If we lose 2/3 (I can't cheer against Woody) and get swept by the White Sox, is that enough to get Baker ridden out of town? I don't see how he could still have a job if we lose all 3 to the other side of town. I'm grasping for straws here.

I think the Cubs could tank the rest of the year and Hendry wouldn't fire Baker.

His stubborn insistence that Dusty's job is secure is beyond baffling or beyond reason. After seeing Hendry's comments from the interview in the Trib this morning, I can only conclude that Hendry is delusionally insane. The man's head is in the sand.

I hope so, but I can't see it happening. To the general public this team is dealing with injuries, not injuries and poor player selection and bad management. Can't see Hendry making the move this soon.

Just going by Hendry's reported comments on WGN radio, I think Baker will be around at least until the ASB. I believe Hendry said something about giving him a chance to work his way out of it, or something like that. Anyway, using the old faithful injury excuse, the Cubs haven't been able to put their best team on the field. So when Lee, Wood, Prior, and Miller get back I think Hendry will give Baker some time to turn things around.

As far as I'm concerned this is a win/win situation for the fans. If they don't play better Bakers will likely be fired. If they do play better maybe they can get back into the playoff picture.

However, my worst fear is if they play better and get three or four games above .500 by the end of the season. Then all the sportswriters will be lauding Baker and he will likely be back, if he wants.

I don't see how this is a win/win situation for the fans. If they go 67-58 the rest of the way, they will finish 82-80, likely no where near playoff contention. That "successful" end to the season will more than likely mean more Baker, which is a bad thing for the Cubs. That "maybe" hope is not win/win. They have to go 75-60 just to get to 90 wins. That's a .600 winning percentage, which is a 97 win season in a full schedule. Nobody can say this team has a chance to be that good. If they play .500 ball from now through June 15, assuming Wood, Prior, Lee and Miller are back by then, they will be 29-36. At that point they'd need to play .629 ball to get to 90 wins.

There is no win/win situation for the Cubs right now. They either keep tanking and Dusty is gone (lose/win), keep tanking and Dusty stays (lose/lose), stabilize and Dusty stays (lose/lose), or go on a hot streak and Dusty stays (win/lose).

Personally I'm going to root for the Cubs to win all 6 games just mentioned. My main concern isn't Baker's coaching status, it's Cubs victories.

How about the Cubs lose 5 of the next 6, fired Dusty, hire whomever your manager or preference may be, and then go on a tear and win the WC?

Alright, so that would be win/win, but I'd have to be much more sure that Dusty would get canned for 1-5 in order to be hoping for that record.

Agreed. The odds are a bit long on that scenario.

Now that my earlier prediction - if the Cubs were swept by SD Baker would be fired - has been proven wrong, I think I'll get on bd. with the ASB scenario. This of course is like a two year-old sucking his thumb, carrying his security blanket, and hoping for the best.

If your scenario comes true the Cubs will need to go 74-45 for the remainder of the season to finish with 90 wins. I don't see that happening with this bunch of "talent".

As far as I'm concerned, he already has had his chance to work out of it. Keeping him after the 8-game losing streak was giving him that chance. The subsequent losing streak was him blowing that chance. The come-from-ahead loss on Saturday, followed by the 9-0 loss on Sunday, was the last straw. Time for him to go.

no kidding. is every two game win streak from here on out going to erase the seven game losing streak that precedes it? lose eight in row, win two. he's safe. lose six out of seven, win two out of three. he's safe. lose nine out of ten, win two. he's safe.

not that it matters anyway...this team isn't very good, baker or no baker.

Dusty had his 2nd chance at the start of 2004. He had it again when they picked up Nomar. Then he got his 3rd chance at the start of 2005. And his 4th when they got the in house "boost" of the injured players returning later in that same season. His 5th was at the start of this season. His 6th was after the first losing streak. I really don't have the patience to give him a 7th.

I think the only way Baker gets fired is if the Cubs do have a White-Flag sale and end the season with rookies playing in 5-6 positions. Personally, I don't think that is going to happen. The Cubs have too large of a payroll and too much competition (White Sox) to just kiss off the season. The Cubs aren't going to go into a 3-4 year rebuilding state (that's what it would take) while the Sox are winning the AL Central and contending for the WS. I look for the Cubs to rebound in the 2nd half and finish a little over .500, Baker will be extended, and Hendry will make lots of late season and off-season deals to try to correct the problems.

Yea, like he has done for the past two off-seasons. Instead of correcting problems he's either magnified them or utterly rejected that they exist.

Jim,

Fat, drunk, and stupid is no way to go through life.

Honestly, I think the best thing Cubs fans can hope for is Baker not being offered an extention. I think he'll finish out the season and management will determine what to do with him after that. But I just don't see him getting fired.

gotta lose another 14 out of 16 to get him fired.

agreed. root for absolute failure and that means a lot of guys will have sucked. not a good way to go into 2007.
