So it looks like the moves have been made and the hospitals cleared of all there injured pitchers. Is it time for us to get behind neifi and Jock (i mean Jaque!) and the rest of this car crash of a team or should we stick to our guns and follow with extreme caution?. My main fear is that the boo birds will be out before April is over, we dont have a good team so maybe its time to suck it up and get behind the guys? think i might just settle for minor leagueball this year!!!

We actually do have a pretty good team that is going to rely heavily on pitching. If the pitching fails, this team goes down with it.

The offense sucks, still. We did very little to improve it. Pierre is decent, but eh.

I'm behind this team anyways, and I don't know a Cub fan who isn't. I'm not rooting for Jones to fail, if that's what you mean.

I thought we would live or die by our pitching when the lineup started

Loften

Grudz/T walk

Sammy

Alou

Ramirez

D Lee

Now i have no clue how bad this could get, i really want them to win but in my head JH's Lightning in a bottle stuff could sent us under.

Why? Our pitching is MUCH Better, and. .

Pierre is Loften (maybe better) of 03

Walk is Walk

DLee is Sammy of 03

Ramirez is Alou of 03

Murton is Ramirez of 03

and Barret is Dlee of 03

Our offense isn't really much "worse" as a pesimist might put it, DLee and Ramirez of 03 were not yet the DLee and Ramirez they are today. And we have a couple youngesters which are going to do very good this year, as well aside from Prior and Wood having carreer years, we really didn't have much else in the pitching. Look, you can be a bitter Cubs fan if you want to. But don't bring it my way!!

Wohooo!! Go CUBS!!

I've never booed a Cub. I don't like several of our players as players, but booing goes beyond commenting on performance. If the guy just beat up a hospital room of cancer patients and went 0 for 5 with 4 Ks...well, then maybe.

Get behind this team? Of course. *

* Dusty and Hendry aren't part of the "team" IMO, they're saboteurs.

I'm hoping for the Wrigley La Lake Effect which will make the wind blow in during the top half and out during the bottom, and the La Labrum, El Elbow and Fountain of Youth Effects to help the SP. Then if we get lucky and Dusty starts channeling Casey Stengel or Miller Huggins....we're in! :)

Every year I tell my wife I am done with them, and 5 min later I am back in front of the TV or Internet listening to Ron and Pat.

Yes I support them, it just that I dont support management, because well... they dont really manage to manage.

Yea, I was gonna say... FWIW, this team is better on paper than the 03 team... We'll just have to see how it plays out.. I wish we would've kept Nomar at SS if we were gonna sign such a crappy RF...

But maybe if we sub him out against lefties, Jacque will work out...

We will definitely live/die by the pitching...

The 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7 and 8 spots in the lineup look good. The Cubs are really hurting @ 5 though. The Cubs are one move away from being serious contenders.

I'll talk a lot of crap all year long about how the Cubs suck (and they will in my book until they win it all), but I've always been one of the loudest to cheer. I'd get behind this team even if it included Jacque Jones and Juan Encarnacion. Crap, I just threw up in my mouth a little...

one move and a healthy pitching staff.

And a compitent manager that knows how to fill out a line-up card.

To throw a little more optimism in the pot. i thought that the moves that the White Sox made last year were poor. Look what happened to them.

I think we get upset over our off-season moves but this team will be better than last years team and IF the pitching stays healthy can be a real contender. We are improved at LF,CF and SS. Will probably get more from ARam this year. I dont think we are worse at any starting position than last year and also still not great but have a better bench.

The one thing that bothers me the most is that we keep throwing a ton of money at the bullpen when the biggest problem out there is that we have a manager who is probably the worst handler of a bullpen in baseball history. I am happy to add eyre and howry but if Dusty missuses them to what avail is it.

So I say Go Cubs let the season start and hope the Cards fall on their butts

i cheered for teams with the likes of gary scott, willie banks and scott bullet on them. i will cheer for this one like i do with every cubs team i've watched since my birth. (and hopefully make it back to chicago to see a game or four).

9th in runs scored in the 16 team NL. That's bad. Below average is bad.

4th in OPS doesn't come close to telling the whole story. The OBP side of OPS should weigh more heavily than the SLG side. The Cubs are good with the SLG, but absolutely terrible with the OBP. This offense is not among the worst of the worst, but it's far from good at the same time. It's an enormous problem.

That's one (entirely pessimistic) way of looking at it. Take away the time that Aramis Ramirez missed, and the team would be above average in runs scored. Maybe even top 5.

Pessimistic? It's the god's honest truth. Just the facts, no spin. It's tough to score runs when you don't get on base very often, and the Cubs don't get on base often enough. You're the one throwing around ifs. Yeah, if everything works out perfectly the Cubs would win every game. I live in the real world where the Cubs have had a real run scoring problem for several years that is tied to an OBP problem, which is entirely based on their inability to draw walks.

But no, let's all pretend that's just pessimism and not the truth.
