I wonder if those Red Sox fans still post here. Jimy Williams' name always did a good job of sending my Red Sox fan friends into spastic fits of rage.

He wouldn't be much of a step up from Dusty when it comes to things like bullpen management, bringing along young players, and utilizing the players at his disposal effectively. He seems like a nice enough guy, but he would not be a good choice for managing this team.

I don't think he is a good choice to manage in the NL as he would be in the AL. I prefer Hendry to go in another direction but I really think he's going to go to the gruffy in your face type manager after Dusty's country club atmosphere. Also, Guillen is a flamboyant type in your face guy so since they won the Series in 2005 Hendry will probably want a type like that. Piniella would be the perfect choice if that's the criteria. Get ready for top picks in 2007 and 2008.

Does he favor unproductive veterens over young players?

Does he value walks and OBP?

Does he "have" to play veterens in September when his team is out to maintian the integrity of playoff races?

These are serious questions I'm asking BTW

Weren't Astros fans always freaking out about him being the anti-dusty and pulling starters way too early?

That's EXACTLY what it was. He wouldn't let the starters in there to try and get out of their own jams, and it also was taxing the bullpen because of this. Pulling pitchers after the 5th inning and what not.

From baseballcrank.com:

And his record in Toronto was very much the same; after the Jays’ disastrous collapse in the 1987 pennant race, Bill James argued that Williams’ inability to settle on a second baseman had doomed the Jays, because the constantly auditioning infielders (with a washed-up Garth Iorg in the Mike Lansing role) had collectively performed far worse than any one of them could have individually.

That sounds a bit too familiar for my taste.

I've got a feeling that when I head to Wrigley for a game in early August, I'll be rooting for Lou Piniella's Chicago Cubs.

I don't know why I feel that, or how it makes me feel . . . not too good, I think.

I'm not sure it can get worse.

If Hendry's next hire is a failure, he could easily be gone after next year, and that, in and of itself, would be a positive. His 2 year extension only goes through 2008, and if he has 3 miserable years in a row, the Cubs probably won't give him a chance for number 4.

So, give Hendry a chance to hire somebody other than Baker, and see if they can win next year. Or else he's gone.

I think Hendry only has next year to turn it around whether he hires a new manager or gives Baker an extension. Either way, I think he has one year for the reason you stated of having three bad years in a row.

Some of you guys will complain no matter who Hendry chooses. Sometimes I feel like I'm talking to my ex wife on here. Name three managers you guys could live with. I bet you guys can't do it...

You're right I'm sure we all could not agree on whoever Hendry picks. IMO the fans on this board will disagree about all of the transactions made by this team. It's up to Hendry to pick the right guy and give him some players and it's up to us to speak our opinion on the subject. Will the masses be right? Maybe. Will Hendry be right? Maybe. I like reading what choices posters here put up and it increases my knowledge of the subject. Yes I know that some will complain but if the Cubs are winning I'm sure the chemistry on the board will be just fine!

Disclaimer...please don't play 650 ball from here on Cubbies because we might as well get a top 5 pick and go into 2007 strong!

If the Cubs play .650 ball the rest of the way the Earth will be sucked into itself and vaporize.

My 3 choices would be:

Girardi

Gonzalez

Shines

My first choice would be Girardi. I like what he's done in Florida this year. The fish would no doubt want some compensation though to let him go to Chicago.

I think Girardi is untouchable and you're right he would cost some compensation and once again Hendry is a day late and a dollar short. I like your other two choices too. I give Rogers credit because I didn't know about Shines at all but I'd like to learn more about him. I just see a retread emotional tough guy being the Cubs manager in 2007.

I didn't know much about Shines either but I like what I read. Of course Hendry probably doesn't know about him either.

I see the same retread manager type also if Dusty is fired...which I don't think he will be.

I can't name three names. I'd be very happy with Girardi or Razor Shines, but I never heard of Shines before this week. I'd be happy with any manager with a winning track record and an emphasis on OBP as far as the offense is concerned. I'm less concerned about requiring MLB-level experience.

why does it matter who manages?

we have an aging outfield that won't hit 50 hrs, will hit around .250 as a unit and have an obp of barelt .300

our powr corner guys aram and lee will not hit 60 combined and look to hit just short of .300- not terrible but hendry needs them to hit 80hr and be well over .300 with at least 200 rbi i'm sure he was hoing for 230-240 with pierre at the top

we have one starting pitcher in z, we have a rook that looks good in marshall but is still only going to win 10-12 games, prior is continuing to be awful, maddux is a #5 but on this staff is a 2. the rest of the young guys shoe promise but are a ways away. we can not compete with a staff that can only compete 1.5 times out of every 5 starts.

we have the worst offense in baseball, in every catagory

we have a poor staff...but the bullpen is better!

let's just have the players fill out the lineup.

Williams won praise for using his entire roster and his manage-from-the-gut style.

The complaints generally related to Williams' tendency to shuffle lineups without offering any explanations to the players.

Williams reportedly refers to himself as "Peanut Head".

---------------

No mentions of his imaginary friend Mr. Weebles or his tendency to answer any questions about strategy as "manager's decision."

YES!! I was waiting for someone to bring up Mr. Weebles. For those of you familliar with the Sports Guy, Bill Simmons, he had an ongoing joke when Jimy was the Red Sox manager...that Jimy had a little man named Mr. Weebles who lived in his mouth and told him to make inexplicable managerial decisions. And this is a top candidate to replace Dusty. In the words of the Sports Guy, "I will now light myself on fire."

So...wait...are we talking about Dusty or Jimy?

Will Jimy at least be professional enough to not end or being every sentence with "man" or "dude?"

Razor Shines will be on BP Radio this week. (Usually available by Saturday AM).

"What’s on this week’s BP Radio, you ask? The Cubs might be looking to replace Dusty Baker. We’ll talk with one of the men who could replace him: Razor Shines, currently the manager of the Triple-A Charlotte Knights. We’ll also check on All-Star preparations with the Pirates staff, and look back at SABR’s recent convention with BP’s Maury Brown."
