BA's 170th ranked prospect in the draft.

Ugh.

WOW.

And a Left fielder no less.

I really wanted to be happy with this pick. I hope he develops.

I've never been disappointed in a draft since Hendry has been involved with the Cubs, until now. Why? He's a .280 career college player with a average arm for the outfield? I don't get this one at all...Terrible.

170. Tyler Colvin, of

School: Clemson. Class: Jr.

Hometown: North Augusta, S.C..

B-T: L-L. Ht.: 6-3. Wt.: 190. Birthdate: 9/5/85.

Scouting Report: Colvin was the hottest hitter coming down the stretch for one of college baseball's hottest teams. It's redemption for a player who finished 2005 in a 4-for-39 slump. Colvin took a 15-game hitting streak into the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament, as his tools start turning into production. Colvin's timing couldn't be better, as scouts are looking for any college hitters who have tools and are performing. Colvin doesn't have a tool that stands out, but as he has gained strength he has been able to repeat his smooth lefthanded swing more readily, and he's added power to be average in that department. He's an above-average runner and an efficient basestealer who plays a solid left field. Colvin's arm is average. While he doesn't stand out, he has shown fewer and fewer weaknesses this spring, and some scouts estimated he would go in the first three rounds.

Can you say "reach" ?

I expect a bit more upside for the #13 overall pick -- especially when its your only pick until round 5.....

Anyone else feel like all the other GM's are laughing their heads off right now with our 13th pick? Only the Cobs would pick someone who was ranked 170th by BA with the 13th pick.

From the BA Draft Day Blog:

First Round Surprise

1:24 p.m.: In the biggest shock of the first half of the first round, the Cubs took a chance on the pro body of Tyler Colvin, the Clemson outfielder Baseball America ranked 170 on the Top 200 prospects. Colvin's stock had surged as Clemson won 21 of its last 22 games and stormed into super-regionals. Colvin, physical at 6-foot-3, 190 pounds, had been rumored to go as high as 29 to the White Sox, but instead the crosstown Cubs took him. Colvin was having a career year and finally showing power as a junior. He hit below .290 his first two seasons, then hit .359-12-65 with a .622 slugging percentage in 2006. He also was 23-for-27 on stolen bases this season.

I'm not the only one who gets the reek of "below slot pre-draft deal" with this guy, am I? :(

He's a Cub now and I hope he breaks every record in the books. But still...yeesh.

Wow! One pick in the first umpteen rounds, and they pick a guy they could probably land with their next pick?

Unbelievable.

The strength with this scouting team has always seemed to be on the pitching side. Why screw that up now too?

Well, he's a junior, not a senior. But still.

2004: .289/.350/.414, 2 HRs in 128 ABs

2005: .287/.327/.449, 5 HRs in 254 ABs

Ok...what the heck?

I don't know -- looks like the Cubs are satisfied with a guy who may be a future 4th outfielder. Seems like setting the bar low to me.
