With Greg Maddux's sizzling start, is it a no-brainer the Cubs will be discussing a contract extension at the end of the season? The Cubs already have lost Maddux to free agency once after the '92 season. The chances of them letting him go as he chases Clemens' 341 wins seem slim, and agent Scott Boras acknowledged Maddux, who has 321 wins, probably would prefer to stay.

It's a good point, we get an extra 10 wins added on in the standings when we have the all-time leader in pitching W's, so maybe we should keep him around.

I know Maddux has a history with the Cubs and free agency, but it gives me hope that the Cubs didn't even think about signing Alou after an all world season because of his age. They didn't go after Giles because of age. Didn't sign Grudz after a good season because of age. I don't think Hendry will re-sign Maddux, because of age.

I recall reading that Hendry wanted Alou to stay but didn't keep him because of the uncertainty surrounding Sosa's contract.

I dunno, I remember Alou being upset that he didn't even get a call from Hendry or any courtesy interest even though they knew they weren't bringing him back.

I remember that also. I wish I had a link for the other one, because I'm quite sure I read it somewhere.

I was disappointed we didn't bring Alou back. He definately would have helped last year. Probably wouldn't have got us to the playoffs, but definately would have helped.

You're right. Having Alou last year and this year would have been way better than Burntiz and Jones, and we could move on after this year too, not be stuck.
