Gammons also mentioned in the game how he tried to pitch to Lee to sign with the Red Sox or Yankees after the season. Absurd.

Off with his head!

Yeah! I hope that whatever was going on in the stands, that Gammons got punked.

I don't have the exact quote or wording but I believe DLee said something to the effect of " The money doesn't mean that much to me, I want to play for the Cubs."

That's pretty close. And Gammons wasn't pitching the big markets to Lee. He asked a question that any reporter would ask a recent MVP candidate in a contract year.

I completely disagree. Knowing Gammons's history and the fact that he explicitly told Lee you will make more money if you go to the Red Sox or Yankees was pretty unprofessional. If a team asked Derrek that question it would be tampering, because Gammons is a supposed unbiased reporter, it's "journalism"

I think you read too much into that. It seemed to be nothing more than Peter feeding the Gods of the feel-good quotes. He knew the answer before he asked the question.

I'm sick of hearing the deal is almost done. Let's just get it done so everybody can enjoy his season without having to worry about if Lee is going to leave after the season.

The Score and ESPN AM 1000 are reporting that the Cubs are holding a press conference tomorrow at 10 AM. The team won't confirm that it is about Lee's contract but that's probably the case...

i have a bad feeling about this. i think we might be seeing something crazy here.

If he becomes a FA the number could be insane. I hope they have settled this extension.

Maybe we traded for Nomar.

Since we are stating our opinions, I think you are way off. They wouldn't hold a press conference to tell the fans that Lee is being stubborn and won't agree to a reasonable extension. That has never been Hendry's m.o. When he has fiured away at players in the past, its been through subtle commentary in informal interviews.

I'm pretty sure whether it's crazy or not my reaction is going to be "I really hope he's the best hitter in the game for a while longer".

well sure, but if we decided it would be fun to give him 5/70, we're going to be wishing a heck of a lot harder.

Pretty sure Tree was referring to crazy numbers, not that Lee is holding out or anything.

That said...if Lee wanted crazy numbers, free agency would've been the way to get that.

4/48 is my guess.

5/70 for Lee would be a fair deal for the Cubs. Jim Thome got 6/85 in 2002.

Exactly. As Gammons mentioned last night, if he wanted go FA, NY and Boston would compete to see how many Brinks trucks they could drive to his door. Lee would likely put up some monster numbers in Boston.

Crisp

2

Lee

Ortiz

Manny

That would be sick.

and that was a terrible deal

Well if Thome could get more money and more years than that in 2002, what makes you think Lee can't get even better offers from more than one team? He's a better player too. Do you just not want the Cubs to have those kind of players? I don't think we could win if we just let him walk and signed someone cheaper.
