I believe there is something like 46 players still in camp. I am surprised that more cuts havent been made by now. Its got to happen shortly. I wonder if there is a trade or two upcoming and that is the hold up.

It's going to come down to the wire to see how guys like Theriot, Pagan, Grissom (less so b/c his advanced citizenship gives him the edge), and Restovich play. Another start for Hill and Marshall could also be in the works. It sounds like JK might make the club as longman. Wellemeyer too. Weurtz is bound for the minors unless he turns it around real quick.

A lot of guys are on the bubble.

Is this speculation or have you heard this somewhere?

Cubs | Ryu could spell relief

Wed, 22 Mar 2006 00:21:02 -0800

Updating a previous item, The Chicago Tribune reports Chicago Cubs P Jae Kuk Ryu may make the team as a relief pitcher instead, as the Cubs are looking for reliever help.

It cited Kiley as the earlier source.

I think it is speculation from Paul Sullivan. I just don't think JK has the track record to claim that 5th spot in the rotation. Wuertz is sucking it up right now. Novoa is sick. Wellemeyer probably gets traded or put in the pen until he is traded since he's out of options. That final BP spot is open and Ryu is the only one pitching well (that isn't cast as a definite starter come hell or high water). There are some holes in our pen. Wellemeyer hasn't been very impressive in ST at all and doesn't really deserve to make the team, but keeping him on the 25 man may buy JH some more time to send him packing for more than a used jockstrap.

Our Pen:

Dempster

Howry

Eyre

Ohman

Williamson

????

The open spot is Wuertz's if he can get his act together in time, but if not, I think Ryu really is the frontrunner assuming the Wellemeyer situation is resolved before opening day.

Here is Kiley's quote in today's Suntimes

FITTING IN: If Korean right-hander Jae Kuk Ryu leaves spring training on the Cubs' roster, manager Dusty Baker said his best role might be in long relief. If Todd Wellemeyer makes the club -- and he is pitching better lately -- he also would seem to be a long reliever.

Baker said it's possible Ryu and Wellemeyer could share that role at the start of the season. Wellemeyer is out of options and likely will break camp with the Cubs, barring a final-week collapse.

Ryu's first crack at the majors probably depends on how right-hander Michael Wuertz fares in the final days of spring training. Wuertz has struggled lately.

"Maybe [Wuertz is] going through a dead-arm period,'' Baker said.

Here's Sullivan comments from the Tribune

If Jae Kuk Ryu makes the team as a long man in the bullpen, that leaves Rich Hill, Sean Marshall and Angel Guzman to compete for the fifth-starter's spot. Baker said the Cubs likely will send one of the candidates to Double-A and a couple to Triple-A so they all can be on similar schedules to start April 15. Marshall has made only 10 career starts at the Double-A level.

"If it's between two guys, we can work it out at Triple-A (Iowa), more or less," pitching coach Larry Rothschild said.

I like that they aren't just gonna dump Wellemeyer, but man, at least trade him for a minor leaguer. If Wellemeyer and Ryu are in the bullpen, they will probably pitch no more than once each before the injured pitchers start to come back. I can only assume if both are in the pen, that means 12 pitchers, at least after the 15th.

Ryu, as impressive as he's been this spring, should probably be in Iowa. He's better off starting than relieving, especially if he's only gonna get a couple of appearances, which will probably be the case. And I think leaving Wuertz off the 25 man would be a bit silly. He's good; it's just that he's struggling a bit.

What does Wuertz have to do with Ryu making the team? Surely they aren't considering leaving Wuertz off the 25 man, right?

Yes, they are considering demoting Wuertz if he doesn't get it together. Ryu might get his spot but the true beneficiary is Welly (unless he tanks in the final days they will keep him).

As far as I know Wuertz still has an option(s) left. If it wasn't for Wellemeyer, he'd probably still be on the 25 man come the regular season.

I think the team is concerned about having a struggling guy in the bullpen right now. As it stands, they will need a good bit of execution (and fortune) to do well the first month of the season. Of course, if Wuertz is demoted he probably will have an opportunity to regain his spot by pitching well in the Minors.

My guess is that Ryu could be sent down to make room for the fifth starter beginning on the 15th.

Oh, I think Wuertz will make it. He had such a good year last year, they will give him the benefit of the doubt. Apparently the Arizona air isn't good for sliders anyway.

I think the longman job will come down to Wellemeyer vs. Ryu.

So it'd be:

Dempster / Eyre / Howry / Williamson / Ohman / Wuertz / and Wellemyer or Ryu

So they're actually giving thought to keeping both Wellemeyer and Ryu instead of Wuertz? That's heinously dumb.
agreed- Wellemeyer has shown nothing this ST except he would make a great pinata-Ryu, has shown flashes but this kids value is in the rotation either here or in Iowa-not sitting at the end of the bullpen watching Dusty run Williamson and Howry oout there everyday. It would be a profoundly Cubbiesque move to make ryu the 12th man on the staff and stick him in the bullpen tus killing his value on the market. Wuertz has earned a right to be in the bullpen this year with last years performance, hell, grissoms making the team off 1996's numbers.

I'll be really surprised if that happens. Safe bet is on Wuertz to make the team.

How about Andy Sisco for that bullpen job? Oh, wait.......

Dude, its been over a year. When can we give it a rest?

dude, Willis was traded 3 years ago and people still won't shut up about it
