TORONTO (AP) - After Shea Hillenbrand wrote on the clubhouse bulletin board that the "ship was sinking," Toronto Blue Jays manager John Gibbons challenged him to a fight.

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/5800306?FSO1&ATT=HMA

Gibbons acknowledged he challenged Hillenbrand to a fight.

"He had a chance yesterday to defend himself in front of his coaches and his teammates. He chose not to," Gibbons said.

Gibbons said someone was done in Toronto - him or Hillenbrand.

Gibbons sounds crazy.

I don't blame him.

Earlier that day Hillenbrand wrote on the bulletin board (that's used to post BP times) "Play for yourself." Then later he comes out and writes "the ship is sinking". This is all after whining about not being patted on the back enough after taking 4 days off for an adoption.

After whining about it to the media, he passively instigated things with the entire staff, but then when he was called out on it he called up a reporter and arranged his own press conference to whine about being Gibbons being "very unprofessional." What a clown.

This is the same guy who demanded he be traded out of Boston and called Theo a "faggot" on a radio show.

I'm thinking about challenging Shea to a fight.

I think he also drew a picture of a stegosauraus eating Gibbons' head.

Ok, so he didn't....but see today's dugout.

Wasn't Diamond Dallas Page also doing something in one of the drawings?

Yes. ROTFLOL

lot's of additional facts are coming out about the circumstances. I am not defending Hillenbrand, but it turns out it was not just and adoption, it was complications in pregnancy by a surrogate mother, follwed by difficulty with the adoption. it really does sound like a rather traumatic life event.

also, it sounds as if this has been festering for a long time and Riccardi has done nothing but fuel the fire. Shea sounds like a tool, but it seems this was handled in Cub like fashion by Toronto's management.

I'm sorry, a manager challenging one of his players to a fight is just insane. The story I read is that Hillenbrand's "sinking ship" and "play for yourselves" were jokes as Toronto players throughout the season have put jokes on the board only to have them quickly erased. We have a thread right now talking about Maddux's sense of humor with the thanks for all the help on his 200th loss, this seems similar. Hillenbrand is likely in the wrong, but Gibbons definitely is. And Ricciardi isn't helping himself by slamming a guy he's trying to trade in the media.

From what I've found the Giants get Hillenbrand and RHP Vinnie Chulk for RHP Jeremy Accardo.

Accardo is 1-3 4.91 ERA in 38 games for the Giants. He has 3 S/ 6 SVO. He actually went to Illinois State and made his MLB debute in May 2005.

Chulk is 1-0 5.25 ERA in 20 games w/ Toronto.

Neither seem like great pitchers.
