The major papers haven't reported the Cubs interest in Gonzo so it wouldn't suprize me if there's interest in Hidalgo that has flown under the radar as well.

The best RH'ed bat off the bench with be Hairston or possibly Grissom, depending on what happens at 2B.

I'm not thrilled w/Mabry being the best LH'ed option off the bench either.

240 hitters with little power don't excite you?

Hidalgo just got released by the Orioles. It's still early in camp he must has looked really lost at the plate or showed up in terrible shape.

Wow...that's interesting. You're right. He either never showed up or was in horrible conditioning when he did.

Jeeze...imagine giving a guy that shows up trying to make the team out of shape like that a guaranteed contract? I hope he saved his money the Astros overpayed him with.

Ah...

Here's the story.

Hidalgo signed a minor league contract on Feb. 26, reported two days later and spent four days in uniform before leaving the team Saturday to be with his ailing wife. He never returned, and the Orioles released the frustrated outfielder Tuesday to allow him to pursue an opportunity in Japan.

The article goes on to indicate Hidalgo wasn't happy with being a bench player and wants to be a starter in Japan. If this is the case, I guess he wouldn't have made a good bench option.

That's funny. Like he's shown he deserves to start.

I'd imagine his line of thinking is, he can play in Japan and if he plays well there might be an opening on a MLB team due to an injury or something.

You're probably right.

I didn't take that as he thinks he deserves to start. He was frustrated that he couldn't start, then went to be with his wife. The wording makes it sound like since he knew he wasn't going to get a starting job in Baltimore he wanted to try in Japan.

Hildago, has done nothing but backtrack the past two years. Coupled with a desire to start , I never felt he was a viable option. Guys like Sing intrigue me. but i dont know if he would be better served getting full time triple A playing time. I wonder how much Hildalgo has left. Coach L

I doubt it. He's 25. He has well over 2000 professional plate appearances, over 600 at the AA level. The guy is probably never going to be an everyday player. in the majors. I think his value in the future would be as a platoon player at best. And I don't think it would hurt him at all to be on the big league bench this year. I worry about inexperienced young guys with little pro time, but not 25 year olds who have been pros for 7 years.
