I read today that Jeff Fassero has been sent down today by whoever he plays for (The Giants?). I'll always remember Jeff for stepping into the closers role when Flash! went down at the start of 2001 when the Cubbies were rocking and the bullpen needed a boost.

Of course, he couldn't maintain it, but for a couple of months, Jeff Fassero was a major reason the Cubs were contenders and was a class act his entire tenure with the team.

Goodbye Jeff, you'll be missed.

I'll also remember him for grooving one to Sammy in that huge 5-game series against the Cards in Sept '03, a walkoff HR in extra innings. When he came in the game the crowd immediately sensed something good was about to happen, and they were right.

For a few months that Cubs pen in '01 looked like it might carry them to a WC berth. I remember Van Poppel & Worrell being nice surprises too, and Farnsy was on an odd-numbered year.

I remember my ancestors telling me about the time Fassero struck out three batters in one inning right and then helped the Israelites defeat the Egyptians in extra innings. Pharoah was so pissed off he chased them into the Red Sea.

:D I think Julio Franco was one of the Egyptians he struck out.

We should see if he'd be willing to come to Chicago and pitch batting practice...I'd even be willing to give him a 25 man roster spot if it was Bynum that got let go....at least Fassero would contribute in some way.

I think Terry Mulholland was on the Egyptian team as well.

Fassero was the instigator of one of my greatest Cub-induced meltdowns ever. Luckily I was home by myself.

They were in the final game of a series in San Diego in late August in 2001. At this point in the year Baylor had already pitched the poor guy's arm off. The Cubs scrap and claw to tie or take a one-run lead against the Pads in a game they absolutely had to have.

Padres get a guy on in the bottom of the eighth and Klesko is coming up. At this point in the year Fassero couldn't get me out but Baylor brings him in because, hey, he's a lefty... I'm screaming at the TV at this point, Baylor you idiot, Fassero's going to serve one up.

Fassero promptly serves up room service fastball that Klesko hits so far it needed a passport when it landed. Cubs lose and start a tailspin that they never really recovered from. In the words of Ralphie in a Christmas Story I proceeded to weave a tapestry of profanity that to this day still hangs somewhere over Central Texas.

As galactically bad as Baker is handling a pitching staff and making in-game decisions, Baylor may have been worse.

Too bad Fassero couldn't have stuck with the Giants through this series and pitched against the Cubs. That may have been our best chance at a win.

I was at that game. Right field foul line. I got a crick in my neck watching that shot.

And it wasn't just getting a guy on. It was a grand slam.

Just looked it up. It was August 2nd, 2001. Jason Bere went 7 innings and struck out 12. Cubs were winning 3-0 in the 9th when Klesko hit a grand slam walk off HR.

The homer was in the eighth, not the ninth. I'm looking at the boxscore right now. Bere went seven, gave up three hits, struck out 12. Fassero went 1/3 of an inning, gave up three hits and a walk and four runs on the granny.

Hoffman got the save and, get this, Chuck Freakin' McElroy got the win.

why do the cubs hit bad, soft throwing lefties?

....never mind

Actually, I'm surprized he didn't stick around through the Cub series. If he had pitched, he might have revived his career.

If it were actually his decision, as opposed to the Giants' I'm sure he would have.
