Even if you set aside the Walker/Soriano comparison, there's no reason for Washington to do this deal. They're basically forced to trade Soriano because they already have a second baseman, and acquiring Walker, who can't play anywhere else but first, doesn't make any sense.

Like everyone else, I'm a big fan of Todd Walker but if Bowden was willing to take him straight up for Soriano straight up...I think I would do it. Todd might be a little better defensively but Soriano has more power.

WHo plays LF for the Nationals? I doubt they would put walker out there.

The only way Washington does this is if they believe that Walker could play leftfield. I doubt they do.

Now, a three-way that sends Walker to Baltimore, Matos and Wellemeyer to Washington, and Soriano to the Cubs could happen.

Or, if the Cubs sent Hairston to Washington for Soriano, I could see that happening as well.

The Cubs, like nearly every team, only had interest in Soriano as an outfielder in light of his league leading errors at second. Really don't see the club changing that preference.

Considering the great bad-attitude purge from last offseason, I don't think they're going to trade TWalk for another bad-attitude. I could see them trading TWalk for another version of Neifi with a great attitude though (I hope not...).

It's bad enough that there are people with the Cubs that I do not like. It would be something entirely different to then also have a player on the team that I can't stand.

Selfish players who think they are bigger than the game themselves are not welcome. I hope he sits out all season. I applaud the Nationals for taking a stand against Soriano.

Just think...they gave up BWilk and Sledge for this guy. Nats got ripped off, royally...

Yeah, and I have absolutely zero sympathy for them. Didn't they think to ask Soriano if he'd be willing to play in the OF? If they did, I'm assuming he said no, and they deserve the trouble they're getting. Likewise, if they didn't, then they still deserve all the trouble they're getting.

I think that Soriano is being a jerk too, but you've got to admit that the Nationals created this situation themselves.

I would not do it. I wouldn't touch the whiny Soriano with a ten foot poll.

Even if you were going to whack him with it?

If I knew it as fact, then yeah, I'd have an issue with the way Washington has dealt with this as well. But, I don't know that as fact.

The Nats asked for permission from the Rangers to speak with Soriano prior to the trade.

Permission was denied.

The Nats made the deal anyway (obviously).

I wonder if this was because Texas knew Washington wanted to make him an OF, and Texas already knew he didn't want to do that...

It still seems rather foolish to do the deal whether permission was granted or denied. Texas was actively shopping him. They denied permission because they knew Soriano would kill the deal. The Nats should have been more prudent and pulled away.

While Soriano is being foolish so were the Nats. There are no winners here. Just two big jackasses.

Bowden made the move under the assumption that the reason Texas denied the Nationals' request to speak with Soriano was that he would reject a move to the OF. He knew this was coming.

Soriano doesn't get credit for service time if he's put on the DQ list. So it's not like he can just sit this year out and get his FA money (which would probably be more impacted by the loss of playing time rather than a position change).

Everyone in baseball knew he didn't want to move to the outfield. He didn't want a position change with the Yankees. He said no when inquiries were made by the Cubs and Astros and Washington acknowledged his stance when they made the trade. So, yes, the Nationals did anticipate that there could be a problem, but may not have thought Soriano would not honor his contract.

Soriano should just play the outfield and make his wishes known everyday to the media. Then, Washington couldn't refuse to pay him and he can showcase his skills to other teams.

Walker for Soriano doesn't make sense since Walker's defense seems to be the main reason JH wants to trade him. Soriano is only a marginal improvement offensively at best and looking at his road splits is troubling. He just offers more speed, more HR power (which could dropoff significantly outside of Arlington) at the expense of the worst 2B defense in the majors and a whole lot of patience which is what this team really needs to improve.

Morgan isn't in that list because he's in the 'announcers to kick in the nads' list (actually Buck, McCarver & Harrelson are all in that list too).

Paul Maguire and Keith Jackson also belong on that list.
