Positive outlook. I'd like to get a positive outlook going. Firstly, let's look at who the Cubs play after the Cardinals. Florida, Brewers, Pirates, Diamondbacks, Padres. By the time we start facing tougher teams, you figure we will have atleast Wood back. So don't give up yet folks, we've got an easy schedule for the next couple of weeks.

Now moving on from that. Now that we only have 1 "big bat" in our line-up, possibly for up to 3 months, and not knowing how well Derrick Lee will return to action when he DOES get back. Do you think JH will make a trade?

This is a good team. We've got off to a great start. We have an incredible bullpen, and even the bottom part of our line-up is good (IE: No automatic outs). . I think JH SHOULD make a trade, but will he? If you ask me, I'd want to energize the Cubs with the aquisition of Cabrera. I'd give Florida whatever they wanted short of Murton and Cedeno, and possibly Guzman. Hill, Pie, Ryu, Marshall, Guzman, and any coveted position player in our minors is up for grabs. My point is, I just don't want to see JH squander this great team, and just sit on his hands and watch this season go down the tubes. .

Obviously I am going to be watching with optomism these next few series hoping our weakend line-up and win some series vs. these weak teams. But I am holding out hope JH will bring a savior to the Cubs team. Let's discuss, and get some opimism in this thread!!

Thats a long list not to give up for Cabrera. And I would think Florida would want to wait till the trade deadline to deal him for a team that woud be more desperate for a playoff run. Give up Guz and Marsh. They prob wont want Murton. Deal with bad D in RF with either Murt or Cabrera. Have an expensive 4th OF in Jones.

This isn't probable anyway, but if you wanna go for Cabrera sell what you need to now and know that when Lee is healthly it will REALLY pay off. Serious contenders there. We wont get Miquel cheap. Pay up big now or we will have to make a big run with healthly Wood, Prior, Miller, Lee. That may be enough. If you think you need a Cabrera to pick up slack pay a little bit more than you'd like. It will be worth it when we are serious WS contenders.

Dude, come on. The least you can do is spell our MVP candidate's name right. Derrick, please. That's not even close.

As for this team, I would hardly call it great, I think with Lee in the lineup we have a decent team THIS YEAR, but that's only because the NL isn't very good as whole this year. I don' care what anybody else thinks or what Bob's personal statistical opinion on the matter is. This team isn't going to make the playoffs this year without DLee playing for a couple months.

Honestly, I hope somebody remembers this and, if we make the playoffs, ridicules me relentlessly for it. But I don't see Cubs 2006 and making the playoofs in the same sentence.

Excuse me while I savage your post.

First, you have been here long enough to know we discourage that sort of language. Second, who cares how he spelled Lee's name; I fail to see how that is relevant to what he posted.

Now, back to the substance. I'd be shocked if JH even approached the Marlins re Cabrera. His behind is no longer on the line now that he has his extension, which means he is far less likely to pull a Steve Phillips or Brian Cashman and mortgage the farm to get a superstar MLer.

If Hendry gets an impact bat that will make a difference then yeah, go for it. But, if he overpays for a mediocre bat I think the Cubs are going to have a problem depending on who he trades. If Hendry can aquire a solid righty hitter without giving up a lot that would be fine. Personally, I'd like to see who would be interested in Williamson, Perez, Williams, Hairston, Pierre and Jones. Plus, Wood when he gets off the DL....hopefully he'll give some teams the illusion he can pitch and stay healthy and the Cubs can move him to Texas. I think trading a combination of these guys would make the team better now and in the future.

Glendon is a keeper in your mind? The problem with waiting to deal Wood is that (besides the obligatory no trade clause response) he wont be tradeable until Lee is probably half way done with his DL stint. Regarding trading for a big bat...when was the last time a superstar was dealt in April?

There aren't many people on that list that are going to get you much in a trade, especially since most of them have issues (Perez - benchwarmer, Williams, Pierre, Jones - slow starts, and Wood - health). I think the best possibility would be Craig Wilson from the Pirates.

I don't anticipate a major move at this time. I look for Hendry to see what happens over the next couple of weeks. If it looks like the Cubs can remain in the race with the current team I'd look for him to follow his M.O. from recent years (waiting until close to the deadline to see who becomes available at a decent price). If it looks like the Cubs are sinking then I think he'll do what it takes to stop the slide before it's too late.

Rusch is servicable but you're right, he can be moved too.

This is what I fear as well. We will do well against the easy teams that next few weeks. Then we don't get anyone and fail miserably vs. the good teams coming up next. .

I'm not sure if we can take Hendry at his word, but in the pre-game today he basically said there wouldn't be a trade...

He does that alot. He doesn't want to give the appearance he's desperate. But if he's indeed truthful. My last thread of hope lays in doing well vs. the weak teams coming up and Wood coming back dominating. That's the only thread I have left.

I expect Hendry to wait until we are about 6 or 7 games back with 4 or more teams ahead of us in both races and then make a move when it's basically too late. After the season, he'll say he did everything he could but the injuries were too much. See ya next year chumps.

What I wouldn't do for Jim to be hit with a colletti Lazer beam right now.

Did anyone catch when he said "You cant trade for a superstar in April?" 2 key words. "Superstar" "April" Maybe, just maybe, Jim is looking at Cabrera in May or June? Or maybe I'm just reading too much into that statement.

You're reading too much into it, IMO. Plus, we need Cabrera in April, early May. Not June. It's too late in June. .

Look at the white sox record in the second half of last year if you need to feel better.

the problem is that with the team the cubs now have, they will struggle with the weak teams who you really need to beat the crap out of to win the division. at full strength, the cubs still will have a hard time being better than .500 against the good teams.
