The Tampa Bay Devil Rays optioned INF Wes Bankston, C Shawn Riggans, LHP Chris Seddon, RHP James Shields, RHP Brian Stokes, INF B.J. Upton and OF Delmon Young to Durham of the IL. They also reassigned C Ryan Christianson, INF Fernando Cortez, RHP Travis Driskill, OF Elijah Dukes, OF Darnell McDonald and INF Kevin Witt to their minor league camp.

Yeah, they're stupid. With Huff moving back to 3B, RF is open for Young. I'm guessing this means they want more of Travis Lee and Sean Burroughs in the linuep, who hold the key to them turning their franchise around!

I think they made the right decision - even w/ Huff moving to 3rd they still have Crawford, Gomes, Baldelli, and Gathright in the OF/DH. Spending another month or 2 in the minors will not hurt Young as a player and they will control him for another year.

Gathright is a 4th OF. They should go Crawford, Baldelli, Young, with Gomes at DH. And if the franchise didn't have a history like they have, I would agree with you. They are going nowhere, and it's mainly because the way they overvalue their young hitters. There's no way a team with that low payroll and going nowhere in the toughest division in baseball should still be paying Lugo and Huff. Especially, when they have what are possibly the 2 most talented prospects behind them (Huff has been in the OF the majority of the last couple years).

Can't say I blame them. They won't compete this year. Highlight the guys who have been around for a few years (like Baldelli), trade them for some pitching, then start the clock on them next year. The timing on some of these hot prospects and getting cheap years out of them while other core guys they need to keep who will be demanding more money soon is critical. For a team like them to finally break out, they need to keep the right balance of cheap productive players and well-paid stars intact. Delaying Youngs arby clock isn't a bad move.

Like I said, earlier, they did that last year. He's been ready to be one of the best 3-4 players on that team since July of last year. How long is too long?

I don't understand why they would do it now. there's two and half weeks of ST left. if they want to send him down, that's the DRays choice, but why not let him get ABs against major league and upper echelon minor league pitchers, and make him the last guy cut?

When he's about to be a minor league FA or is out of options is too long. He's ready, and he should be brought up, but if they can hold off is FA date one more year by waiting a month, then why not? As for why they are sending him down now instead of at the end of ST, that's a good question.

The interesting debate is whether the outfield should be Crawford, Upton, Young, with Gomes at DH. But BJ and Delmon should be in the majors, without question. For BJ, it isn't even a matter of his arbitration clock as that has already started. For him, it is nothing but defense holding him back.

Delmon Young has already become a malcontent in the DRays organization, and for the right reason. The DRays are a cheap-butt organization that is looking for money in the pocket, instead of the best possible team. It is of my opinion that EVEN right now, you could argue that Delmon Young is a better player the Huff. So, the DRays should go ahead and deal Young and Upton, cause I see NO REASON why either will want to re-sign with their franchise when FA hits.

Tampa Bay is the reason why MLB needs to contract a couple of teams. TB has no intentions of actually competing, thus they should be eliminated from major league baseball. Rant over.

Theoretically, you are correct. But in practice, that's just not true. You can hold a guy down for only so long before he will turn on your franchise. If I ran a low budget team, I'd try and accumulate as much young talent as possible. I would keep my best guys in the minors as long as possible, but that's really only about a few months to one season after it's become obvious he should come up. They've probably already crossed that threshold, and risk losing any sort of good will between them and the player. If you call a guy up early enough he might be willing to cut you some slack when trying to extend him through his arbitration years or possibly even free agency. When you go too long, he's not going to play ball as willingly.

if you were drafted by the devil rays early in the draft(like first round early), would you just sit out, not sign and reenter next year? i don't know why anyone would want to play there.

The bold is my entire point. You can't just simply justify keeping Delmon down because you want to delay his option clock. Especially, when he's likely to outproduce everyone they have on that ML team with the POSSIBLE exception of Huff and Gomes. That's when it crosses over to being cheap and not putting the best possible team on the field.

Isn't it really the arbitration clock they were thinking about delaying? The option clock doesn't really matter.

that's what I meant.

With both Upton and Young, Durham should be fun to watch. I'll have to try to make it to some of their games.

I'm going to try to make some too. I hope they are there when they come to Syracuse.

Speaking of Uptons...

Anyone notice that Justin Upton, who has yet to have a regular season, professional at bat is getting some time in D'Backs camp? All he's doing is hitting .500/.563/.857

Ummm.... wow.

Posted

.285/.303/.447

Young's numbers in 52 games at Triple-A last year.

4 walks, 33 strikeouts in 234 plate appearances. 7 stolen bases, 4 caught stealings.

.250/.323/.357 in 15 games this Spring.

2 walks, 4 strikeouts in 31 plate appearances. That said, 5 swiped bags out of 5.

But I can see why the Devil Rays are sending this 20 year old to Triple-A.

How terrible of them.

BJ Upton will make the team the moment they find a taker for Julio Lugo.

That though could be a while coming. There's no market for Lugo. The Rays might even have to wait for next winter when he hits free agency.
