They originally thought that Novoa had pneumonia and was semi-quarantied for the past week or two. They just said on WGN Radio, though, that he was diagnosed with valley fever. He hasn't been able to throw more than five pitches without having trouble breathing.

There's no way he's going to be able to start the season on time.

I don't know much about it other than it's an infection caused by fungus spores. Steve Stone had it a few years ago. Novoa has already lost about 15 pounds.

On the plus side, Dusty said that Wood and Miller continue to progress really quickly.

Well, on the plus side, he could have stood to lose some weight. Not like this, granted, but hey.

I was going to make the same comment :(

Novoa has already lost 15 pounds?

Do they bottle that stuff? I could use a little.

He'll more than likely gain it all back. Weight lost during an illness like his is probably from an extreme drop in water weight on top of not eating very much.

My cousin who lives in Fountain Hills just outside of Phoenix got this illness, too. It does knock you out, for sure, but the thing about it is that no one really knows how long you'll have it before it goes away. Novoa could be sidelined for several months which means that the option-less Todd Wellemeyer might have just secured himself a spot on the 25-man roster.

Is this something that would get better once he gets out of Arizona? I need to read the link provided, but don't have time right now. It sounds as if a lot of the people who have had it or know someone that had it were in Arizona.

Obviously the problem is where does he get work in if not in Arizona.

You could just kiss someone with Mono...it's more fun to get, and it has the same result.

I just thank Kenny Rogers that he did not contract Scarlet Fever:

I stood outside the Lucky Star

Staring at the flashing sign

It read: come on in and watch young

Scarlet's body come alive

Let her dance for you and catch your spell

You'll swear you can believe her

Be careful not to catch the scarlet fever.

So I paid my fare and walked down front

And found an empty chair

As I settled in young scarlet took the ribbons from her hair

The moves her body made while the music played

Were the likes I've never seen

And she became the envy of my dreams.

One by one her teasing movements

Brought the crowd out of their seats

And all at once young scarlet

Danced straight up in front of me

From the moment that her eyes found mine

I've never been the same

Scarlet locked another heart upon her chain.

Now I get scarlet fever every time I see her

But she's a night club teaser

Not paid to notice me

Yes, I get scarlet fever

If she knew how much I need her

She'd place her hand in my hand

And dance away with me.

She looked 25 but I was told

That she was just 16

She had a way of making a man believe

She danced for only him

As she tantalized I fantasized

And felt the sound of my heart beat

And every night I'd dream

She'd fall in love with me.

Then one night while driving in

My eyes begun to tear

'cos the sign outside the Lucky Star said: scarlet isn't here

she'd left that day to find a life

of bigger and better things

and she left behind my chain of broken dreams.

But still get scarlet fever

In my mind I still see her

Out there dancing somewhere

To another fool like me.

Yes, I get ....

I always thought Valley Fever was "like, gag me with a spoon" crazy talk.

I thought Steve Stone and Kerry Wood each suffered from something like this before.

i think stone almost died from it.

I don't think it went that far (at least I never read that), but that's why he stepped away from broadcasting for awhile.
