Okay, someone refresh my memory here...If the Cardinals played their last home game at Busch in October 2005 and the new stadium won't be ready until 2007, then where are they supposed to play in 2006? I'm obviously missing something here...

The new stadium will be ready this year.

Thanks, Paul Sullivan just said that it was going to be ready in 2007 on Murph's show. I was under the impression that it would be ready this year until I heard him say it.

That's what you get for listening to Paul Sullivan in the first place

I dont think it is going to be completely done until 2007. They are still going to be working on it during this baseball season. I dont think you will be able to sit in the lf bleachers until late summer

I am unsure of all the exact details but IIRC the stadium will be short about 6,000 seats when it opens and the rest of the seats should be completed approx mid-season. All of the "short seating" is in the LF area (closest to where Busch II stood) I assume that includes at least some bleacher seating.

Anyone curious about the progress can access the stadium cam here

I'm under the impression that the LF bleachers will be ready by opening day. It would be the LF patio and the seating above that, that wouldn't be completly finished till about the all star break.

What a beautiful stadium! I've always hated the Cardinals, but respected them. (For example, I just hate the White Sox, Mets, etc.)

I hope the city of St. Louis is grateful for this stadium, just look to markets like Florida for an example of how bad things could be.

And as a Cubs fan, I don't even have to mention how glad I am for Busch to be gone.

Murph re-played an interview with MacPhail from 2001 and he's the one who mentioned 2007 as the date the new Cards stadium was to be ready.

The latest on the Cards park is that an insurance company in St. Louis says the site is part of a toxic waste dump, which has EPA ramifications. The company says the team knew of the problem and hid it from the insurance company. Considering that area in St. Louis was home to many fur tanning companies for decades, who knows what they could find.

The management isn't grateful, as they won't raise their payroll despite the new stadium. Nice.

I think it will be a hitters park June-August and a pitchers park April, May and September/Oct.

The wind and warm weather are going to play some interesting tricks on that park. It does look like it's going to be an amazing place.

I think that's a competitive disadvantage - I would prefer a park that consistently plays either for hitters or pitchers so you can mold a team to that park. This is of course from a Cubs fan whose team plays in one of the worst stadiums in terms of variability.

The biggest problem the fans have is not that the payroll isn't going up much if at all, but the fact that Cardinals management used increased payrol to stay competitive as a reason to build the new stadium. Now their crying in their beers about the expense of the stadium and the revenue it brings in having to be used to pay for it. As good as the organization has been, this was kind of a backhanded move on their part. Too bad most of the fans down here are so blinded by their love for the team that they won't have a problem with what's going on.

I agree. But It's a double edged sword. If you have a bandbox then you can't get decent pitchers (Coors) or a pitchers haven, you have trouble getting hitters (Detroit till they moved the fences).

This year will be interesting. I don't believe anyone will really know how far off neutral the new park is for a while. And you're right, Wrigley can play really small or really big depending on what the lake is doing.

Payroll didn't go up much because it was a terrible free agent year. I'm in the group of fans that were glad they didn't spend 70 million on Burnett.

If in the next couple years they refuse to sign any higher end free agents I'll start to cry foul. Till then, I'm glad they're not spending money on bad contracts.

I thought someone had done a study showing that pitchers parks were generally favorable to building winning teams versus hitters parks. In a bandbox, I am wondering if the Astros have developed the right formula with a pitching dominated team. On the other hand, they were doing just fine in the Astrodome too (showing that having good players is more important than what kind of park you have). Just so long as I never have to watch the mid-80s Cardinals ever again!

Actually what the owners said was that a new stadium is the reason that the team was able to raise the payroll the past few years. Nothing was actually said that payroll would increase when the stadium got here. If there was no new stadium, there would be no triple threat of Pujols, Rolen and Edmonds most likely this year.

As for the diminsions, although the power alleys are listed officially at 372, part of the power alley area actually will go to about 390 around the corners of the bullpens.

I'm trying to think of another team other than the Cubs that has more fans "blinded by their love for the team".

Wow....pot meet kettle.

I was in St. Louis this last weekend.

The new Busch looks nice but they're going to have to haul (donkey) to get the place done in time. According to people down there they've been told all along that the left field seating will not be done for opening day. They're hoping for mid-summer to be 100% done.

However the other areas still look like they need a lot of work. No grass on the field, lots of finishing work etc.
