Jacque Jones a potential allstar?

Every team has to have one rep., and the way I see it, it's either Jones, Barrett or Walker for us. I think each have an equal shot, positions taken into account. Jones has really stood up and gotten the job done.

Given the usual shortage of quality catcher candidates I think that if the selections were to be made today Barrett would get picked. IMO there is just way too much competition and talent among OF for Jones to make it.

There are 12 outfielders with an OPS over 900. Jones doesn't have any previous name recognition or other special abilities(baserunning, defense) to set him apart. He'd need to channel the June our RF had in 1998 to make the All-Star team.

Every team has to have a guy. Every year better qualified outfielders are left off because of that rule.

Zambrano, Barrett, and Dempster are all more likely to be in. I heard that Barrett was the leading vote getter at catcher. We won't be hurting to get someone in that they'll pick Jones and shaft half a dozen outfielders.

I don't see Barrett making the team unless he leads in votes because there are quite a few catchers having as good or better years than him....and that's without his suspension factored in.

What catchers are those? McCann and Miller are the only ones with a higher OPS, and they don't have enough ABs to qualify(only 4 catchers have, Barrett leads them by about 90 points in OPS). There's no way that Barrett isn't in right now, and it's more likely that McCann and especially Miller level off than Barrett.

Yeah but Barrett punched one of the most despised guys in the majors.

McCann and Miller have a better OPS. Estrada has 33 RBI. Piazza is close numbers wise and has the name, which is very huge. If Ross or Bard get more ABs and come anywhere close to maintainnig their numbers, they are locks, but they are wildcards for now. I certainly don't see Bard getting the ABs with Piazza there, but with the DH, who knows.

If the fans don't elect him, the players will, as EVERYBODY HATES AJ WHATEVER!

The general managers on NSB.com gave up on Jones way too soon. The lack of patience here is disturbing but explains why many are posting on message boards and really not in baseball.
It's hard to fault the posters. Jones had two poor seasons in a row in Minnesota as well as starting slow this year. It was justified for people to think he was through as a productive major leaguer. It's good that he's proving people wrong (at least for the time being), but you can't really blame people for writing him off. If he had good seasons the last couple of years, then maybe giving up on him after a slow start this year would have been impatient.

I'm one of those "who gave up on Jones", but we'll see in September.

I think it's just as unlikely that he will perform at May level for an entire season as it was that he'd perform at April level for an entire season. I still don't like the deal, as it seems unlikely he'd produce at this peak rate for the next three years and justify the deal he got. But I'll be rooting for him nonetheless.

sounds like you are rooting against him.

Doesn't sound like that to me. Sounds like he's suggesting it's too early for people to be saying, "I told you so." Especially when Jones has had two full poor seasons before this one.

BTW, I sure wish Jones were more "patient" himself.

.339 OBP... Out of our everyday RF (who is probably overachieving at the moment)... Count me as "not all that impressed."

It's not Jacque's fault, though. It's Hendry's.

Considering the fact that we're probably stuck with him for 3 years, "Go Jacque!"

As for the All Star team, I think Barrett and Zambrano are much more likely. With Pujols out for 6 weeks now, even Lee might be more likely (depending on when he gets back and how he does).

Nothing like a "told you so" post.

We'll see what his #'s look like in October. I think everyone here would be thrilled if he hit .300 and hit for power for the length of a season. However, the odds on that happening are long.

I don't think he was saying "I told you so"; I think he was opining that the majority of the bd. is wrong about Jones. As I am part of that majority, I: a) hope he's right; b) hope I was wrong; and c) am not offended by what he wrote.

I'm not offended either, but I also feel that his point could have been made without the last sentence.
