From today's LA Times:

General Manager Ned Colletti is expected to explore acquiring a veteran starter by the July 31 trading deadline. Greg Maddux is a possibility, although the Dodgers passed up an opportunity this week to acquire a different player from the Chicago Cubs.

Anyone have an idea who the "different player" might be?

No indication of who the Cubs might be seeking. The Dodgers do have a deep farm system fwiw.

I'd guess they were trying for Hairston; the Cubs asked for Alomar Jr in return. LA thought we were being sarcastic so they blew us off...little did they know we were serious.

In the rest of the article they talk about the Dodgers being interested in Hairston because they were looking for a utility player that could play both the infield and outfield.

Maybe if Ned wouldn't be such a pee hole in the offseason we'd do business with him.

This statement sullies the good name of pee holes everywhere.

I'm guessing a lineup with Lofton, Furcal and Pierre would be overkill

Thanks, and apologies. Got the quote from a 3rd party web site and in my haste did not check the full article.

If the Cubs do trade Maddux (which is unlikely, right now) it wouldn't surprise me if they'd trade him to San Francisco or San Diego, just to screw over Colleti.

Maddux has a NTC, he has said before there is no way, no how he will go to the AL for any amt of $$. Can't say I blame him. Arizona and the three NL California teams are the only ones Maddux would conceivably consider in a trade, along with (I'm guessing) a return to the ATL.

Mddux for Joel Guzman plz.

Remember the Cubs have a handshake agreement not to trade Maddux. And Hendry is pretty good at honoring these "handshake agreements." (remember Rod Beck) My guess is....the Cubs would talk to Maddux about a trade to a west coast team (if/when the Cubs fall out of contention) and if Maddux agree, then you might see things heat up.

With that said, I would love to Guzman, but it wouldn't surprise me if the Cubs land either Matt Kemp, Dionar Navarro, or Andre Either(<----I really like this kid) for Maddux.

Well, hopefully this trade deadline will be similar to this offseason and teams buying will have to overpay for players. Hopefully we can make a killing by selling.

How about Maddux to Detroit? I heard Maroth is out for up to three months.

Anyone familiar with their prospects?

#1. I doubt Maddux would go to an AL team.

#2. I doubt Maddux would allow a trade anywhere outside of SoCal.

#3. Detroit is loaded with young pitching.
