According to an article in NY Newsday, the Marlins offered Dontrelle Willis to the Mets straight up for David Wright a few weeks ago, but talks went no where.

The Marlins made a bombshell trade suggestion to the Mets within the past several weeks - Dontrelle Willis for David Wright - people familiar with the brief trade talk told Newsday.

If the straight-up swap of young stars was at all intriguing to the Mets, they didn't show it immediately. The discussion halted almost as soon as the idea was broached.

Even if for some reason the Mets were to change their minds about the proposal, the deal may not be available now. Sometime after this star-swap suggestion, Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria, to quell speculation about their two stars, including Miguel Cabrera, publicly denied his club was shopping either player. "They're not going anywhere," Loria said in South Florida papers April 15. "We are not shopping players."

So much for Loria claiming all the trade Willis/Cabrera talk was false.

If I were NY, I would have offered Wright for Willis + a couple of other prospects? The Mets farm isnt very strong on pitching, they could have boosted it a little bit with Florida, they have a ton to offer.

There are not many players in baseball for whom I'd trade Wright. Very, very few.

I assume you mean straight up? Willis plus two upper-tier pitching prospects could really turn around the Mets long term pitching outlook. I wouldnt do it for two "decent" pitching prospects in addition to Willis, it would have to be two of their better pitching prospects.

I really don't like their pitching prospects all that much. It's just a bunch of 3-4 starters that teams like the Mets can afford through FA. Florida has tremendous depth but little top line talent in their farm system at this point. Certainly not the kind of talent that will turn around the Mets pitching system. Heck, one of the top guys in the marlins farm system came from the Mets this past offseason!

David Wright now(). But in two yrs....Zimmerman will be appraching Wright's status, so that question will be harder to answer.

I would never trade Wright for Willis. I don't think I'd trade Wright for Miggy.

That's funny, cause I'd prolly wouldn't trade Cabrera for Wright. Cabrera is still the best young hitter in the NL East, if NOT all NL/MLB. The difference between Wright and Cabrera, is that Cabrera has NO LEGITIMATE major league hitter protecting him, whereas Wright has Delgado, Floyd and Beltran and to a lesser degree Lo Duca protecting Wright. I slightly take Cabrera, mainly because he is 4 months younger then Wright, and has ALREADY 2 thirty homerun season/110+ rbis seasons under his belt.

I like Wright, but I love Miguel Cabrera game, more.

I get to see Wright play a lot more than Cabrera and I just like Wrights whole game and attitude. Cabrera hits and will hit well throughout his career but something about him just bugs me. But, I think it would depend on what each team would want and need from the players to judge this trade or make a deal.

I think Sanchez and Olsen project at higher than 3-4 starters.

Seconded.

Thirded

Fourth-ed

I agree, but the gap in talent closes significantly when you think about their service times and impending FA.

For the record, Cabrera has 2+ years service time, while Wright has 1+. If Wright is a super-two(I don't think that's likely, but I can't be sure) then they'll be on the same track to Free Agency.

Tough call. I like Wright better as a more consistent hitter over the long term I think. But Cabrera has added value because he can play three, if not four, positions on the field, and play all of them with at least acceptable defense.

Wright seems like more of clubhouse guy, while Cabrera has quickly earned a reputation as a bit of a horse's ass. I guess if push REALLY came to shove, I'd take Wright.

I can understand that, Don, but Aramis was known as a lazy bum in Pittsburgh, but that seem to change as he GOT OLDER as a player. Something tells me, Miggy will mature as he gets older.

I absolutely love Wright, but Cabrera to ME, seems more like a franchise player, then Wright. To me...Cabrera has that Pujols type feel to him as a player, where as Wright has more of a Scott Rolen feel. Not saying being compare to Rolen is a bad thing, I'm saying that Cabrera, to me is more a FRANCHISE/IMPACT player then Wright, regardless of "attitudes in the clubhouse."

Excellent points. There is a definate difference between All-Star players and franchise players and I think Wright and Rolen are All-Star players. Regardless of what Cabrera's attitude is, one can't argue with his production on the field. It will be interesting to see how much Cabrera's numbers suffer this year with absolutely nobody protecting him.

I think Wright will put up Rolen-type nos.; Cabrera Ramirez-type nos. If that is in fact the case, I'd take Cabrera.

Wright in his first full season put up a season better than Rolen's average(or on par with any season of Rolen's except 2004).

I am guessing that, over the next 5-7 years, Wright will be Rolen and Cabrera will be Manny. This is my opinion based on nothing other than my hunch. Accordingly, I'll take Cabrera by a nose.
