Let's do the Jack McKeon (sp) thing and get the Zim man back. Hendry wants to live the Houston story over but why not the old almost out of baseball Florida come back? Florida, unlike Houston actually came back and won the Series.

Not that it would ever happen, but there is absolutely no reason for him to leave his position with the DRays and their good young talent.

Florida also made a big roster move too namely Cabrera, so McKeon wasn't the only reason why they won the World Series.

Regarding Zim, it was career years for Jerome Walton and Dwight Smith that helped win in '89, problem was they had career years as rookies. I still don't know why people would think that a managerial change alone would do the trick. Hendry's philosophy didn't just get created with Baker's arrival. If Hendry did fire Baker (no way) he'd just hire another Dusty Baker type guy, only he wouldn't be named Dusty Baker.

Wasn't Zimmer a terrible manager?

If you want fun and nostalgia then I'm all for Zim. If you want wins then I'm against hiring Zim. The '89 season made him look better than what he was -- and if it weren't for career years by Walton and Smith, we wouldn't have won the division. If you want to bring back somebody it should be Dallas Green as GM. If the stupid Trib (I think it was Stanton Cook) wouldn't have given him the ultimatum of being field manager or leaving, we would've at least made one WS (maybe more) appearance -- definitely more postseason appearances than what we did. He's still the best Cub GM in my lifetime. He got productive players and still was able to produce top talent in the minors.

And Sutcliffe had a career year in 84. It often takes players having career years for the Cubs to win. Let me also add Zim also let the rookies play. I have no problem with Green as a GM either.

If we're just gonna hire another terrible manager after Baker, then I'd rather go for Nostalgia + Suck rather than Suck all by itself.

Sorry...I'm all about the pessimism these days. :P

I think its great there is a thread asking about the Gerbil's availability..ha

Then when we play the Mets we get to watch replays of when Pedro threw done the Gerbil in Boston a few years ago.

That video never gets old......a true classic.

Cuse, he let the kids play because the GM, Jim Frey, gave him no options but to play kids, something Hendry has just started doing. Dallas Green left Frey with a good core group of young guys. Remember, Smith only played because Palmeiro, another young guy, was traded away.

Let me go on record as saying that I love Zim. That said, 89' was a flukey thing. Walton and Smith played a station above what they really were, Mike Bilecki might have had the luckiest year of any pitcher in franchise history, Wild Thing dodged about 50 landmines, and they played very aggressively on the basepaths but were fortunate enough not to run themselves out of innings. Dawson had a very down year, and Vance Law was Neifi-like at 3B. It was a lucky year.

That said, if we stink anyway, bring Popeye back.

Don't forget the acquisition of Luis Salazar. He came in and hit over .300 and delivered some huge hits. So naturally, the Cubs brought him back where he predictably regressed to his career norms. I don't think there was ever a pitch that Luis didn't want to swing at. But, boy, he sure was versatile!

'89 was a fun year and it seemed like every crazy thing that Zimmer tried worked, but trust me, his act got old in a hurry.

Ah, Luis Salazar....he loved the head-high pitch! But he'd nail it!

Can someone honestly tell me they wouldn't want to see Pedro step in to the box with Z or Kerry on the mound with Zim as the Cubs' manager?

Suspensions all around!

Or as Harry used to call him, Siul Razalas. One of my all time Harry backward names. On a side note, Zimmer was not a very good manager, I couldn't believe some of the stuff he did that worked in '89.

Zimmer for manager!

Awesome !!

The Gerbil actually is executing a pretty decent landing in the bottom photo. He nailed it !!

If we're bringing back old managers, re-hire Riggleman. He did a lot with less in regards to the 1998 team.

While I do think part of the problem is Baker, we need an upper management change as well.
