Just a thought, but wouldn't the owners of the 28 other teams have to approve of this sale first? So forget about Cuban...I think they are aware of his antics in Dallas and want no part of an owner like him.

Be careful of what you wish for... :?

I really believe in this possibility, that's why I started the thread. While Mark Cuban is intriguing, remember the Steve Stone group that wanted to move the Expos to Vegas? The head of the syndicate was Lou Weisbach who used to run Halo Industries. He's a local guy. Remember all those Major League dugouts had "Halo" written all over them. The cupholders at Wrigley used to say "Halo" too. They were a specialty advertising firm. Anyway he has financing to buy a sports team. And if it's a baseball team, Steve Stone would be the GM. So in this case we would get the change in management.

If you want to guarantee a further delay in winning a title, putting Stone in charge of a baseball team would be one way to do it.

He was a great color commentator. He's not a good judge of talent. Look at his absolutely stupid Ramirez trade idea last summer. He'd make an awful GM.

And I'll echo the sentiments of others in this thread: the Chicago Cubs don't consistently win because of poor baseball decisions. They have more than ample payroll. It's the people handing out the contracts and allocating assets who are to blame.

Yeah, I hope Cuban wouldn't bring his antics involving taking a perennial doormat and turning them into a perennial power.

i for one could do with out him jumping up and down behind the dugout yelling at the umps or worse, at the players, making stupid comments in the press and generally embarassing the rest of us fans...as much as i would like to see a winner on the northside, i wouldnt trade my dignity and class to make it happen.

The issues lie not with the money, but with the lack of any real plan or anybody with a pair of balls in management positions. What needs to be done is have the entire front office cleared out and new people brought in with actual ideas and plans, not this non-sense of copying whatever worked last year that we have now. The Tribune won't do this because of how much money it would cost to terminate certain contracts and go thru the hiring process. Instead, the instituional thought process will be kept because we are promoting from with in. A new owner would inspire change.

I happen to believe a lot of it is about money. Sure, the Cubs have been mismanaged over the years. And teams do win with low payrolls. But its a lot easier to win when you spend more money than everyone else. How many times have we gambled on an aging vet well past his prime when there have been top FA's available? I've been hoping for the Cubs to be sold for years, but never thought it might happen.

With the fan base the Cubs have, they should have a little more of a Yankee mentality. I don't believe for a second that the Cubs have made $4 million or whatever in any given year. Never mind the ticket scalping organization, but there is no way anyone can tell me that the media contracts are paying the Cubs fair value. What does the Trib care? They own both. In fact, its in their interest to screw the Cubs in favor of the media outlets. That way, they can just point to the $4 million they made and say they spent all they could on the team.

The Yankees START a cable network which is projected to be an absolute cash cow, and the Cubs are owned by one. This stinks to me, and always will. The fact is that the Trib is a publicly traded company that has to answer to shareholders.

I would love nothing more than the team to be sold to someone who isn't running the team to make money, but because he is loaded and wants a team. Maybe the Trib will succumb to pressure, but something tells me it might be wishful thinking.

Don't pretend any new buyer wouldn't be interested in a profit.

How can their failures be about money when they spend a lot more than most? They don't spend as much as the biggest spenders, but they spend as much, or more, than most of the consistently good teams. Look no further than Houston and STL, who each spend less than the Cubs and each outproduce. It can't be about money. At least, it's mostly not about the money. It's obviously a management problem, otherwise the Cubs wouldn't be consistently trailing Anaheim, Oakland, Houston, St. Louis, Minnesota and others.

Cuban has curbed his behavior recently and in my mind is justified in calling out the officiating in the NBA on occasion. When has he yelled at players?

I'll take a guy who would "embarrass" the fan by turning them into a contender. Frankly, I'm more embarrsed by the current lineup than anything Cuban could do.

bad calls are part of the game, be it the NBA or MLB, an owner has no business calling out an official during a game and throwing temper tantrums on the sidelines, i dont care how bad a call is, coaches and managers are hired to handle these situations. i havent watched any mavs game this year, so i cant speak to cuban dialing it down, but i wouldnt want to see an owner of the cubs pull the crap ive seen him pull(living in texas for 5 years i got to see all his antics on the SW sports report...he was regularly featured for one dumb thing or another)

I guess you care more about that stuff than I do. I'm more interested in the bottom line. The bottom line is Cuban's teams win because he works hard to make them win. That's enough for me.

They haven't found equivalent stats in basketball to baseball yet like sabermetrics, so that's why the Mavs haven't won a NBA title yet (even though they've been consistantly in the top 3-4 of their conference since Cuban took over as owner). Dallas has the 3rd best record in the NBA at this point. A big part of that is their draft picks the last 3 years, at the bottom of the draft have been so good. Also, there is a salary cap in the NBA so it's not like he's dumping unlimited money into the team (he does pamper the players as far as having really luxirious locker rooms, etc).

An owner like Cuban wouldn't spend necessarily more money on the Cubs, but he'd spend it much more wisely.

How?

Cuban took the Devil Rays and turned them into the Red Sox in about a year. The Steve Nash decision looks bad now, but when his contract ends lets see how bad it is for Phoenix. We could do much, much worse than having Mark Cuban own the Cubs.

oh boy they made the play offs 4 years straight...not a big deal in a sport where half the teams make the playoffs, all cuban has managed to do is turn a perrenial loser into a "might go somewhere"...you can say the same thing about MacPhail/Hendry and the cubs...at least i dont have to watch the owner of the cubs screaming at the umps from the stands and generally making an arse of himself

I have a couple hundred million sitting around so i'm in as a buyer if the Cubs go up for sale. My first act as owner would be to fire MacPhail, Hendry and Dusty and replace them with NSBB members.

You must remember, in basketball you have a salary cap. Kinda ties your hands. He could spend whatever he wants to in baseball to get the players he wants.

we can go back and forth on this all day long, you're not gonna change my mind...i think mark cuban is a bufoon and would rue the day that he became the owner of the cubs

You obviously just hate Mark Cuban, for whatever reason. Why hold him to such an unreasonable standard? You are saying he's a bad owner because he hasn't won a world championship in the 6 years he has owned the team? Forget that he has turned them completely around he hasn't won a championship in 6 years! The Mavs are the 2nd or 3rd best team in the NBA this year and have beaten all the big contenders.

its not so much that i hate cuban. i lived in texas for the last 5 years and saw him come out of the stands to yell at refs, scream at his own players as well as opposing players from his courtside seats, and make asinine comments to the press on a relatively regular basis(thanks to the SW sports report)i have no desire to see this behavior associated with cubs ownership. this was all i said, you then said winning is all you care about, i just reminded you that the mavs have won nothing, not even a division title, under cubans ownership. crucify me

I sat courtside at game one of the 03 West Conf. playoffs in San Antonio.. about 25 feet away from Cuban. Lemme tell ya, the Dallas fans LOVE him!! And he loves his team's fans. He's "one of the guys" when it comes to being at the games. Is he colorful? Yes. Annoying? To the opposing team's fans, Yes. But, truth be told.. he has passion for his team and it was quite evident that night I saw him because he wasn't very happy that the Mavs lost!

Would I want him as the owner of the Cubs? Very much so! It's about time someone in the upper echelon of this organization cares about their team the way he does.
