I've been keeping an eye on his numbers everyday for a few weeks now, and this kid is absolutely amazing. He's sitting at .388 as of right now with a sick OBP and overall OPS from a catcher.

Would anyone trade him straight up for Prior at this point? (NOTE I AM NOT ADVOCATING TRADING MARK PRIOR, BUT AS OF RIGHT NOW, THE TWINS 'CHEAP' DECISION IS TURNING OUT WELL FOR THEM AS THEY HAVE ONE OF THE BEST HITTERS IN BASEBALL.)

Disclaimer was necessary.

I'd give them Barrett too, and I like Barrett.

A lot of Twins fans take exception to the fact that they took Mauer as a way of saving money or gauranteeing signability. I got lambaster by a barage of Twins fans on Twins.com(this was before I realized there were good baseball websites outside of the MLB ones) for bringing that up.

They argued that they wanted Mauer from the get go and that Twins management would have been chastised for passing on Mauer, local kid.

I thought I would throw this in here because it came quickly to mind when I read your post.

Well if they draft Prior, they never trade AJ and they don't have Liriano OR Nathon.

Good point...I think I would MUCH rather have Liriano, Nathan, Mauer, and Bonser than A.J. and Prior. Hell, I'd rather have just Liriano or just Mauer than Prior.

One Twin fan in particular has made a point to yap at me constantly about how Prior refused to pitch for the Twins...despite having no evidence whatsoever to back it up beyond hearsay. He's the only Twin fan I know who's said this, despite knowing a number of guys who have never heard anything about it. He's been quite thrilled about Prior's injury problems.

He's also a Jock Jones fan. I'll just leave it at that.

I think I know who you're talking about.

You know what guys, I still take a HEALTHY Prior, Michael Barrett and a developing Mark Reed (.312/.367 OBP last time I look, his slugging isn't there, yet, but only time) over Joe Mauer.

Joe is going to be great, but, I'd still take young pitching like Prior, over young hitting, anyday, with the exception perhaps of Miguel Cabrera, or David Wright. Even then, I'd still have to think long and hard.

Besides, Joe Mauer would had gone to FSU, if he wasn't selected by the Twins, so I seriously doubt Mauer would be even in the ML with any other teams, considering he was ultra talented in football.

I'm lovin what this guy is doing. I picked him up in the 6th-7th round in my fantasy draft, and got some heat from some pretty dumb Royals/Dodgers fan friend of mine. He then told me when he was hitting .322 in late April that he was "just hot" and he's a "bad player on a bad team." I'm in serious need of crow to shove down his throat.

Also, Liriano, Mauer and Santana could be a great nucleus to build the Twins back up to division winning standards. If they don't overpay to bring back Hunter, they'll be in great shape.

they have a ton more great young pitchers too. they have great young starting pitching, they just need some offense. they really need to get Kubel up and starting.

You clearly need to get acquainted with Jake Fox. :D

He's a catcher and he plays on artifical turf. I doubt he'll be able to do it as the season goes on. It'll be too much his body.

I think he's DH'ing a good amount when he's not catching, so its pretty inevitable that he hits a cold spot due to fatigue/wear. Right now, he's in the midst of his best streak ever and got his avg up near .400. The days of the .400 are really gone, but Mauer will definitely make a run at the batting title.

Ichiro is hitting .367 and in his last 125 at bats he is hitting .464.

Of course, Mauer is hitting .474 in his last 100 or so at bats.

No. There is a reason nobody has done it since 1941.

Everybody was talking about DLee hitting .400 and winning the Triple Crown last year and he didn't come close to getting either of those.

Mauer won't hit .400

But the Twins are a great organization for bringing up solid hitting minor leaguers. They get the most out of their system.
