According to Buster Olney and Jayson Stark the White Sox and Giants are supposedly working on a deal for Jason Schmidt. The Sox would send McCarthy and Anderson for Schmidt, and then in a separate deal acquire a CF. This deal is so lopsided in favor of the Giants it's ridiculous. 5 years of McCarthy and 6 of Anderson for 3 months of Schmidt is not worth it.

Also, what makes Anderson more appealing to the Giants than Fred Lewis? I wouldn't mind Broadway/Fields for Schmidt, but giving up McCarthy would be ridiculous.

Any thoughts? I know most of you covet Schmidt for next season, so it's an interesting topic.

Wonder if they are then trading Garcia, Vazquez or Garland to the Phillies to get Rowand back.

With a goal of winning back to back World Series titles, this would make the White Sox extremely tough in the second half and almost unbeatable in the playoffs with the amount of pitching they have. They are trading a piece of the future (who by the way you don't know for sure how McCarthy will perform) for a known quantity that may just give you that extra little bit you need to put you over the top. I don't think it would be a bad deal at all.

I can't see Garcia going since he's one of Ozzie's favorites. And Garland just signed a three-year deal and has been pitching pretty poorly this season. Vazquez is an interesting option, but I could have sworn he signed a deal with the Sox this season too.

Overall, I don't see why the Sox would trade for another starter when it's their bullpen that needs the arms.

I can't see Rowand coming back. I would have no problem with Fred Lewis, he could be adequate. If they're dealing Garcia to the Phils, I'd want Victorino. If Sabean doesn't pull the trigger, he's so terrible.

If the White Sox make this deal and it pays off with another World Series appearance, why would Schmidt want to leave? I would think the Sox would have the upperhand in re-signing Schmidt if they look like a top 5 team for the first several years of the contract with WS potential.

Sometimes that thinking doesn't pay off, but other times it does, and I think a guy like Kenny Williams would take that gamble.

The most exciting part of this rumor is that the White Sox a) might become interested in Juan Pierre, and b) are not reluctant to pay for rentals with top-end prospects.

I hate to say this, but I see Jason Schmidt going to the Mets. Sabean has a recent history of STUPID trades (AJP for Nathan/Bonser/Liriano, Williams/Aardsma for Hawkins, and Hawkins for Kline), and I could see Sabean trading Schmidt for Bannister (or Heilman) and Fernando Martinez, BASED on his recent history. I am saying based on Sabean's RECENT history, not what the Giants. My guess is...Sabean will NOT get enough for Schmidt, if he trades.

Well in that case, let's trade Pierre and Rusch for Schmidt, and get a foot in the door to signing him this offseason!

If I were the Giants and there was not a good chance of re-signing Schimdt then I would do this deal in a heart beat.

That thought crossed my mind too, but I'm still having trouble seeing a team only 3.5 games back in their division and only 1.5 games back in the wild card trading their ace.

If I'm Brian Sabean trying to work Schmidt out to an extension and I get this call from Kenny Williams, then I call up Jason and say "Hey buddy change of plans, you're going to Chicago". You can always bury Anderson on the bench or trade him for spare parts, but if you can get a prospect like McCarthy from a guy as close to the end as Schmidt you do it last week.

I don't know what to make of Schmidt. The guy spent his first several years being mediocre with occasional averageness mixed in, then he had one fantastic year, followed by a much less impressive, but still solid season, then it's back to mediocre-ville. Health has always been a question with the guy, and overuse has been an issue. You can't call him a workhorse because of how much time he's missed, but I wouldn't be surprised if he put together a 240 IP dominant season before he retires. He might do it this year. I wouldn't know what to do with him as a GM.

Do you think he's so close to the end that you don't offer him a 3 year extension?

The Giants are certainly not going to be hurting for money this offseason considering Bonds, Alou, Durham and Finley are free agents (along with Schmidt).

Not if you think you can win this year. Schmidt is proven. McCarthy is a top prospect, but top prospects have been known to fail. And even if he does develop as expected, there's no reasonable assurance that he'd do as much as Schmidt would to help them win this year.

Like you said, no way the Giants trade their ace when they are this close to the playoffs. Anybody could win the NL West and I would guess that the Giants would be more likely to make a trade to bring somebody in to help the team than to get rid of Schmidt. The only exception is if they go on a big losing streak to start the second half and are 10+ games out of a playoff spot by the end of July. Otherwise Schmidt will stay a Giant.

You are never going to get enough in return if you trade somebody who will be a Free Agent at the end of the year. If Schmidt had another year left on the contract, then you could get more in return. But nobody is going to overpay to rent somebody for three months. If an extension is reached, that would change everything.

How about giving up Bagwell for a couple of months for Larry Anderson?

Good point about this year since no one is out in the NL West. I would have to give McCarthy a long look though, as anyone who made starts for a WS champion then returned the next season as a guy who would've been in just about any other team's rotation would have as good a chance as any of succeeding.
