Just an Angels blog, but interesting...

If you think The Red Sox want the Moon for Manny Ramirez, you should hear the list of players the Marlins want in a trade for Miguel Cabrera - but they called twice after being told no, not to change their offer, just to underscore thir seriousness in wanting to trade MC. Word around the Cactus League is that the Cubs are going all out to land him.

Are you serious? Do you know any names, or details?

Great. Now I'm going to have one of those four-hour erections they warn you about on viagra commercials, even if this rumor is bogus.

And by the way, what kind of thing is that for the original writer to post?

"You should hear the list of players the Marlins want..." seems to indicate the writer HAS heard it...but he then refuses to tell us? Spill it, chuckles.

No details to speak of, I just found it interesting that an Angels fan with no vested interest would speculate about the Cubs as the front runner. Edited by indifferent

Well, if its true then the Cubs arent as lost as I thought. This would be HUGE. And I'm sure all the Fish want in return are minor leaguers. WOW.

Would be huge. But I will believe it when I see it.

Let it be known, I will personally drive a bus full of Cubs players to Florida and return Miggy to Chicago!

I'll go too. You may need some help. Florida and back is a long trip.

The interesting thing is, they probably don't want a Prior or Zambrano...too expensive. So we'd basically just have to overwhelm them with prospects to do it, and I think it's worth it.

Not that it will happen, but still.

If the Cubs could land Miggy, then Hendry would get an extension. And the good thing about that is.....he would deserve it.

I would go out on a limb and say that the Cubs would at the very LEAST make the playoffs. Barring any.....dare I say injuries.

Adding Cabrera in left would give the Cubs this line-up:

CF Pierre

2b Walker/Hairston

1b Lee

3b Ramirez

LF Cabrera

RF Jones

C Barrett

SS Cedeno/Perez

That line-up would be a top five line-up, no doubt. Pierre and Walker/Hairston would be good table setters. The middle of Lee/Ramirez/Cabrera would be as good a any in the game. Barrett brings some pop to the lower half of the line-up.

I would drool over that line-up.

I'm not an expert on the minors, but it seems from what I've read here, we don't really have the prospect package to compete with a lot of teams. Is that accurate?

The youngsters are showing a lot of promiss so far this spring. Except for Welly. IMO they are upping their trade value as each game goes by.

We have the talent to acquire Cabrera. Other teams would be able to trump us if they wanted. If we're the ones that are going all out and there's not much mention of other teams, it appears other teams aren't willing to do that.

Yeah, lots of teams would have the ability to beat a Cubs offer, but the question is if they would have the willingness. Cabrera would be a fantastic final piece to the Cubs roster. But some teams with better systems than the Cubs are not 1 player away from greatness. The Cubs could find a package taht would be very nice and very difficult for others teams to be willing to go over.

Hendry has a good relationship with Marlins from the Dlee and Pierre trades so maybe he has the inside track. To get a young (22) star that can play all four corner spots with a plus arm would be huge for Cubs future.

They also really know our farm. We're going to give up a lot. Cabrera would be worth it, but I can't imagine why the Marlins would trade Miggy until they were almost to the arbitration stage.

It really depends on how the prospects are valued. We all know the value of Pie. While he may not be in the upper echelon, he's still a prospect that has major league tools and many scouts project to be an all-star caliber CF.

After, Pie the other prospects have serious questions. How good is Dopirak? If Marshall and Guzman are healthy, they both have filthy stuff. Their value would depend on if other teams look past their health issues.

Hill also is intriguing to teams. His numbers last year were good in the minors, but he's getting old for prospect status.

If Guzman and Marshall and Ryu are all healthy, our system could see a resurgence. This is even more true if Dopirak returns to numbers more like his 2004 season.

I know I'm going to be in the minority here, but I'd be EXTREMELY leary about this trade. There's no QUESTIONING the caliber of player the Cubs would get in return, but I'm not sure the upgrade over Murton would constitute the trading chips the Cubs would have to give up. Not that I think Murton is or can be as good of a player as Cabrera, but I think he's capable of providing a 280-300/340-360/500 line. IMO, a line like that is NOT really our team's problem.

The problem is that the Cubs extremely hampered their flexibility when they signed Jones (mainly this guy) AND Pierre. Now adding a good outfield bat means we'd have to get rid of a promising, young, cheap, non-egocentric (the opposite of Cabrera, from what I hear, and I HATE guys like that) player just to create space. Now I know Cabrera's got a couple more years of relatively cheap service time, but eventually he's going to command a huge payday. Problem is we've got so many guys who are going to be commanding big pay days its not going to be possible to keep them all (given the way the Trib spends their money). Z, Prior, Lee, Ramirez, and possibly Cabrera would give us 5 superstar-type contracts to contend with. In my estimation, that's around 50 mil/year tied up in just five players. That's a very risky proposition for a team starved for talented youngsters (which only figures to get worse with the trade).

IMO, this team would be much better off trading for Miggy (assuming no age decline, which is very reliable) than for Cabrera. I think he'd come much cheaper, and would provide more replacment value than Cabrera would (both on the field and in the clubhouse). Then Ronny could slide over to second, and Neifi could be shipped off (won't happen but I can still dream). Now I'd be all for either of these two trades if I truly felt we were one player away, or had a much stronger productive farm system, but I don't. This is coming from a fan who thinks this team will be MUCH better than many think they're capable of, yet is enough of a realist to acknowledge their are a lot of ????????? with this team. It's hard to invest THAT much in a player when you don't even know what you've got, even if the early returns (spring training) are promising.
