You would think he has trade value. He is hitting .301 with 12 HR's and will make about $2M the rest of the season and then he is a free agent.

"Not one person from the front office has come up to congratulate me," Hillenbrand said. "Just the little people have -- like you [reporters] have. That's a disgrace."

That should make Bruce's day.

Paging Mr. Miles...Paging Mr. Bruce Miles, you have a call from a Mr. Hildenbrand.

For some reason, I think he joins the nuthouse in Oakland. It just fits.

He's certainly not a Beane-player.

My guess is San Diego.

He may not be a "Beane-player," but he actually wouldn't be a bad pickup for the A's for the remainder of the season. He can hit the ball, he can play 1B and 3B, and his salary isn't overly expensive. Chavez has been plagued by forearm injuries this year, and Johnson is going through a sophomore slump. It wouldn't be a bad move for Oakland.

I'm unclear about this-- does this mean they have a week to trade him and then release him, or is this an irrevocable waiver/release scenario? Because if it is, and the Cubs via their horrific record have close to first dibs on the guy (the team with the worst record in the other league has first dibs, and then 2nd worst) we should definitely nab him, if for no other reason than to trade him at the deadline. Also makes A-Ram expendeble at the deadline, and despite what Hendry keeps saying, I really believe-- nay, hope that no one is safe. I've always liked this guy's bat.

Don't overlook the possibility of Boston - they could use a solid pinch hitter as well as someone to spell Lowell and Youkalis in the stretch run.

He sounds really annoying, but I'd like to see the Cubs gets him. If they can steal him for nothing, and somehow trade him for value, that would be great. Or, if they could keep him around he'd be the best bench player on the team, and provide insurance in case Ramirez opts out of his deal, or if they magically trade Ramirez in a deal for ARod, who could play SS again.

But reading the story on the TBJ website makes me question this guy a bit:

He was away from the team for 3 days midseason for an adoption? I know adoption is a difficult process, and I know family comes first. But players normally don't miss more than a game or two when their wives' give birth. Why did he have to miss 3 games midseason? Then he supposedly shows up late and is goofing around in pregame? Then he cries to the media about how he's being treated. Lots of red flags there. But the Cubs are desperate for talent, and if they can claim him off waivers and give up next to nothing, I think they really should.

the Blue Jays designated Hillenbrand for assignment on Wednesday. Toronto has 10 days to either trade or release their former designated hitter.

-------------

The limited time frame that Toronto has to possibly deal Hillenbrand will most likely negatively affect what the Blue Jays could receive for him. That was something that Ricciardi wasn't concerned about, considering the situation.

I think they put him on waivers, with the chance to pull him off if the team that chooses him doesn't offer a reasonable trade. However, it also seems like they are willing to pretty much give him away, so the Cubs could be in a position where they can claim him, offer Toronto next to nothing (or who knows, maybe they want Rusch (or Nevin) for the stretch run) and then control him for the rest of the year.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if a team "pulls back" a player, said player must remain on the ML team for the remainder of the season and can't be traded?!?! I believe that's the way it works, but I'm not sure.

He was DFA'ed by Toronto after blasting the management and skipper. He has been "missused" and no one had congradulated him on the second adoption by he and his wife. Basicly the bad blood he created by whineing to the media isnt his fault.

Read for yourself.

Just heard on sporting news radio that Milwaukee might be the favorite to land hillenbrand.

Ha! He was taking cell phone calls during the game. And he is the one talking about professionalism.

WGN showed Dempster on the phone during a game a few days ago.

Was he at Wrigley on one of the new dugout phones?

I doubt it. He pulled a Ozzie Guillen either shortly before he was dealt, or after he dealt. What I mean he pulled a "Ozzie Guillen" in that he used a homosexual slur when talking about a fellow player, I believe it was. I want to say he may the comment before the trade, which set him up to leave Boston. So, I doubt Boston will be interested in bringin' the punk back to Boston.

It was at Wrigley and if the dugout phones look like cell phones then I guess it could have been. IIRC either Len or Bob said something about it as well. Not anything negative, just mentioning it.

TORONTO (AP) - After Shea Hillenbrand wrote on the clubhouse bulletin board that the "ship was sinking," Toronto Blue Jays manager John Gibbons challenged him to a fight.

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/5800306?FSO1&ATT=HMA

Gibbons acknowledged he challenged Hillenbrand to a fight.

"He had a chance yesterday to defend himself in front of his coaches and his teammates. He chose not to," Gibbons said.

Gibbons said someone was done in Toronto - him or Hillenbrand.

Gibbons sounds crazy.

Hmm...maybe it was one of those then. I'm pretty sure I remember Len and Bob saying "cell phone" but I definitely could be wrong.

I don't blame him.

Earlier that day Hillenbrand wrote on the bulletin board (that's used to post BP times) "Play for yourself." Then later he comes out and writes "the ship is sinking". This is all after whining about not being patted on the back enough after taking 4 days off for an adoption.

After whining about it to the media, he passively instigated things with the entire staff, but then when he was called out on it he called up a reporter and arranged his own press conference to whine about being Gibbons being "very unprofessional." What a clown.

This is the same guy who demanded he be traded out of Boston and called Theo a "faggot" on a radio show.
