I hate to rehash old posts with a new one but it makes me feel better to vent. The league, the southpaw pitchers, the fans etc, everyone but dusty knows we can.t hit southpaws, but we keep seeing Pierre (248) jones (200). And Jones who isn.t hitting anyone makes too maky mistakes, doesn't advance runners, base running mistakes that he calls being aggressive and I call bad baseball, he swings for the fences and continues playing, and we can't beat DUKE from pittsburgh. Our bench is horrible, and the loss on Lee is just one man. Pierre is bad, Restovich is worse. Bring up some more young position players and SIT those that looks as though they aren't trying. We are going to have a good pitching staff and a lousy hitting team, except for several young players and our professional hitter, Walker we are swinging at too many of the pitchers pitches.

DUKE from pittsburgh is good.

No....Duke from Pittsburgh is merely SOLID against the REST of the league. Against the Cubs, Duke is simply Cy Young reincarnated.

Looking back at it...I'd prefer to have seen the Marshall .v. Duke matchup.

2005 8-2 1.81 ERA

Career 10-4 2.33 ERA

small sample but I'd say that's good.

But I figure his era will prolly jumped abit within the next couple of yrs.

How much is a bit? I highly doubt he'll maintain that great of a career ERA, but I don't think he'll have a really high career ERA either.

i know the discussion is left handers, but I think we can all agree being owned by Duke (tues.), is much much more exceptable than getting owned by Santos (mon.)

Jones and Pierre don't help too much right now, but I don't think Left handers are the problem. Besides being left handed the one thing that the pitchers who have recently shut down the Cubs is that they don't throw too many strikes.

With the free swinging attitude of the Cubs one would think it is 1976 instead of 2006. I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't throw car keys in a fish bowl after the game and go home to different spouses each night.

Who "looks as though they aren't trying?" And don't mix up being a bad hitter for not trying.

He's good but, 40% of those career wins are against the Cubs, in fact he's 4-0 with an ERA of 0.56 vs. the Cubs. Subtract the Cub totals and he's 6-4 2.94 ERA, still good but, not as in-human as his stats are vs. the Cubs.

Victor the Vampire! I told you guys in the Game Thread that day: watch out for Victor Santos at night in the spring. We Brewer fans call him the Vampire for a reason. He pitches well in the first half, and at night. Seriously. Look it up.

Duke, I would maintain, is better than some hack who can only beat the Cubs. He's a very good young lefty with the potential to really be a star.

Agreed, Duke was always very well regarded as a prospect. On the other hand, it doesn't excuse our offensive ineptitude, but it's easier to take than getting shut down by someone like Eric Milton.

Exactly. I like Duke, I like him a lot. Struggling against him should come as no surprise to anybody. He's going to do that to teams for quite a few years.

As someone mentioned earlier its not that they, save for Jones, cannot hit LHP's, its their aggression that's getting them out. Duke and Capuano have pretty good stuff, I wouldn't call them soft-tossing junkballers, Mulder and Davis are soft tossing junkballers, all of these LHP's take the same approach. Live on the outer third of the plate, counting on the agressive hitter trying crush and pull everything thereby generating GB's to 2b, SS, and 3b. Its the hitters who exercise some patience and look to take the pitch the other way that smoke these guys, you'd think after seeing the same thing over and over again the Cub hitters would figure it out.
