After throwing just one pitch in the second inning, starter A.J. Burnett was removed from the game against the Red Sox on Saturday.

The right-hander left the game and headed to the Blue Jays clubhouse, but the reason for his departure was unclear.

Burnett allowed two runs on three hits, including an RBI-double to Boston's J.T. Snow, in the first inning. With the outing against the Red Sox, Burnett has an ERA of 9.00 in three starts -- spanning eight innings

Poor investment, he's much too injury prone.

Yeah I never liked that transaction and thought they overpaid immensely for a guy that was like 49-50.

His W-L record isn't really the issue. At all.

That may be true, but what im getting at is if im investing that kind of money i want someone that is proven and clutch, not someone with potential.

BTW dont dismiss record completely it does factor in, it is the ultimate measure of success. I know it isnt something the pitcher has complete control over, but in the end it doesnt matter if you had 200 plus strikeouts and a great ERA, if you didnt win games you werent a success.

Also when you look at the numbers it is a strong indicator of success in wins, if you have the above stats then you most likely will have a good record, but it doesnt guarentee it. A W is all that matters at the end of the day.

I may very well be wrong, but thats just how I feel :D

W-L is not a primary stat in determining a pitcher's worth. That's pretty well documented. The problem is, voters still use it for things like the Cy Young, All-Star game, and even the Hall of Fame to some degree. It may not be the primary factor, but it is still looked at. So as long as people factor it in, it will continue to be mentioned.

W-L record is one stat. There are many.People need to quite being so defensive when people mention it.Its not the best stat ,but its one. ERA is another. We can debate all of them as for being the best ,but why?Making an argument against signing Burnett is not that difficult now.Only time will tell for sure though.

W-L is a team stat. Quality starts should be recorded as a pitchers stat before W-L. In my opinion, W-L should be removed from stats when judging & comparing pitchers. This stat punishes a pitcher when he doesn't get run support. Clemens LY was a good example of this. I believe he had a better year than Carpenter & the true pitching stats prove this.

The problem is the media makes this out to be the best determining factor of a pitcher. They are the ones at fault.

Thats their opinion. We never said they were right. Its an easy to understand stat for them to present to the average person.Players and owners use the stat in salary negotiations though. Both sides.

Thanks for defending yourself. I've never seen a bad pitcher win games consistantly. It's only one stat, but one that gets dismissed to often by stat boys.

Win totals on very good teams can get inflated though. It can make an average picture look great.

That's because bad pitchers that win games consistently have it catch up to them eventually.

For Example: Kirk Rueter. His highest win total in a single season was 15, that came in the same year he had his highest ERA in a single full season (not counting last year). He had a 7 year stretch in which he won at least 10 games. In only 3 of those 7 years did he put up an ERA under 4.

Go look @ Shawn Estes a few years back when he was with the Rockies. His W-L record was somewhere around 15-8, yet his ERA was close to 6.

The MRI was negative. They'll shut him down for about five days and see how he feels.

Definitely good news for the Jays! I still think that is a bunch of money to throw at a guy that has potential and big-time arm problems, but I do hope it works out for both.

A relieved Blue Jays general manager J.P. Ricciardi said Saturday night that a problem with scar tissue in pitcher A.J. Burnett's right elbow caused him to pull himself out of a game earlier in the day.

The team was told by doctors to rest Burnett for at least five days and then try to have him resume his normal throwing regimen.

Clemens sucks. He only had 13 wins last season. Mike Maroth had 14. He's better.

Right on, dude! And in 04, Randy Johnson was trash. Sean Estes was way better.
