VERY POSITIVE that Maddux and Pole laugh it off as a joke.

Because the type of jokes that revolve around Dick Pole are pretty much juvenile, sophomoric/fraternity type jokes. And I don't see Maddux as pulling a rowdy joke like that. Signing the baseball of his 200th loss, sounds like the kind of joke, Greg would pull.

I read somethin awhile back about how Pole made a joking remark to Maddux about him never getting a milestone ball, 300th win, 3000 k, etc...

Greg joked back by saying he would give him his 200 loss ball.

I read about this exchange months ago, Greg was just fufilling a promise.

I think this is all just a plea by Maddux to get himself traded...

I have a weird hunch that is how it will all turn out.

God Damit.. and I like him in Cubbie Blue too.

That's my type of humor. I would make a joke like that as well. I highly doubt that Maddux was being serious about this.
