"I do care about starting," he said. "But I started out [as a backup] last year and look at what happened. Let's see what happens.

"If they need someone ready to play, they don't know how [Cedeno] is going to be in the big leagues for a whole year.

"Ronny is a really good shortstop, but sometimes you need a veteran in the middle. So let's see what happens. I'm not mad. I'm excited to be here."

yeah, this is one of the team leaders? I remember Bowa doing this to Dunston. same kind of stuff, only with Bowa-esque venom. could've helped the team, offered advice and encouragement, and helped the kid along. instead, he did everything to block the inevitable in a desperate attempt to hang onto his job.

if I'm not mistaken, he agreed to be a back up when Hendry re-upped, didn't he? send him to Florida. pay his whole damn salary if you have to, and take a bucket of balls and used pair of Dontrelle's cleats in return if you have to. pay Pokey Reese's salary if he appeals and wins. anything. a whiney "veteran" is the last thing the Cubs need. this genie is officially out of the bottle, and Chicago sports media will not allow that cork to be put back in.

I can't believe Neifi had the guts to say some of that stuff. I don't mind Neifi, but there is no way he is anything more than a backup. Sometimes reality is tough to deal with.

Well, if you played in 154 games last season (the majority of those as a starter) and were consisently praised in the media for saving your team last season, you'd probably think of yourself as a starter too.

I don't really see the venom, but please remove Neifi from the team.

Do you think Neifi is a horrible backup middle infielder? I don't think he is.

Yes.

What do you expect from a backup middle infielder? His VORP was 6.6 (OK, not good) with ++ defense.

I don't expect a backup MIF'er to cost 2.5 million dollars a year.

Is that Nefei's fault? Would you have taken that contract if you were Nefei?

I'm not sure I agree that his defense is "++", some defensive metrics(PMR) rate him down the chain a little bit, certainly not enough to make up for his atrocious offense. Speaking of which, I expect a little more than one of the worst hitters of the generation on my team's roster. IF that type of production is inevitable, there's good reason to avoid Neifi He's been sucking for a long time, at least with someone who is younger(whether that be a prospect or another player of Neifi's caliber in his prime years) you have the potential of offensive improvement. Neifi's a known black hole, and at his age he could get worse. He's also overpaid, and is a crappy veteran with a manager who loves him for dumb reasons("he saved us", pitcher chats on the mound where pitchers probably want to punch him in the face, etc.) and will use him even beyond the role he shouldn't be in.

"If they need someone ready to play, they don't know how [Cedeno] is going to be in the big leagues for a whole year.

I never understood this. I've wondered this for a long time, and I need someone to clarify it for me. Why do most sports articles I've read have [] in them? What, did a player totally leave those words out, and the writer is inserting them back in? I mean, did Neifi actually say. . .

In this case, Neifi probably said "he" where [Cedeno] is. Since it's not a full quote, the reader doesn't necessarily know who Neifi is talking about.

1) Admittedly defensive metrics are still in their infancy however most I've seen rate Nefei as a very good SS.

2) Nefei's contract and manager isn't his problem - it's Hendry's.

Again, what do you expect from a backup middle infielder?

So is it well known that [] = "we are replacing another word" ?? If so thanks for the clarification! It just got on my nerves not knowing! I still think it should be. .

I told you. Someone who isn't an offensive abomination, and if we are forced to accept a defensive oriented guy who can't hit, at least get someone younger with the potential to give you something, anything at the offensive end. The rest that is out of his control was tacked on to the end to why he's particularly bad for this team.
