*if you believe the Cubs (which in this surgery I do):

MESA, Ariz. -- Chicago Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood did his long toss drills on Friday, and may be ahead of schedule after undergoing knee surgery earlier this week.

"It's pretty amazing," Wood said Friday. "It feels pretty good today, and today's better than yesterday. I expect the same tomorrow."

Wood, who underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder in late August, had a 20-minute procedure on Tuesday to repair a torn medial meniscus. Wood has two small sutures on each side of his right knee, and that's it. He doesn't have to wear a brace.

"[My knee] is a little tight, I've got a little swelling, but other than that, it doesn't bother me to walk," Wood said. "They gave me a cane to walk out of there with, and I didn't use it."

The only day he hasn't done any shoulder exercises was Tuesday, when he had the knee operation. Wood doesn't consider this a setback.

"No, I don't really," he said. "Mark [O'Neal, Cubs athletic trainer] told me today he didn't expect me to be where I was at until six, seven, eight days after surgery, so it looks like we're heading in the right direction."

On his heavy shoulder-workout days, Wood does 1 1/2 hours of exercises. On his light days, he does a half hour.

"Everything still feels strong," Wood said.

Why can't the rest of his body heal and bounce back like it sounds how his knee is...

Because he knows how to walk fine mechanically. No matter how many times you get surgery or other medical help if you keep doing something wrong after it's going to be hurt again.

I'd be thrilled to see Kerry ready and pitching by mid-April or May and for him to stay healthy.

i don't see why he won't be able to be ready by the 3rd week of april. he sounds fine to me.

With all due respect, when I see Wood make a whole bunch of starts in a row, then I'll believe he's fine.

I hope so Sully. I just don't want him to rush and come back too early thus getting hurt and being out for the rest of the year. I'm also curious on how much of a workout he does in the off season because if he is out of shape it'll take longer IMO.

hendry seemed pretty excited about how he was throwing the ball earlier. i can't believe a knee scope will set him back to may. i think he'll make 30 starts this year.

I'd be thrilled if you are right. I think he'll make between 17-22 at the very most. Plus with the knee...did Wood come in over weight?

Not only has Wood recovered well, apparently Miller looks to be ready in early May as well.

Link.

Starters Wade Miller and Kerry Wood are in a race to return to the big leagues, and it looks nip-and-tuck.

Miller threw 10 pitches off the mound Thursday, his first time on the hill in spring training. He had right shoulder surgery after last season.

Wood played long toss Friday in the HoHoKam Stadium outfield with pitching coach Larry Rothschild. Wood, who had right shoulder surgery in August, underwent arthroscopic right knee surgery Tuesday in Los Angeles.

I still think if we can have a healthy Prior to start the season and a healthy Wood and Miller to complete the rotation in May that we will be a strong contender this season.

If those 3 guys are healthy along with a healthy Z and Maddux the Cubs will be in very good shape. I'm hoping Johnny B uses his pen enough to keep these guys healthy too.

If these guys are healthy, then the bullpen will also be strong. There would be no excuse to overwork the starters. However, it still too early to tell. I am glad that Hendry stockpiled some arms (Jerome Williams, Glendon Rusch) just in case.

We just can't tank in April, though.

I really hope Kerry comes back soon, and he doesn't make a single DL visit this year. I'd like to see him as a Cub for many more years. I fell in love with him after the 20k game and I don't think that'll ever go away.

I will always have a soft spot in my heart for him because of that, too. And the two games he pitched in the NLDS against Atlanta.

But I refuse to buy into the idea that he's healthy until I see him pitching well over a period of time. You know what they say: fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. With Woody, it's fool me the 8th time and I should be lobotomized.

I am much more hopeful of Jerome Williams getting the job done than Kerry Wood. The 20k game and the 03 playoffs were great but his career has not been all it could have been.Hes never won more than 14,hes had alot of injuries.Hes making around 12 mil in the last year of his contract. If he comes back and pitches well,do you give him 5years at 60 mil?If you do,that is a huge gamble.Kerry Wood and Wade Miller returning should be strictly looked at as a bonus. We have a 5man rotation and we need them to perform. We also have Hill and Guzman close.

Williams has a fraction of the skills that Wood does..

WHO CARES HOW MANY GAMES A STARTING PITCHER WINS. WINS ARE A TEAM STAT. They are the LAST metric that a pitcher should be judged by IMO. ahhhhhhhhhh.

I need a ice pick jammed in my eyes when I read "he's never won more than 14 games".

Williams may have a fraction of the skills but he probably figures more in the Cub future than Wood.Whether its pitching here or trade bait.

Since you can't deal with the fact that he has never won more than 14 games, how about the fact that since 1998 he has pitched more than 175 innings or had over 30 starts twice.

Thank you. I'm not arguing that he's been consistently healthy, I never have. Those stats that you provided in this post are much more indicative of judging him as a pitcher, than his win totals. I just can't stand the "wins" argument for determining the worth of a pitcher.

With all the money they spent on upgrading the bullpen, he'd BETTER use them.

It's not a matter of dealing with Wood's win totals, but that wins may be the most useless stat in evaluating a pitcher.

His health is a legitimate knock, but his win totals, particularly in '03, are far from a fault for him. All a pitcher can do is go out and shut a team down as best he can, it is up to his teammates to win the game. Saying certain pitchers "just know how to win" or "don't know how to win" is total BS.

The Cubs have paid the last 2 years $530,303.00 per start for this pitcher?

I'll wait for your answer.

Is anybody arguing that his injuries are not a huge concern? No.

The argument is that wins is the most worthless pitching stat, ever. If you want to knock him, use Starts. Not wins.
