I'm sorry, but winning over 15 games ONCE in a season doesen't qualify Zambrano as "elite" or "amazing."

Do you want to know how many 15-win seasons Jake Peavy has?

Peavy and Zambrano are similar. Peavy gets shelled badly one day, then throws a great game the next. Neither are consistent in my opinion.

zambrano continues to suck it up....way to step it up with prior and wood gone.

What do you mean "continues?" Did you watch the last game he pitched against the Cardinals? 0 ER.

He lost his composure in that game too because of errors behind him.

I'd loose my composure too if I had this lineup behind me

A pitcher shouldn't worry about what lineup supports him. Anytime you let up 4 runs by the 3rd inning you are in trouble.

wrong.

pitchers have off days, this is true, but when you turn around and realize two or three mistakes just cost you the game because there is ZERO chance of your team helping you out, it matters.

Ramirez can't play, so are you saying that Barrett being out automatically turns this lineup into one that has zero chance of winning? Eric Milton is not Steve Carlton, he can be hit even with this lineup. Zambrano seems to have somewhat lost it when he forgot that Lee wasn't covering first.

And Murton homers.

Elite pitchers don't melt down when a miscommunication happens, hit the next batter and then go 3-0 from over throwing and serve up a gopher ball. He absolutely has to learn to check himself.

I have to agree.

I couldn't agree more. It seems like Z either has a great game or terrible game. When a game starts to go bad he just loses it.

I don't think he's hot and cold necessarily but watch out if a miscue occurs in the inning.

MURTON homers!

If Zambrano can hold them down from this point on, it'll be OK, the Cubs are to going get to this clown (Milton)...

Like in Milton's last two starts vs them?

Oh, wait, thats right, Milton is a piss poor excuse for a pitcher, but because he's left handed he will shut us down.

All this is going back to coaching. Nobody seems to have taught Z that he needs to step off, take a breath, and not overthrow, he keeps doing it and I see nothing changing.

Almost nobody on this team is patient. There's being aggressive and then there's what this team does. Nobody seems to be able to get up for the teams like the Reds, which is why if we get to the playoffs, we can contend, but we won't be able to get there as long as this team continues this poor play against bad teams, especially bad pitchers. It seems like we get shut down by way too many bad pitchers.

I'm not sold on him completely, as being our number 1 guy.

His ERA over the last 3 years is second lowest in the NL! If that's not elite, what is?

How old is he?

Elite? No question.

I love Zambrano, but he isn't the guy that we would want in a pressure situation. I'm thinking playoffs and world series. I can envision a complete meltdown in a game 7 scenario.

I hear ya...but on the other hand.....look at how big Z steps up every time he faces the Cards. He has thrown some gems while facing Carpenter. It shows he can indeed handle pressure.

Atta boy Murton!!!!

Please, someone get a bat and just swing it at my head as hard as possible.

WINS ARE A TEAM STAT, not a stat to judge pitchers by. In fact it's the worst statistical category to judge a pitchers stuff by. BAA, HR/9, K/9, K:BB, ERA+, ERA, OPS Against, WHIP in conjunction with HR/9 and SLG% against are all infinitely better stats to determine "amazing" and "elite"

^^^ I think I'm putting the above on my cut/paste board.

And yet another game thread breaks turns into an argument!

My good God. Zambrano sucked on opening day, threw a great game against the Cards, and has sucked so far today. He's a great pitcher, but his season isn't starting off so hot. Can we move along now?

Quoted to remind you that in the middle of the quarreling, a game thread broke out.

If wins were a team stat, then Shawn Estes was one of the best pitches a couple years ago when he won 15 games with the Rockies.

Why people continue to act like wins are good stat to measure pitchers is beyond me.

I guarantee if the Cubs win this game it will be because DLee or Murton each hit at least one more home run with Pierre or Hairston on, because our 5-9 may not register a hit all day.

Errr...Z sucks because he walked 1 hit 1 and then gave up a homer.

Nice to know that Z sucks because of 3 mistakes when he had dominated the previous 2 innings.
