I like Speier. When was the last time that Speier goofed up? I couldn't honestly tell you, unlike the days of "Wavin" Wendell.

Well, it's not like he's had too many chances to prove himself.

Jokes aside, I think Speier is a very good coach and wouldn't mind seeing him given the chance.

If Baker was fired they might go with Rothschild as an interim.

I highly doubt that.

They may if they didn't think their man would be available till the winter for some reason. Then they could blame the Cubs current record on Dusty, the Cubs record at the end of the season on Larry, and get the man they REALLY want this winter....

But if their guy is available now, then Larry as interim would make little sense.

After watching today's game, I don't see how anyone can deny Baker needs to be fired. This team was totally unprepared for the game and that's the manager's job. Why weren't they running on Piazza? Baker talks about shaking up the lineup and puts Neifi at 2B while Theriot sits. After Cedeno's mistakes today, I would expect Neifi to be at SS tomorrow (even though Neifi made an error on a bonehead play too).

the problem is that anyone who is stupid enough to think that hawkins was the answer at closer, nomar would stay healthy(and wood-prior), and that jones or burnitz was the answer to our outfield problems(or dubois, lawton, gerult)

would probably think that dusty will revert to his form of a few years ago...see pierre, juan and jones, jacques...

Not to nitpick, but Hawkins was brought in to be the set-up man. Even before last season Hendry was pushing for Dempster to close. The only person who thought Hawk was the answer was Dusty.

I still doubt it. I could see Dick Pole as the interim manager---if he isn't fired with Baker...if/when that happens---but not Rothschild.

If Dusty was fired, Spier would be the interim because it would be likely that Dusty wouldn't be the only guy gone. I would imagine that only Spier and Rothschild would survive and Spier was a final candidate before Dusty was hired. I would imagine that Dickerson would be the new 3b coach as well.

Pole came here with Baker while Rothschild was here already.Speier or Rothschild would be the choices. Its possible Dusty would resign before getting fired.I don't see him getting fired though.

He MUST be fired, and before one more game is played. This team has quit. Getting swept for the entire season by San Diego (both home and away) is inexcusable. The writing was on the wall. After yesterday's catastrophe I said in the game thread that I foresaw the Cubs losing something like 15-0 today, and I turned out to be close. The team is in a tailspin that will not end until something drastic happens. He's lost the team; he's no longer able to motivate them or get them back up after a tough loss.

Tomorrow's an off-day, and it MUST be used to replace the manager and possibly make other changes. If Hendry can't see that, then MacPhail must step in and make the change himself. The organization as it currently stands has reached the end and cannot continue without changes for even one more game.

I agree that the team has quit. This reminds me of the last place Cubs in the 50's & 60's that gave up when they fell behind by a run. Watching this team, they know something bad is going to happen and when it does they collapse. Hendry has to do something like make a trade or fire the manager to shake up the team. I believe Hendry when he says that he has been trying to make a deal, but the asking price has been ridiculous because of the desperate situation the Cubs are in. That leaves the second option......fire the manager.

Dusty looked battered in the post-game press conference. I know he has prided himself in never quitting, but I'm not sure he wants to play this one out.

I could see him working out an agreement in which he re-signs but yet keeps a portion of his salary for this year. I'm not sure he really wants an extension.

He's made enough money, so he could sit out and go fishing until some desperate team called him to manage.

Davey Johnson, please!

I think Vance means resigns in this situation.

I do. My mistake.

In all honesty, I don't see Baker quitting or being fired before the end of the season.

He wouldn't quit halfway through the season. That's not his style.

Can anyone link/describe the post-game coverage? I didn't get to see any...

Here's hoping I wake up in the morning, check the transactions forum and see a Dusty Baker has been canned thread. Then again, I was hoping for the same thing last year and it didn't happen. The simple fact that Hendry has been re-signed doesn't bode well for us Cubs fans. Rock bottom folks, this is it. This is what Hendry gets out of his 100mil payroll.

No need to start a bunch of new Dusty topics...there's a bunch in Baseball Discussions, and there's this one and probably a few others here...lets try to keep it to what's already here ok? :)

I keep checking in to see if there is any news on his status and don't see any good news yet. Just the status quo.

Don't worry that Baker extension should be coming any day now.
