In terms of the history of the game.

Is he the best shortstop to ever play? Will moving to 3rd affect his status?

Is he among the best of all time at any position?

No on both counts, in my opinion. Even if you still consider him a SS since his move to the Yankees he still hasn't quite reached the level of the Flying Dutchman. If he has another few years like his 2005, however, that could change. As you point out, however, should his accomplishments as a third baseman be used to judge his abilities compared to other shortstops? Similar arguments exist about Ernie Banks, whom history regards as a shortstop despite the fact that he spent most of his career at first base.

In order to catch Ruth for all-time supremacy A-Rod needs to maintain his numbers for many years to come.

I think A-Rod is definitely the best player of his generation, and time will tell if he ends up being one of the best of all-time. Because of the amount of money he makes I think it somewhat overshadows or takes away from what he has done on the field. Even looking at him as a third baseman, his numbers stack up favorably. I mean he did hit what? 47 HR's in Yankee Stadium, that is pretty darn good.

How good is ARod? I would trade any member of the Chicago Cubs for AROD without question!

I wouldn't trade Zambrano straight up.

The money would have to be right to make me give up Prior as well. I still think very (maybe too) highly of him.

That was pretty stupid of him. But he's still on pace to challenge Aaron. Best player in the game.

Yes indeed he is. I wish he were a little tougher mentally but he's the best out there IMO.

the knock on him for being a bad postseason player is completely unfounded if you look at the stats (if that is what you are referring to)

I actually believe ARod can be exploited at the plate with 2 strikes. He seems to have a hole low and away and with a high overpowering fastball. If I was a major league pitcher I would much rather pitch to ARod than many of the other great hitters (Bonds, Pujols, Manny). Which is remarkable, considering he's still a better player than all of those guys.

This picture shows all you need to know about A-Rod. I posted another name before, but that got deleted. So I guess I'll just have to call him A-Rod.

it was indeed a poor decision, but it's no reason to throw homophobic insults at them. This board frowns on that sort of thing

And pitch w/ a sub-4 era in the world series.

that's not really fair. If Ruth were playing today he wouldn't be doing both hitting and pitching. By that standard you could say that no one will ever be as good as Cy Young because they don't pitch complete games on 2 days rest

I don't understand how a picture of ARod running down the first base line tells us all we need to know about him. He could be running down the baseline spiking babies in their foreheads and that wouldn't change the fact that he's one of the best baseball players any of us will ever see.

Actually, for the most part Ruth was either pitching exclusively or playing in the outfield exclusively; the only seasons where he did a fair bit of both were 1918 and 1919. By the time he was traded to the Yankees at the age of 25 he was pretty much a full-time as a positional player and not pitching at all. In his four major-league seasons he never once took the field anywhere but the mound.

Regardless, when Ruth was pitching he was one of the greatest hurlers in the game and when he was at the plate he had no peer.

Thats what i was going for. If I'm not mistaken he still holds some records for pitching in the w.s.

He was a great pitcher, and probably the best hitter ever. Combined, that makes him leaps and bounds above what arod could ever be, unless he hits 800 HRs and 3807504720672507 rbi's

Being that this is a public message board, it prevents me from voicing my true feelings about A-Rod. A-Rod is a whiner and a tool. I hate the Yankees, but I will admit that Derek Jeter is a far better shortstop than A-Rod. For you stats people, don't go and post all the statlines comparing the two because everybody knows about that. Jeter goes out everyday and works his butt off. He has never been accused of dogging it at all. And can you name another hitter that has come through more for his team in clutch situations? Only David Ortiz comes to mind in recent years. Jeter just goes out and plays and he plays hard. A-Rod gets his HR's and RBI's in blowout games against the Devil Rays. Jeter hits clutch HR's in the World Series against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Need I say more.

There's no way that Jeter is better that Rodriguez. Just because you don't like a player doesn't devalue his ability.

Agreed. As much as I despise A-Rod like the plague, he's by far a better player than Jeter, even in the playoffs.
