I've been a big Michael Barrett fan since he first got here, and I'm an even bigger fan after what he did today.

What's up with Mabry? I haven't heard anything about his situation. Did he just randomly start puching people, or what?

I didn't see it, but apparently Anderson went to town on him, and he fought back in true Tavarez style.

Barrett is a jerk and has an IQ of about 50. He's been doing stupid crap since we got him, I honestly DO think he's just not very smart. I don't like him, I don't like his game, I don't like his bonehead mistakes. When the new Cubs GM is ready to trade him, I won't complain.

He's not very smart because his team has been sucking, showing no life, his team is getting the crapped kicked out of them by the in city rival and he gets barrelled over and knocks the crap out of the person that barrelled him over? So Barretts a jerk, but AJ's not for slapping the plate like an idiot? I think it was great, Barretts the only one on this team that gives a crap. I've been in a few fights in my life so does that make me a jerk, Iq of about 50? What did you want him to do? If he just took it and didn't act like anything was the matter, people would be jumping on him cause he didnt' show any fire.. I don't get it..

1. The rundown play.

2. The run-in with Oswalt.

3. The fight with AJP.

4. The incredibly dumb called pitches.

5. The impatience at the plate.

6. The quotes in the press.

The guy is a dim-witted moron. So he hits 270 every year, big deal. He still sucks, and he is not a long-term solution, contract notwithstanding.

Two things:

- Don't forget the Dave Roberts "you're not allowed to steal on me" incident.

- How is slapping the plate any different then standing and watching home runs leave the park or giving an emphatic bat flip, ala Jaque Jones and good 'ol Sammy?

You can't have it both ways and you can't choose when to call a play dirty or non-dirty depending on your mood. That's what irks me guys.

I thought Tavarez karate kicked a guy who charged the mound on him back when he was playing for the Cubs. Am I thinking of someone else?

I'm sure you will be happy with Blanco catching every day next year, or a catcher that doesn't have a 800+ OPS.

Barret is the best hitting catcher in the NL, and were complaining? He is one of the few bright spots on the team right now.

Im not sure what that has to do with Barrett socking AJ.

What Barrett did today, while entertaining just to see a Cubs player with a pulse, was embarassing and stupid. If he wants revenge, then get it on the field -- call an excellent game, make the big play, get the big hit, etc. A Cubs win hurts the Sox a lot more than a slap in the face of AJP. Barrett's reaction was just another nail in the coffin that is becoming this season. Edited by katway

Barrett took exception to getting bowled over while standing on home plate? Face it, he's never blocked the plate in his life and had no idea that could happen to him.

I know this is a Cubs board and everyone is pro Cubs but come on...it was good hardnosed baseball by AJ and had it been turned around and Barrett did the same thing to AJ at the plate everyone here would be cheering the great play by Barrett. Unless AJ has eyes in the back of his head there is no way he knew exactly where the ball was, the catcher was blocking the plate and AJ plowed him over. Good play.

I still have visions in my head of Barrett standing up while Roy Oswalt was standing in the batters box and Barrett, with shin guards and a chest protector and a catchers mask on, wants to talk a little smack to little skinny Roy Oswalt. Pathetic.

Looked to me like he went in to try to stop the fight from getting out of hand, he had the "break it up" signal going with his hands and Brian Andersen sucker punched him. He had absolutely no right to do that.

Apparently Mabry was unavailable for comment after the game because he was at the emergency room getting x-rays done on his ribs.

Awesome.

Should he have taken off his gear first?

I think Barrett was out of line today so I wont disagree with you on that point, but the way that reads makes it seem as if Barrett only did that cuz he was protected by the gear, which is a ridiculous assumption IMO.

He didn't take exception to that.

And if you take your mask off, that's when something can get out of hand. If you just keep your mask on and say what you want to say, it doesn't have to escalate.

How long does it take MLB to give suspensions? And can Barrett appeal? If Lee is returning June 10th (or so he says)... Maybe it wont be such an offensive loss

Huh? So what did he take exception to?

No, you leave your mask on to keep someone from punching your lights out.

According to him, the bumping afterwards.

Do you actually think Oswalt was going to throw a punch so he could get ejected and risk hurting his hand?

Are you watching the same team that I am? The Cubs need Lee ANDBarrett and about 3 more bats to be mediocre.

So far, every single person I've heard comment on this incident, including Dusty and Barrett himself, have deemed the hit clean. I can't figure out what it is about this play that some of you don't get.

He was blocking the plate. If he didn't think he had a chance to catch the ball and get AJ out, he could have easily stepped up and gotten out of the way.

You block the plate, you get hit. Pretty simple.

And if you flick someone off you get punched in the face. This is what happens sometimes.

The middle finger in all of this is the slap and walk towards cubs dugout/helmet (that may have been misunderstood by Barrett)

No, I don't think he would ever do something that stupid...but Barrett obviously must have thought it.

Jesus... That's not what I meant. Lee returning would give the team a huge motivational boost. That means there will be more mediocre (or better) bats... And it would probably be the best time for Barrett to serve his suspension without the offense going down a whole lot than it already has. Do you have a better optimistic plan?

Whats with this hatred of Mabry? I hate him more than EVERYONE ELSE believe me, but he actually took Anderson to town from what I saw.

Anderson gave a weak swing, Mabry ducked under it and drove him to the ground. Then they got covered with players, so I couldn't tell.

How could you have possibly inferred from my posts that I hate Mabry?

From what I saw, Anderson was just running through there, throwing haymakers like a bat out of hell. I didn't see Mabry throw anything. AJP and Mabry shouldn't be suspended or fined, Barrett should get about 10 games, and Anderson about 6-8, if you ask me.

I wasn't a fan of the fight but 10 games seems a tad harsh for hitting an opposing player with a glancing blow. I think he'll get 5 games and then get it reduced to 3 in the appeal.
